@chorixo i'm american but above that i'm a FREE MAN, and i cried several times during this, they are true heroes of spain and america, and a personal inspiration to me. Viva la Quince Brigada! Viva España libre!
This video suck. This war was fought by the two greatest plauge of mankind and the video glorify one of them and hates on the other while in reality they are almost the same.
I've read two books about the war. They present a much more complicated view than this "pure anti-Fascist" presentation.
For example, the supporters of the Republic had a habit of burning churches and killing priests and nuns. For some reason, that fact didn't come out in the video. Nor did the word "Communist" occur in the film. But an American from Seattle was called the "Political officer" read Commisar. Also unmentioned: Franco was a good ally to the U. S.
Right, ctbarfield, and so was Saddam Hussein when we cared more about screwing Iran than supporting civil and just democracies. Franco illegally overthrew an elected government - do you support democracy? I have to ask, because I assume you wouldn't support a similar fascist takeover of the U.S.
And it's safe to say that any country that's participated in a war has committed atrocities - be it the U.S., Britain, Spain, Germany, etc. etc. The U.S. is no more guilty than any other country.
Do I support democracy? Yes--the same way the American Founding Fathers did. Their COLLEGE OF ELECTORS protects us against democracy running wild. If the people vote-in some wild radical, the Electors pick another President--that's their job. More recently, the Federal Gov. cancelled the democratic segregation laws of Southern states. Then the U.S. MADE the Iraqis include civil rights in their new constitution, because democracy
would have created an Islamic Fundamentalist state regime.
Franco was never a "friend of America." During the civil war, he requested aid from the Nazis who would go on to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans a few short years later. During WW II he remained neutral, refusing to help America or any of the Allies in their fight against Hitler. Even after the war, when Franco found common cause with America against Stalin (who, like Franco himself, was a dictator), Franco's alliance with the US was based on coinciding interests, not any shared values.
How could a dictator like Franco, who overthrew a democratic government, be a genuine ally of the US, with its deeply rooted historical commitment to democracy, and its conception of itself as a guardian of democracy everywhere? Franco's Spain had nothing in common with the democratic US, in which, unlike under fascism, freedom of religion and freedom of speech are protected *by law*.
It is true that the Communists gave their full support for the Republicans. During World War II a few short years later, the Soviet Union gave its full support to none other than the American and British democracies- not because Americans were all communists, but because they shared a common enemy who posed a common threat, not merely to any one political group, but to humanity as a whole. During the Spanish civil war, as during WW2, the communists were the lesser of two evils
I guess by your post you are quite young. Let me tell you:
"Soviet Union gave its full support to none other than the American and British democracies"
Not true at all, Stalin signed a pact with Hitler in 1939, search for Nazi Sovietic pact in google. Both countries destroyed Poland and split the country for them. Later Hitler will attack the Soviet Union.
I know full well that Stalin and his henchmen had no personal interest in fighting Hitler, but once the Nazis invaded Russia they realized they had no choice, if only to preserve their own completely undeserved power from their equally murderous fellow dictator(s.)
Morally there is practically no distinction between fascism and communism; practically in the context of ww2 however, there was a temporary but significant difference. i wasn't defending communism in any way. but "even a broken clock is right twice a day"
yes i know about the red terror in spain it was mostly carried out by stalinists against democratic socialists, anarchists and trotskyists...george orwell devotes several brilliant passages to it in "homage to catalonia" :D
i think you misunderstood my comment, i wasn't defending the soviets
Well, let's hope not. The conditions here are not as bad as they were in Spain before the civil war. And say what you will about Franco, he unified the country and raised the standard of living for every class of citizen.
May be comparison of the 3rd Reich to the USA seems very original and clever to you. To me it does not. To me it rather looks like a cheap mind trick. Probably you have no more than a vague idea what Nazy Germany was.
"Probably you have no more than a vague idea what Nazy Germany was"

Direct from Spain: Adolf Hitler, son of the Catholic Church, has died defending Christianity. His tomb, the funeral pyre of Berlin, can carry a Spanish epitaph: He who is buried here did not die.
cont From death he departed into life. If Adolf Hitler had been allowed to choose his death, this is the death he would have chosen, that he might turn death into life. Together with the palm of martyrdom, God bestows upon Hitler the laurel of victory. Hitler died that Europe might be free. Who can forget that the SPANISH conquistadors murdered 60 million indigenous peoples in the 'new world'. Only ISLAM murdered more people (in India). I am glad you think so, and I am glad you think you did them a favour, but please, don't do any more favours for anyone. The only reason you dropped the bombs was you could and needed to try them out, PERIOD!
The reason America dropped the bombs was not to do a favor to Japanese but a need to stop the war. And not the USA started that war, but Japan - bloody and cruel and dangerous enemy. So
Americans did the right thing, saved many human lives, and Japanese lives among them.
the video depicts the British "neutrality," which favored the fascists as some sinister plot with no real purpose. it was actually strategically planned as a way to contain the spread of Bolshevism which they saw as the greatest threat to their empire. See Douglas Little, "malevolent neutrality."
Yes, but had Britain and France supported the Spanish Republic, then it would have not been forced to rely so much on the USSR. "Bolshevism" spread so much in Spain only because no governments (besides half-hearted support from Mexico) would assist the legitimate Spanish Republic. A self-fulfilling prophecy.
true. the real reason is to protect British business interests (mainly the mines) which were threatened by the socialist reforms and collectivizations under the Second Republic. The Nationalists on the other hand promised the return of "order," (and profits for the businesses). So it wasnt the Soviets they were worried about but Spanish revolutionaries and labor unions.
forcing the Republic into Soviet embrace actually helped to ensure their defeat, since the soviets were undoing the revolution (see Bolloten, Broue and Temime) and ripping off the Repub with poor arms deals (see Howson, "Arms for Spain").
so youre right. forget what i said five months ago
