For some reason, solo-barics sound a lot better in ported boxes... Ive heard both, and i don't care what kicker says, sealed is a bad idea for these subs... They have so much potential... What a waste of subs... Now you can take 2 cheap subs and put them in a sealed box and hit wayy harder!!! Its just sumthin bout those soli barics, they hate sealed boxes, but i personally love sealed boxes, just not for those subs
bass reflex enclosures do not add resonances or color" sound unless your going for a hardwood with a midbass/midrange (that is the doing of the wood). Waves are coupled and become efficient as you draw closer to tuned freq. below that the sub is pretty much free air. And yes sealed and will produce a tighter/transient sound and also hass more excursion at most freq. unlike ported that has little or no excursion at its tuned freq.
@iggy1008 , Sound is pressure waves. High pressure low pressure high pressure low pressure. Ported cabinets and band pass cabinets alter the sound reproduction by adding resonant frequencies. That my be a desired effect and can be used enhance the response of specific frequencies but a sealed enclosure deliver better accuracy. So if you want to hear your audio the way as it was intended sealed enclosures are usually the way to go. Particularly with high end drivers.
@TheGrowdaddy Sound is Pressure Waves. But, bass is air vibrations. Air is a substance that flows. So, by restricting the flow of air you restrict the amount of air the subs can vibrate around you. However it's true that sealed boxes are more efficient on less powered subs. Feeling lazy don't want to explain any more :D.
Sealed box with 2400watts...?in my experience if u got enough power ported is way better. Sealed box only good if u got low power. Push to much power on sealed box=blown speakers
@Mharbaugh420 I mean how would that even make sense?... if the box is sealed, it's going to restrict the movement.. Causing less excursion.. causing it harder to blow. Yea it might get a little hotter, but it's not going to blow like if it was in a sealed box on the same power.
@Mharbaugh420 are you blind lol. It is an audiobahn amp. That is prolly 1200 watts rms and I am guessing at 14.4 volts with full gain you would get 1000 heavily clipped watts out of it. LOL.
hey can some one help me i have a kenwood amp its 1800 watts max and 500 rms but i think just one of these subs run at 1000 rms so if i bought one and hooked it up to my amp would it still hit real hard even thought its only gettin half of what its callin for? i already have a rockford fosgate punch (500 watts rms) and the dual bandpass 2 12s running at 600 rms (my starter system) but looking to replace the duals with one 15" l7.

