Ahhhh I've been trying to make out what they say after "learn S&M, and all those gay tricks" does anyone know? I saw them live last night and still couldn't make it out... =[
No matter how funny people think the lyrics, I always think that Stephin Merritt such a 'poignant' and sad songwriter. There is inestimable sorrow in his words. there is an air of tragicomedy. A poor sad nun wishing she could have attention. Its funny, buts its also very moving.

Damn...I love the MF's.
But their live shows just suck. One of the major factors that made the album "Distortion" unique was cause of it's use of DISTORTED instruments! Hey, if they don't like that, at least put some DRUMS on, cause even the earlier songs lose their sense of rhythm and drive without the drums...
Well first of all I love the magnetic field's live sets, if you want to hear a remake of distortion on stage go buy the album. But the main reason they tone it down is because Senor Merrit has a condition which makes him very averse to loud noises.
This is such a funny song! Interesting to hear it perfomed by Stephin himself, as opposed to Shirley on the record. I'm going to see Magnetic Fields in Gothenburg in June!
The more I've listened to this has made me like it more. It's a good song! I still wish whichever of the girls sung it on the cd would have sung here, but I guess I'll have to wish for someday.
Funny, I always thought it was about how women can degrade themselves....

I hate the audience reactions. It's not a comedy gig!!!

But this song IS comedy. Sorry...

Yeah. Pay attention to the lyrics. How can you NOT laugh at them and at the brilliant delivery?
RedRibbon17 3 years ago 5
I did laugh at them; once, when I first heard the record. Live, I'd sooner bathe in the majesty of the song, than chortle at the wry-ming couplets.

i actually think stephen merritt's version is exponentially better. his voice is perfect, and it's suppose to be a funny song.

I wish the girl...Claudia would've sung this. I'd rather here a good performance than Steven singing just to make it sound funny. Thumbs down!

Regardless of how some people in the audience reacted, watch Stephen's expression throughout.
