@miclassicarcade This installation is in Sweden and there it is unacceptable for people to be employeed in this type of work due to Health & Safety concerns. There is a very high risk of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). In this case robots are being used to elevate the nature of work.
@ABBRobotics yeah right, try working in an auto factory.. your telling me putting stuff in boxes is a strain!!! lol.. you people are lazy and not only that want to take jobs from people. I would never buy your products because you use robots. The only robots we use at Ford are welders to weld the bodies because of confined spaces and accuracy reasons. Other wise people assemble our f-150's.. I work in a factory putting shit in boxes isn't work.
to those who say robots are taking away jobs...lets go back to the days of sweat shops and little children stooped over simple sewing machines to make our clothes, days of chopping down trees by hand/laying up logs to form our houses, days of walking behind a team of horses to plow our field for food, days of men laboring in dark, dangerous gas filled mines to dig coal to provide us with heat (oh yeah, we still have that). to days of 8 mile per gallon cars that might last two years. lets go!
ABB gets things like that thanks to the genius of its employees. Still, in the name of profit, the company is laying off workers in the plant of Galindo to hire others in Turkey paying even lower wages. 160 families will be sent straight to misery because of the greed of ABB. Watch the irreverent and unexpected video produced by the workers as protest against the greed of ABB. Search for ABB Galindo "Cierre por pelotas" in YouTube. Shame ABB. All support workers ABB!
Are these robots at all intelligent to detect if a plank has shifted slightly and correct for it? Or do they just continue with their routines until the foreman notices the robots making a mess?
@DualShooter These paritcular robots do not have that facilty as it was not needed. But it is easy to add with a low cost 2D camera based vision system.
People don't really need jobs, people don't really need money. All they need is the stuff that money can buy and some stuff that even money can't buy. If a machine can do create those things better, faster, safer than a person then it should be done. However people need a way to get access to those resources because if you don't have wages to pay people, how are they going to buy the resources that machines help make?
@datafreak667 Me, being the massive wonderguy that I am, have a solution for that as well! Humans do the logic work, and things that robots can't do and robots do things that humans have a hard time doing or simply can't do.
Oh, you say not everyone can get such a job? More robots and the demand will become bigger, education you say? WELL, if you do jack shit in school you'll get a good job so everyone who's lazy can go piss off and suit themselves
I believe humans should not be doing a stagnating work such as this. It does not contribute nothing to brains, nor body (well, perhaps Carpal tunnel syndrom, maybe).
That's why robots are developed. Humans should be doing something a lot more productive.
@scir91 They also don't complain, get tired, get pregnant, get sad, get mad, cold, hot, lazy, board and all the other stuff that makes a person more of a liability than an asset to a company.
Its becoming increasing difficult to get people to do this repetitive lifting & packing jobs & as a society we should be trying to elevate the nature of work in these types of industry.
@ABBRobotics I think people should stop complaining about robots taking their jobs. As robots work with millimetre and millisecond precision as well as constantly throughout the day/week/month.
I would personally get me a bunch of cheap efficient robots rather than employees that don't even work as fast.
@ThePearI but then again this is could bee coming from the cheese of the company if its good for you then screw there jobs and screw the econimy HATS OFF TO YOU
@longlivekarachi People have jobs, just they are no longer back breaking and mind numbing. People's jobs are shifting from manual labor to designing, building, installing, operating and maintaining these type of machines. So instead of the guy stacking wood all day he now has to be retrained to make sure the machine is operating correctly and doing preventative maintenance. One must remember that it takes people to build these machines, more than it takes to operate the machine.

This sort of technology is really interesting me, as a student in my last year of college, studying maths, physics and biology what degrees would you recommend for a career working along this sort of industry?
I'm not sure, but I think mechanical engineering and computer science too. Probably a dual degree or minor in one (Mech Eng with CS minor) would be best. You need the computer science knowledge for the control and feedback algorithms. Check with careers pages on robotics company websites.
The moral of this story is don't try to work a job where you can be replaced by a robot.

shouldn't there be people doing those jobs? I would never buy from this company.

I think the second robot is unnecessary . Gravity and good timing would work just fine

Its beautiful to see how technology is is being used to make more efficient work through robotic arms .......
Its sad to see thousands of people loosing their jobs for this.....
Its more sad to see how rich people pay engineers to build these machines just so they can fulfill their greed for money.....

robots don't require medical insurance or pension plans like human beings ;) we can't wait for them to replace all manual labor!
