It is just that simple. All you need to do is unstrap the two fork straps and unplug the light from the harness and lift it off of the bike. Then just install the number plate. You should have no clearance issues with the stock display.
Is it as simple as removing your headlight and number plate and replacing it with a normal number plate for racing? I have a ktm exc 350-f 2012. The only concern i have is if a normal numberplate will fit on to the front because the speedo/odometer display is in front of the bars
