Spain played an evil game. No longer a conquering / colonizing nation, no outsider to feed off on. Through the 1900's Spain had nothing to give it's people from no where. It's people were left poor. In the long run it's good that Franco won. Imagine a Cold War Europe where a pro-Soviet Communist Spain existed, giving the Russians a foothold in Western Europe and directly threatening both France and Gibraltar. Franco wasn't the nicest fellow in the world but ultimately it was better to have him as a non-factor in Europe for forty years than to have to worry about a belligerent communist state on our side of the Iron Curtain.

But on the other hand, he banned Freemasonry and other secret societies. The Thule Society was exempt only because of Himmler's intervention. The nationalist party wasn't fascist: it didn't suppress religion, it wasn't expansionist, and it was mildly capitalist (both fascism and communism are anti capitalist). The Nationalists were horrible and oppressive, yes, but not compared to the reds.

In the long run it's good that Franco won. Imagine a Cold War Europe where a pro-Soviet Communist Spain existed, giving the Russians a foothold in Western Europe and directly threatening both France and Gibraltar. Franco wasn't the nicest fellow in the world but ultimately it was better to have him as a non-factor in Europe for forty years than to have to worry about a belligerent communist state on our side of the Iron Curtain.

It is possible the Hitler's view on Christianity had been negatively modified by the influence of works of one part of the Volkisch thinkers. But on the other hand, he banned Freemasonry and other secret societies. The Thule Society was exempt only because of Himmler's intervention. In fact, if someone tries to connect the whole idea of NS to Occultism or some sort of "Paganism", he'd better see this connection in Himmler himself, not the NSDAP as a whole.

It is necessary to make a difference between (1) some form of "Mystic Paganism", which was mocked and condemned by Hitler himself and (2)"romantic sentiment for the Indo-European culture"(common IE or Aryan heritage, tales, ...) which is acceptable (as far as I know) even by Catholics (I'm a Catholic myself), as the Church recognises naturally established communities (the nation, etc.).

Perhaps if Hitler wasn't so radical(or fanatical)in some views he'd begun to have in his youth, the regime would've been closer to the Franco's, Salazar's or other outspokenly pro-Catholic ones. Besides that, we don't know if some pro-Christian political changes wldn't have had occurred in Germany after his death. One of his biggest mistakes was that he surrounded himself by occult or Pro-Pagan thinking peeple, such as Himmler, Rosenberg or Darre, without knowing its consequences.

What makes Fascism different from right-wing authoritarianism is (besides the controlled economy) fascists are socially conservative for totally secular reasons.
IE Mussolini outlawed abortion due to the fact a main goal of Italy was to increase the population, or Hitler had a different role for woman due to tradition

The nationalist party wasn't fascist: it didn't suppress religion, it wasn't expansionist, and it was mildly capitalist (both fascism and communism are anti capitalist). The Nationalists were horrible and oppressive, yes, but not compared to the reds.

But ponder this - Franco assured that power be handed over to a constitutional monarchy, complete with a democratically elected parliament, at the time of his death. He strong-handed that transition. Franco's refusal to pact with Hitler saved allied forces in Africa. He seized control of a country bled dry by civil war and jailed all the fascists and anarchist elements, paving the road for a constitutional monarchy. He saved Spain from a ruthless soviet-style dictatorship, the type of oppression that destroyed communist nations. Was he a dictator? Never doubt it, but In my opinion as a historian his lesser evil spared an entire nation from a much greater one.

@MrReco12 Oftentimes democratically elected governments have been used as the launching point for totalitarian manipulators whose goals are to destroy democracy, i.e. Adolf Hitler. YES, Franco was a Fascist, and a Corporatist, and executed many. But would have Largo Caballero's Communist government budged after it had entrenched itself in power? Don't even think it. There are no precedents of democratically handing power over to another party in communist states.
