  • Very very nice..mistake strewn?...well sounds pretty fine to me.

  • Love it. This is one of the best versions of the song that I have heard.

  • @Mediocrityinspades thanks ! I do keep meaning to redo some of these because the video quality is not so good, and I keep meaning to add dozens more new ones, but where does the time go ? :-) I think this was the first one I posted, it was weird having to turn the camera one, then play, i found it really unsettling but gradually got used to it :-)

  • love it .. what tuning please ???

  • just plain old drop D - its a lovely tne to play, thanks for watching

  • Awesome and God bless you!!!!

  • thanks for listening and commenting, glad you enjoyed it :-)

  • wow, I,m still loving this version, theres all sorts going on in this tune. Well played.

  • thanks :-)

  • Hi, any chance of repeating this one a bit slower and with the camera more focussed on the fretboard. I am trying to learn this tune but its a very slow process for me and I could do with seeing your fingerings plus any other help you can give

    cheers

  • Hi there, thanks for commenting, I have been thinking about doing a couple of the tunes on here again since a few people have commented they'd liek to see the fingers more ! :-) I would love to help but its too time consuming outside of a one-one lesson situation and I have very litle spare time - sorry :-(

  • Mate you have done an excellent job on this how about showing us how to play it i'd love to learn it i've liked it since hearing Ry Cooder play the song.

  • Excellent rendition. I have been trying to play this for about 6 months, and while I can get the melody OK, I miss all the tricky bits and bass runs that make it special. Your version has inspired me to keep at it. Many thanks.

  • Hi, thanks for commenting :-) Do keep at it, glad its inspired you :-)

  • I have been playing this for some time but I can't get the great sustained sound you get.

What is the guitar, strings and tuning?

    Great playing by the way!!

  • Hi, thanks for the kind comments :-) Er.. the guitar is one I made myself, cedar top and mahogany back and sides, its shape is not quite right (!) but it sounds wonderful :-) String are standard Martin bronze, light gauage, not phospher, I find them too 'zingy'. Tuning is dropped 'D', as are all Joseph Spence tunes, I think (?). This version has bits of Spence, John Renbourn, Ralph McTell, Ry Cooder and who knows what else in it :-)

  • Brilliant, very enjoyable to listen to. Unfortunately its a bit fast and the camera quality is rather poor so I cant see the fingerings.Great base runs.

    Best Wishes

  • Hi, thanks for commenting :-) I agree its too fast, it wa smy first video and found it a bit of a strange thing to be doing. I should make time to try it again really :-))

  • You put yourself down! You should edit your comment, you may have been nervous but it doesnt show. I like your version, I play it similarly but skip some of the base runs to make it easier for me! Of the other versions referred to I've grown to dislike Renbournes I find it too affected, I shall return to yours for inpiration to work on the tune again.

  • Wow, thanks for the great comments. Its a long time since I've been to a session of any kind but your two waltzes video brought a few memories back :-) I went to Trowbridge a couple of years ago and spent quite some time stood in the session tent watching proceedings with some interest :-)

  • Wow, very impresssive - very small mistakes, if any - and not taking away anything from the whole impression.

    Great timing, cool bass work.

Nice to finally get to see and hear it, A. :-)

I can see that my version still lacks

a "little" bit to be desired, so it's great to have something like this to watch and listen to - and to aim for.

Is this based on the GDFH-tab in Songs for Six Strings II or "home made" ?

    H.

  • Thanks for the kind comments. I make some bad mistakes though, but I was impatient to try uploading a video, now I know its easy I'll be uploading some more, including a 'proper' rendition of this tune :-)

Its not based on anybody's playing in particular, a bit of Ry Cooder, a bit of John Renbourn, a bit of Spence himself,a bit of Ralph McTell, and hopefully quite a bit of me ! I work hard on my basslines so am pleased you commented on that.

  • hI, PLEASE SHOW US HOW TO PLAY THIS TUNE, PLEASE, PLEASE...

  • Awesome ! Loved it ! Would like to hear some more played this well!

  • Great inspirational and lively rendition.