o.k. for those of YOU WHO DONT KNOW a sealed box will handle more power easy as a ported will not a ported is louder but a sealed is deeper and dude for real i can bang two kicker cvx 10s on 1000.1 kicker amp and you can hear me from over a block away easy ported or vented its all on you SO COME ON GUYS STOP TALKING CRAP about sealed this or ported that it all will sound good if you hook it up right and use GOOD WIRES cause i swear some of yall need to learn ohms law LOOK IT UP gezzz
These year model subs have a flaw in the design. If you want solo batics buy the charcol colored ones or the latest ones. They have fixed the flaw which is the terminal wire to the voice coil.
To the last 2 comments well said. I'm a sealed box man and if the subs blow oh well I'll just get more. Why buy a electronics and not push them to the limits here and there?
Personal preference and size limitations will both play a role in the decision between sealed or ported enclosures. If you have the room, and you want to get loud, go with a ported box. If you're limited on space or are looking for the best sound quality possible, it would generally be best to go with a sealed box. sealed sounds better hits the lows real good i got 2 15 l7's in a seald box.. fuk it if they pop they pop.. buy him a ported box wo ever dnt like his seald box..
I don't like porter boxed. Boxed is sealed perfect and is filled with ploy fill which makes thendubs think there are in a bigger box. I just never carpeted thr box because I ended up selling the subs. I have 4 L7 12 in my c220 Benz. Song is "we get the money" by hollow tip. A Sacramento ca, USA rap artist. I
i agree with the guys sayin that sealed boxes are better. ive had alot of ported boxes before with diff types of subs n switched them into a sealed box n they always hit way harder n the lows are ridiculous compared to ported boxes. sealed boxes are the deff way to go.
U people crack me up and u obviously don't know shit about subs if u have port noise and all that other shit. If u have port noise ur port is 2 big. It doesn't take alot of port to get the air flowin through a box. And u dumbasses that think sealed boxes are louder are stupid the air flow is what makes a sub loud u can have a shitty sub in a nice box and it will be loud. I have this exact same setup but in a ported box an it slams
L 7's arnt known for their SQ they are known for their SPL.... sealed boxes arnt known for their SPL they are known for their SQ.... see the difference??
Dumbest shit I've ever heard. You dont simply cut holes in a box to allow "air to escape". A properly built sealed box sounds great. A "ported" box is built to a specific frequency range for greater low end bass especially for Rap music. The ports arent to allow air to escape but rather to allow a specific frequency of sound waves out to bolster the soundwaves being deflected back from the subs into the cabin. Thus deeper bass from ported boxes.
@Cirux321 I actually prefer the accuracy/tightness in sound of a sealed enclosure. I don't care for port noise, which you will get no matter how well your box is built.
It must be a well tuned, and crafted box. I used to have a ported box and at extreme volumes I would get port noise. I went from 2 12's in a ported enclose to a single kicker 12 in a sealed enclosure, and to me i prefer the sealed sound even though its not a "loud" as the ported enclosure; but then again it was 2 12's vs 1 12.
@ehinton Were they round ports? Did you ever look into those dimpled ports which get smoother airflow? Just curious. I'm a big fan of sealed enclosures too.
@lowoxygen it was a a box with a none flared slot port in the middle of two 12's. I have never heard of a dimple port, but it makes me curious, what effect does it have on frequency response?
@ehinton It really shouldn't have any effect on the frequency response, since that is still based on the size of the box, and the cross-sectional area and length of the port. What it does though is kind of the same thing as the dimples on a golf ball, to create a more laminar airflow, especially at higher speeds (i.e. louder volume). I saw them used on Bowers & Wilkins speakers.
@ehinton Klipsch is definitely nice. To be honest, I'd probably never own a set of B&Ws cause they're too damn expensive. At 40grand a pair for the top end ones, I'll save my money and buy a truck instead. The science behind them is cool though. I use a lot of their ideas when I build my boxes.
@loked2thebrain When you have a ported or bandpass box, if the air moving in and out of the box (from the subs pushing/pulling) moves too quickly for the size of the port, then you can get turbulence, which actually makes its own noise.
i had my kickers ported, but didnt like it. it rattled the shit out of my car, plus the pressure on my ears, my ears would pop. it all depends on the user what kind of sound they want.
@Cirux321 Actually, you get much deeper bass from sealed box. And Higher bass with ported. Sais so on all the forums, and "how to build a box" website. Tells you all about boxes.
@blkout15 actually, if designed right and with a better quality subwoofer, sealed boxes are better for sound quality purposes. Kicker L7's as sweet as they are, will never be good for sound quality. You need JL W7 or W6 or Focal Utopia or Morel Ultimo. Cirux321 hit it right on the money about ported boxes. Problem with ported boxes in a vehicle is that there isn't enough space in a vehicle to really use them properly.
@blkout15 That's either because these are bottoming out causing distortion or because the mic on the cam is clipping, either way, not the fault of the box. Do some research, when done correctly both sealed and ported both can sound great, but sealed is TYPICALLY (I can't emphasize that enough) better for lower, tighter bass while ported is better for louder bass, but as I said this is only true in some, maybe most cases, the opposite can just just as easily be true. It depends on the setup.
one last thing, trapped air in a seal enclosure doesn't push back on your sub, it holds it in place, if you have a perfectly sealed box and push down on the sub it will slowly come back up, but the opposite is true when your speaker is pushed OUT by the music, the air pressure (vacuum?) inside the box pulls the sub back quicker and gives it more control. So it ends up as a clearer sound, but you lose some volume because of that.
Typically people run sealed for rock and ported or bandpass for rap. Most rap runs 50hz and down but rock bass can be higher lots of times cause it usually played on a bass guitar and not a keyboard or a computer made bass sine wave of some kind. Not to say one is better than the other, again its all in your tastes and application.
lol to be honest, ima bass freak and i know for a fact unless u want hardly any bass do that. but dont listen to that dude, sealed is bad because its trapped air witch pushes back on your speakers. doesnt hurt them much but it isnt good. thats why u have holes in a bass box to let air flow in and sound go out.
sealed works fine man i have a sealed box it plays highs better and ported plays the lows better theres nothing wrong or damaging to your subs if they are in a sealed box just different audio qualities
eh i dont know as much as i think i do and im sure ur right but i always get the bass from the ports because i have a sub for my computer and all its bass vibrations come out of the hole and when i seal it hardly any but hey you have how u like them thats why u can cusomize them
Your computer speaker is probably a "bandpass" enclosure, which means the speaker has a seal enclosure on one side and ported on the other, so if you plug the port obviously hardly any sound will come out. Ported enclosures are "tuned" to a frequency and will be louder at that freq. Seal enclosures tend to have a flatter response across a given range and usually sound "tighter". There are also isobaric and free air enclosures and probably some others, just depends on what you tastes in music
u should get them sealed up in a nice big enough size box and run 0 gauge and do the big 3 upgrade and also upgrade your battery to a drycell gel batt. amp recomendations for those are kicker, rockford fosgate, hifonics and make sure it is at least no lower than 1500 watt RMS but 2000 rms will be just perfect man
im rolling with 2 15" l7s. i think their 08s. i made a sealed box out of 3/4" mdf. About 2-2.3 cubic feet with the sub in there. planet audio 3000 watt amp and 0 gauge. i need to hook my cap up and upgrade my battery and alt too

