  • The elephant was not doing it on his own. But still good job.

  • Wow, cool video. This just goes to prove just how intelligent elephants are. To do something like this takes concentration and excellent eye/trunk coordination. Further proof, if any were needed, that we need to save these majestic and intelligent animals.

  • Glad everyone is enjoying the video. For those who are curios, this was taken at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center in Northern Thailand, which has a free hospital for wounded Thai elephants. The paintings are one of the ways they provide income to sustain their conservation efforts.

  • Okay, next time, no trunk holding!

  • um, this is just the lerning process

thats why he got to hold the trunk

  • :( Is it at a circus? They abuse animals!

  • they try so hard! Do you see how the trunk shakes like a person with Alzheimer's arthritis - like a little kid trying to draw! The concentration is awesome - even if it's a learned trick, the effort on the part of the elephants shouldn't be overlooked!

  • I've seen a lot of videos of elephants painting and I think this is one of the methods they use to teach them how to paint. This one has learned how to properly hold the brush (instead of wrapping it's trunk around it) and put the tip to the paper. There just a few vids of mahouts guiding their heads by the tusk. After they've learned to paint they tend to keep their heads still and move their trunks around to paint. Cool vid, hope he picks up the skill!

  • right...that guy tugging his tusks is the real artist!?!?!

  • Indeed this might seem to be the case here. However, there are many more examples of elephants painting without any guidance (other than being handed a new brush with fresh paint). We personally saw elephants painting stunning images at a Chiang Mai elephant camp in Northern Thailand.

  • I agree with you...I've seen that as well (however, not in person, but on tv...I don't get out much :) ) I think that once news spread about some authentic elephants painting pictures, all of a sudden, everyone's "pet" elephant became a Picasso... Regardless, having a drawing that was painted by a brush, which was held by an elephant (guided by a person or not) is something nice to have.
