i saw many to but non around here knew what to do so i found an easy fix, after replacing the engine and everything in there.... buy a new car haha been a month and have had no problems ;D just the way i like it ;D
I've seen many mechanics with this diagnosis and they try changing the chain tensioner or overtightening the timing chain to no avail. The only fix is to get the updated VVT-i camgear.

i get this too sometimes on my toyota voxy.
it has a 1az-fse 2L engine.
i get the startup problem about once every 50 times and idles same as your celica.
there was also some sludge in the engine when i bought it but it's been 2 years now and the noise got a little worse.
i also tried cleaning it by changing the engine oil every 3000-4000km.
the oil now stays clean for 5000km but the noise is still there so i guess i need to get a new vvt-i soon.

I have the same problem :(, I've had some mechanics look at it that race celicas and he said is the timing chain :(
