All in all, I am rather in agreement with Garry Willis that the Second Amendment was to prevent the necessity of creating a standing army. Remember, this was one of the biggest concerns that American colonists had toward the British at the time; that the standing army was not in civilian control. Since the Constitution gives Congress this civilian control via the right to create and support armies, the Second Amendment simply makes it unnecessary to seek out a standing army.
