The US, Russia, and China have the ability to shoot down satellites that fly in predictable orbits. I'm sure this would also be equiped with sensitive electronics to communicate to troops even if WW3 happens and all satelites are shot down. Spying abiliity is a given and I'm sure it is the reason why the US ordered so few Global Hawk Spy Jet Drones....we knew this would obliterate any spy ability with the endurance of 9 month.

Here's the deal, in the 1950's the U.S. military was working on a reusable spacecraft called Dynasoar, which would glide back to earth & land like an airplane. the U.S. Government shut down the military program & gave it's funding to NASA. who spent it on the incredibly primitive Mercury program. now NASA dicks around, does nothing & the Military has to develope it's own capability to refuel/repair satellites on orbit themselves.
