My, how shallow Roxane is. True, Chrsitian cannot speak like Cyrano, whose words would move stone to weep, but his love to her is still sincere. And yet she rejects him, nay, scorns him, when he cannot entertain her with pretty words. The message, the intention of the words, that shows his true character. The medium through which he expresses it should be the icing, not the whole cake.
@EnchantedMagickLove totally agree. he's being genuine in his feelings and is straightforward, whereas she rejects these feelings for not sounding pretty enough
This is fascinating ! Cyrano, the great eloquent artist of wordplay... rich in words although he didn't own a penny. So, this was presented on television, was it?
Why must women today chase brutes and cads, and leaving those who would make them princesses and queens forlorn in the dust? For the whole of womankind, it seems these days, would trade gold for dross and silver for tin, and would exchange their dignity to compete for a date with Brett Michaels, for some strange reason.
@Musicisliberation no not at all. I just thikn she was a silly starry eyed slip of a girl who was very overrated by Cyrano... but somehow that makes it more touching in a way.... Cyrano wasting all his talent clinging to irrational aspirations about a girl that was little more than a pretty face. She matured later but somehow she never seemed remotely 'equal' to him (not to be mean.)
Some of this is changed from the original Brian Hooker translation -- a few lovely bits are lost: "My heart is opened wide and waits for them, too large a mark to miss. Moreover, yours fall to me swiftly, mine more slowly rise." "Yet not so slowly as they did at first..." "They have learned the way, and you have welcomed them." "Am I so far above you now?" "So far? If you let fall upon me one hard word out of that height, you'll crush me!"
It is more that a modern woman does not see romance in this form anymore. Which is sad that I am a lot like Cyrano. I have practiced fighting and writing as my two talents.
... they have become our taxi drivers, our soldiers, our carpenters and our office managers --- yum, makes them sound really attractive - now that they're just like men! yuk .. they've become freaks ... physically a woman, yet, mentally a mutant male ...
Brilliant, genius scene, composition and acting ... Can anyone CREATE this type of masterpiece anymore TODAY!?? (rhetorical, they cannot) ... AND, for all the WOMEN who wish they could have men pursue them at this enlightened level - they cannot, and they won't, but for a different reason ... I speak for all Men on this subject, and about "all" women --- women today are simply not deserving of this amorous level ... women have become corrupt of their femininity and essence - they have ...
@ChristineDiana There are a few moments like this where I have made women speechless. It isn't easy when they play back just as well, but I have yet to lose. If you ever need poetry, just ask, and I will write something for you. It has been a life long passion.
Story of my life. I was the Cyrano to my friends Christian. And when he moved away and broke up with her, he told me that she had feelings for me all along...
@MrGrevy Hi Troll! By the way it's sad you've got nothing better to do with your life than going around insulting people. Just thought I'd throw that one out there for you to kick around beings as you've got nothing better to do. Have a nice life
This film (particularly Ferrer's part) is pure 100% genius. One of the most perfect portrayals of any character I've ever seen, he must have been amazing in this on stage. How many actors could make you perfectly believe such flowery language. He deserved the academy award for sure!!
If you liked this movie you should see the 1990 french version. Gerard Depardieu signed here an incredible performance as Cyrano.
Hearing the original verses in their native language only makes the experience more powerful and enthralling, and the verses does actually rhyme, which is a true pleasure.
Destiny has ordained our meeting, bound by the inevitable fold synchronized in loves fleeting labor, a renedzvous of two seeking souls, then now and forever forfiting not my own ,linger ,long lovely lady and make this heart you home, yopu inspire me.
it is asked why guys dont express passion anymore I think it is because they aren't taught to express their feelings of pain or passion so how can they be expected to be able to express their deepest emotions to a woman they love. I've been married for many years and let me say that real love such as I have for my spouse burns just like cyrano speaks of even after a long time and the feeling yearns to be expressed It needs no practice but flows like song or shouts of joy.
William Prince. . . one absurdly underrated actor. Although he has a realtively successful career in Hollywood, Mr. Prince never quite received the accolades he so richly deserved. Trivia Note: Mr. Prince, in later years, played the crooked police chief "Blakelock" in the 1978 Clint Eastwood movie, "The Gauntlet." William Prince, a life long heavy smoker, died of lung cancer in the mid-1980s.
It's sad really, nowadays, all a guy has to say is "I love you" to a girl and she falls for him. We make it way to easy for them. I'd want a guy to work for my hand.
Women cant be like Roxsanne anymore because to be in love with passion and romance as she is would leave her yearning for that which is like the proverbial needle in the haystack she wants he lover to tell her of his feelings for her most men today wouldn't see the point nor would they be equipped to verbalize their feelings if they wanted to it is so sad.
Are you a girl? I guess you are; who ever told you that only girls now are capable of feeling this? or that they are interested? I've tried to say things like that and all I have received are eyes wuthout understanding.
@cacobibliodaks - Then they're not worth your time! Heheh. Seriously, its not about words. But if it is how you truly feel, girls can tell if you mean it. If you truly love her, sometimes words are not needed. Other times, they are needed to communicate fraction of how you feel.
If a man ever spoke poetry to me, it would certainly make me swoon!
@Mushi6618 That kind of Romantic Hero has been ostracized to non-existence by today's youth-oriented, childhood-worshiping, hero-denigrating, feminist culture.
All the arts, poetry, music, acting, the dance, any kind of sentimentality, which is/was the hallmark of Romantic manliness (along with being a warrior) is now viewed by the general population as belonging to the world of the homosexual male.
@LazlosPlane With respect to modern "culture", I believe that those arts are very much alive in the hearts of classical romantics such as myself and - if you will forgive my candor - yourself. I shall opine, perhaps, on the lack of poetry in modern "culture" and language.
Poetry - Forlorn, sadly, is the art of poetry. If men would learn this, the English language could perhaps be intact in levels beyond 140 character snippets of day-to-day life. Sadly, "i <3 u" has become the standard.
I find it amusing how everyone seems to think that this is a romantic scene. Actually, it's one of the high points in the deception Cyrano and Christian have cooked up. Cyrano comes up with the words to woo her while Christian comes in to steal his kiss while "she is willing". As he so romantically puts it "why not make the most of it?" Roxanne herself is not even a woman worth deceiving to win over...her ideals are too high for her to fall in love with either man until the end of the play.
you know nothing of this play. It is not about Roxanne's deception. It is not about Christian. the play is Cyrano de Bergerac. It is his spirit. It is a play about vanity. And fear. Yeah...Cyrano's spirit--his "panache"--is one of the major themes in the play, and there are several key references to it, but it's not the only concept.
Also, I wasn't saying the film was about Roxanne's deception...my bad for not writing clearly enough. Rostand writes several scenes which are critical of an idealized 17th century France, like the opening scene in the theater and the scene with the poets taking advantage of Ragueneau's generosity. The danger of idealization is a huge theme.
I absolutely love this scene. I've seen three versions of this movie and all of them choke me up. Thanks so much for posting this Jose Ferrer version of Cyrano...my favorite! :)