SEALED SUCK AMP IS GARBAG
MrBabykush 2 years ago
5cubes of sealed air is not bad at ALL, maybe a bit small for 15's but still not bad.
And that amp is pretty good, my buddy has two on his 21" death penalty.

one last thing, trapped air in a seal enclosure doesn't push back on your sub, it holds it in place, if you have a perfectly sealed box and push down on the sub it will slowly come back up, but the opposite is true when your speaker is pushed OUT by the music, the air pressure (vacuum?) inside the box pulls the sub back quicker and gives it more control. So it ends up as a clearer sound, but you lose some volume because of that.
ecoots 2 years ago
Typically people run sealed for rock and ported or bandpass for rap. Most rap runs 50hz and down but rock bass can be higher lots of times cause it usually played on a bass guitar and not a keyboard or a computer made bass sine wave of some kind. Not to say one is better than the other, again its all in your tastes and application.
ecoots 2 years ago
Nah sealed boxes offer more bass vol but reg boxes give more sound quality
Speedeers 2 years ago
lol to be honest, ima bass freak and i know for a fact unless u want hardly any bass do that. but dont listen to that dude, sealed is bad because its trapped air witch pushes back on your speakers. doesnt hurt them much but it isnt good. thats why u have holes in a bass box to let air flow in and sound go out.
dildog01 2 years ago
its not "letting sound out" dipshit its just a way the sub is regulated for certian freqs
sealvonroretz 2 years ago
sealed works fine man i have a sealed box it plays highs better and ported plays the lows better theres nothing wrong or damaging to your subs if they are in a sealed box just different audio qualities
Fooled26 2 years ago
eh i dont know as much as i think i do and im sure ur right but i always get the bass from the ports because i have a sub for my computer and all its bass vibrations come out of the hole and when i seal it hardly any but hey you have how u like them thats why u can cusomize them
dildog01 2 years ago
Your computer speaker is probably a "bandpass" enclosure, which means the speaker has a seal enclosure on one side and ported on the other, so if you plug the port obviously hardly any sound will come out. Ported enclosures are "tuned" to a frequency and will be louder at that freq. Seal enclosures tend to have a flatter response across a given range and usually sound "tighter". There are also isobaric and free air enclosures and probably some others, just depends on what you tastes in music
ecoots 2 years ago
actually a sealed box is much healthier for the subs; they can handle more power and are much more controlled.
i ended up saying fuck the Cap and did the big 3 upgrade and its golden now.

Im Planning on getting two 15' 2000Watts L7 For my G35 Sedan But I dont have A setup plan yet If anyone has any suggetions Hit me up
TheCowboys805 2 years ago
u should get them sealed up in a nice big enough size box and run 0 gauge and do the big 3 upgrade and also upgrade your battery to a drycell gel batt. amp recomendations for those are kicker, rockford fosgate, hifonics and make sure it is at least no lower than 1500 watt RMS but 2000 rms will be just perfect man
loudkickerman 2 years ago

haha a sealed box, you crazy putting those in there try a ported youll be like wtf? i shoulda done this long time ago.
op9081 2 years ago
i have a 12 l7's in a sealed box will it be a lot louder if i cut ports?
drosmoka33 2 years ago
Man you can't just cut ports
You have to build a whole new box with the port built to specifications(or as close as possible)
A port isn't just a hole in the box
QuestioningAnswers 2 years ago
na you need a bigger box for ports
LotsOfPaypa 2 years ago
wow, why spend 400+ on subs and 10$ on the box? It sounds like midgets beating on a trashcan lid with drumsticks.

you dont know anything about building custom boxes fool
a 8'x4' sheet of 3/4" MDF board cost $30 by itself
then you need all the tools to measure and cut it,
but i bet you've never done that yourself, your one of those guys who let somebody else build your system if you even got one...probly dont
and its bieng recorded with a digital camera....ie it dosent sound anywhere near what it sounds like in person
what a retard
