FWIW According to tablebases it's a draw up until 2:02 Rh5 after that it's something like:
1 ... Ra4 lose in 16
2 Rg3+ win in 16 Kh4 lose in 16
3 Rg2 draw Kh5 lose in 19
4 Rg8 win in 19 Kh6 lose in 9
and Carlsen wins
3 Lots of moves win
3 ... Ra5+ drew
The tablebase seems unclear on the position before Rg3+ before it's played it's a win in 16. After it's played it's a draw by advocating illegal moves!
Svidler knew he blew it because he was shaking his head after his lost two pawns. However, in his defence, we don't know how much time he had on his clock.
Nice play by Carlson. I don't see any draw. If someone sees the draw, state the time of the video and the move that should be played instead of the move that was played.
i cant believe svidler had played so weak... after Bf4 -1:50 he had to start checking the white king and carlsen can do nothing if he cover with the bishop than ..Ra3 and if lights move their king another check follows and the game is draw .. he just got himself into trap
@diodoubled Godamn it, are you a GM? They were playing only with a few seconds on the clock. It is not easy to play the right moves because this endgame needs a lot of accuracy. You should consider that doing perfect moves with 10 seconds on the clock is very hard, even for GM.

it is a theoretical draw of course till move Rh5 even grand masters can not always play certain drawish endings perfectly especially in time trouble

Even a gm can blunder if he is short of time! even a computer can make serious mistakes in shortage of time!

Kh8, then Rh1+, KG8, Rh8+, Kf8, Rh7 and magnus wins the Rock. He cant loose so it was no mistake to give up. only to loose :)
Balderion 4 months ago
last move instead of giving up --- Ra5 looks good .. if Rg8 then ra7 again .. for a draw
and the white cant take the rook
walidibrahim3 4 months ago
@walidibrahim3 then Carlsen will play Rh1 mate, not Rg8

@NormanMinetaTestimon Maybe the 50 moves without capture. I was still thinking wether it could have continued until that comes.

@diodoubled Its not quite so simple - but there was a draw earlier in the ending.

Svidler has to go Kh7 in the final position after Rh1+ Kg8 then Rh8+ Kf7 and Rh7+ skewers the black king and picks up the rook ...
otherwise if Svidler goes Kh5 in the final position it's Rh1 mate.
And if he does something with the rook, white mates with Ra1...
sad position :)
