@StrawberryRizla Just because you don't like words in your music - 'Read a book if you want a story' - doesn't mean other people don't. Hypocrite? I'm not the one commenting on a story-telling song about how much I'm not into story-telling songs.....you're a funny guy :)
@xavierian218 Randy sings with a little of New Orleans in his voice. That's why you were surprised that he's white. He also comes from a long line of composers of music for the movies.
I don't think it's the raggedness of Randy's voice that makes his version so special. It's his timing and phrasing. He starts the vocal phrases a little late, a little early; he doesn't care. He does that in other ballads. You can hear it in "Everytime it Rains," which is a ridiculously self-pitying ballad if you read the lyrics. Something about the whifty timing keeps you on your toes, draws you in.
@samenewme Well said, but I think it's a little of both personally. We can all agree that Randy doesn't have the greatest vocals, but theres something about that, that just adds to all his songs. His timing and phrasing does have a huge impact as you've stated.
@ChynaRider I totally understand where you are coming from pal. Recently i was in a situation where i couldnt decide between two girls who both wanted me and I didnt know which one to choose. We were sitting around at my place and this song came on the radio. I decided right there and then I wasnt going to mess around any more, took them both upstairs and smashed both their back doors in. Best ever. Thanks Randy.
@RewindMJ i'm a trained vocalist, and i can never get this song right. he wrote it for bonnie raitt to sing in faust, and it just does not seem to come across with a "good" voice. we had this song as our first dance at our wedding, and my wife, who could never stand his voice, would not have had it any other way at the wedding. i'm not saying you're wrong, his voice is , shall we say, different, but listen to linda ronstat do this. beautiful voice, but just not the feeling.
@bensdadfrank I totally agree. Randy's version of this song completely blows away anyone else's attempt at it. I love Linda Ronstadt's voice but was disappointed when I listened to her rendition of it. It lacked the depth that Randy captured so well. Songs are not one size fits all for performers. I would cringe at the thought of Randy Newman singing "Long long time." lol
I just returned home from seeing Randy Newman in concert at the Strathmore in Bethesda, MD. He closed the evening with this song - so very touching. Thank you for playing this Randy (and asking the audience what songs to play). Great show everyone. Go and see him live in concert if you can - he's even better live than his recorded albums. Thanks Randy for creating such a touching song.
I thought this song was touching. I don't understand how Newman can not like the song himself. What's not to like about it? Oh well, at least the thousands of fans like it.
I have never heard a song so true to myself, he is a true genius, this is the only song iv ever cried too, and i mean really balled not a corner of my eye tear, i love this song xxxxxxxxxxxx
The music industry as it is at present is set up to entertain the simple minded masses, No originality, just catchy club beats and basic repetitive lines. We seem to be regressing and that's very sad.
@777gonz nah, its a bet between god and the devil and a girl falls in love with the main charachter sort of a cross between the biblical Job and the Faust of literature and ends up dying for him later . its a real mess of an opera I saw it opeinng inight and it never really worked as a play still a nice album if you want to listen to it. The devil was played by the neighbor on MARIED WITH CHILDRENS, he can dance and sing! and HE WAS a great devil.
I was driving down the road with my wife when I first heard this on the radio. We suddenly stopped talking and listened. By the end of the song, I'd pulled off the road. We sat and cried, held each other, and renewed our vows right there - to and with eachother. Thanks Randy.

God Bless you for your love. I hope that it is still strong. In the old world there is one core that holds this thing together and it has to be something like this kind of love. So many of us just come and go and never touch this kind of thing. Keep that heart open.
This is a song about loss, loneliness, redemption, the end of yearning. Most of us sadly never find ' home' again which makes the song more poignant. This is a masterpiece Randy.Love it.
@MrEurohold Typical Newman...... because I hear something else.....in that love (possibly when you're a little older) feels like home. Comfortable, warm and safe. A slightly different view but equally poignant. Either way it's one great song. Only Randy Newman has written better!!
If it's between Randy Newman and Bob Dylan, it would be a tough call. Because this song is so tender and open that it breaks everything down. It's like a hymn.
@grainofsandfan I think the one Dylan song that would easily hold its own against this is Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands. Now that is a true master piece
Randy Newman songs are so good at understanding the human condition by making us laugh and cry and fall in and out of love...and touch on the characters we all know, enjoy and love and despise. Among singer/songwriters in the world.
It's his Faust album from about 1993. I think it had runs in San Diego and Chicago, but never made it to Broadway. Too cynical and smart for the Great White Way.
This song is why Randy Newman is the most incredibly brilliant, twisted songwriter who ever lived. He writes a song for his own dark version of a Broadway musical, about a beautiful, young woman -- so damaged by her childhood that she's incapable of love -- who sings this to the devil to seduce and trick him (and succeeds in breaking his heart, btw) and it becomes everybody's favorite love song and a wedding standard. I guess it really does prove that out of the dark comes light
You've hit it exactly: Randy Newman carries irony to a new level among "popular" artists. No one else reflects that genius. I've been waiting for 30 years for him to be recognized for Kennedy Center honors. I hope it yet happens in his (and my) lifetime. He's a unique American.
our first dance at our wedding, and my wife can' t stand his voice. shows you the power of his lyrics. love the "my old kentucky home" piano part in the chorus.
i (l) randy newman. my dad got me interested in him, and i remember listening to his CD and hearing that song "simon smith and the amazing dancing bear" and writing a play about it in the third grade, and my teachers decided to make it into our annual musical. it was so fun!
@tomjesper i indeed recognised the voice, but as i said i thought it sounded like van morrison, very similar tone really - especially when you haven't heard either in a long time
I think this original is so much better than Chantal Kreviazuks version... She sings it too beautiful. I think some songs are better when not sung perfectly and without a brilliant singing voice. But with feeling. This is beautiful. I can lisen to it all night, other than Chantals version. Thanks for uploading.
makes me cry like a baby. from beginning to end. it reminds me too much of someone i lost and miss so much. i don't think anyone would feel as sad about this song as i do,

I have to say... I just hear this song for the first time 2 weeks ago. It touched me and still does. I used to live in a Caribbean Island and 3 years ago I moved to the States. A lady from the choire sang the song and I cryed... I somehow homesick.
I love this version...somehow, it seems the most sincere I've ever heard...

A great song. A dutch singer, Carola Smit, sings this song also beautifull. Look her up, she is great.

I have to say... I just hear this song for the first time 2 weeks ago. It touched me and still does. I used to live in a Caribbean Island and 3 years ago I moved to the States. A lady from the choire sang the song and I cryed... I somehow homesick.
