@Grafietstift Thank you very much for posting this. One of the best videos in Youtube. Where did you get the pictures? Most of them are very uncommon.
@fontanalu Thanks for the compliment, you're very welcome! The pictures... I've been "collecting" these pictures all over the internet for years now... There are some good pictures on this site - wait I can't add an url here. Google "White Fang The Who" and then click on the first search result (the who dot info) and go to "misc pictures".
@trevgk Learn your facts. They were the Detours when Moon joined then they shortly became The Who but Pete Meadon Thought The High Numbers was a more mod sounding name.... after awhile they were the Who again. You should watch The High Numbers at the railway hotel.
@itsglen9646 No, no, my friend, it's an old floor filling Motown classic! Lemme loves 60s rock and roll and soul as near as I can tell (he's mentioned Little Richard being a favorite)
i thought it was shit. horrible to think they were just connected to pop music recording rip off. no talent just connections..of course pete forced them out of the fraud.
GOING TO SCHOOL IN ACTON ,WEST LONDON , I USE TO PASS JOHNS HOUSE IN LEXDEN ROAD , WHERE THEIR VAN WAS PARKED OUTSIDE , ( JOHN DID NT DRIVE ) , BUT ROGER DID AND THEY WHERE ALWAYS SO FRIENDLY , IF YOU SAW THEM THERE AS THEY HAD ATTENDED THE LOCAL SCHOOL TOO , ACTON COUNTY , WITH PETE . TRUE LEGENDS AND GREAT GUYS .
@13umperCar It was not written by the Who but they may have put their stamp on it. Eddied Holland I believe sang the original and Eddie Vedder did a great cover.
I'm really struggling with how TwoEarsWet further down the page thought this drumming was anyone but Keith Moon. How strange...
The Who only ever sounded like this after Keith parked his arse on the drumstool. After that, the rest is glorious history. More than 40 years of it, in fact. Though after Keith died...well it was never quite the same. Keith's big heart gave The Who such warmth. Miss him.
This is my favourite version as well! I have it off the album(!) 'Who's Missing'. Definitely Moon on drums-doing his "surf beat" & yes Daltrey used to straighten his hair w/ Dippidy Doo according to The Who book 'Maximum R & B'
This is DEFINITELY Moon on drums. Listen to the powerful bass drum and the sped up beat, it's his signature. When Sandom was sacked he was the weak point, simply playing the backbeat and never driving the song like Keith does here.
Great video, but this isn't really the High Numbers. This is the same version recorded by Shel Talmy in 1965 that appears on the My Generation Deluxe Edition and Who's Missing. It's labeled as the High Numbers on the Box Set, but that is a factual error. The High Numbers did record this song at their first session, but that is not the version on the Box. Hope this info helps!
I meant that this version was recorded by Shel Talmy in 1965 during the My Generation LP sessions. They were officially the Who by that point.
The band did record "Leaving Here" in the High Numbers days, but that version has never been booted. The '65 version was mis-identified on the 30 Years Box Set as being by the High Numbers... Hope this helps!
naw, you said doug sandom was immediatly replaced by keith moon, he was actually replaced by a number of session drummers, until moonie out shined one and became the perminent drummer(the first song he played with the who was road runner)
My God, how magnificently pissed off does Roger look in EVERY photo taken of him between 1963 and 1966! Rock n roll is all about attitude, and Rog had THE baddest.
not as good as the birds version but still one of my favorite who songs i mean the drums is sick

Back in the days when you could dance to musicians in clubs, not DJs and crappy pop off of someone's iPod.
Someone shove me in a DeLorean and take me back. I belong in that club. With a pint of Guinness and a girl on my arm.

I'm sure most of you will strongly disagree, and probably flame me for it, but the MOTORHEAD version of this song is ten times better.

Maybe if Pete had used some fuzztone...

Great vid and shaking version of "Leaving Here". Only stuff I've heard credited to The High Numbers are the two sides of the "I'm The Face" single.
Thanks for posting this.
That's Keith Moon on drums and no mistake.

@trevgk Keith Moon was in The High Numbers actually, but not in The Detours.
I just showed early pictures of them in this, indeed mostly '64/'65. Some of them as The High Numbers.
