That was meant as an inner joke by Tarantino, in my opinion. Because for the Europeans tipping is not an obvious thing. They only give waiting tables people tips if they think they deserve it in contrast with the people in US who give tips automatically.
Mr. Orange is the only one who got himself convinced by Mr. Pink because Tim Roth(Mr. Orange) is European who knows that this tipping automatically is for the birds, ya know!
Planet Terror was Robert Rodriguez's movie, and even thought QT's "Death Proof" wasn't excactly his style and I personally loved Reservoir Dogs most of his movies, Death Proof was cool anyway. Stuntman Mike character played by Kurt Russell was really entertaining and the muscle cars 1970 chevy nova and dodge charger (it was charger as much as I remember :) ) were cool.
If I could post a picture of a baby sooking on here it would be appropriate for the boring whining masquerading as movie critiquing that you morons carry on with.
Ain't it terrific that everybody attacks Mr. Pink for not tipping a frigging BUCK to the waitress, and that while they're robbing a bank a few hours later they might take with them the entire life savings of some other waitress, who might be client of the bank?
Oh sorry, thought it was a bank job. I haven't seen the movie in a long while. But still, isn't it a total contradiction? They argue about upholding an unwritten law, yet they break written laws on a daily basis.
You're making a point I completely agree but the whole idea behind this movie is the contradiction of these characters, they are generous yet they rope, they are tolerant yet they're racist, they're nice yet they're violent. That's Tarantino's style creating authentic characters that you might actually meet in real life and not just gangster stereotypes.
(Btw, in case you thought I was criticizing the rationale of the movie: I wasn't. I was just pointing out the brilliance of Tarantino as a screenwriter.)
"I got Madonna's big d*** coming out of one ear, and Toby the Jap, I don't know who out of the other'. Love that line.
On another note, when they are discussing 'Light's Went Out in Georgia', Fast Eddie says that Vicki Lawrence shot Andy. That's not true. Andy got framed for the disappearance of his wife and they hung him, didn't they? He was never shot.
The whole movie, which is a GAY LOVE STORY, is in the frames at 1m50s. TIM ROTHS CHARACHTER HAS BEEN GETTING DICK DICK DICK FROM HARVEY KEITELS CHARACTER.Which is how he won his trust. When Tarantino is say 'Its hurts' Tim Roth is just squirming, cause its a very recent experience for him, and Keitel actually has his arm around him, and looks equally uncomfortable..... So the film is'Harvey Keitel defends his gay, undercover cop lover to the death.'..AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT?
Actually, the first one to have said that great line is James Cagney, whose character in 'Angels with Dirty Faces' said "You slap me in a dream, you better wake up and apologize." But Ali said it too, that's true. Might have taken it from Cagney...
Wish the audio was a bit louder, but other than that, this is one of my favorite scenes. These people don't even know each others names and they're laughing and having a good time, exchanging stories, jokes, views, etc. Good stuff.
It's intersting that the tipping conflict set the pace for the character development in the movie between Mr. Pink and Mr. White. Mr White was empathetic and Mr. Pink stood his ground. It's reflective of everything to come in the movie. Much more than an arguement about tipping.
There's other things in this scene. Mr Blonde says quite casually that he's willing to kill one of his colleagues. Mr Orange 'squeals' on Mr Pink to Joe. And Eddie shows his ability to miss important details.
i like how they are walking down the street and showing all their names and tarantino puts the only one who is a cop last, for some reason i just find that interesting
Its amazing how these conversations draw you in as an audience and its something tarantino has perfected. like the talk about amsterdam/mcdonalds in pulp fiction or the car convo's in death proof. it attracts you to the characters in such a strange way. And best of all tarantino manages to make all of these fairly regular conversations sound so cool and charge the atmosphere with intensity. An amazing director i would give my left nut to meet him one day. Oh an im english an i dont tip!
iv always thought quentin tarantino was a pretty good actor. definatly better in some and worse in others, but i mean, some people are naturally dramatic speakers. my uncle is, and so is my grandpa. :)
My freshman year of college I lived in a private dorm that was attached to a small shopping mall on its lower levels. There was an arthouse in the mall that had Reservoir Dogs as the midnight show for several months. It was like $5 to see a movie there, way cheap even in '94. Whenever I had a day with no classes, I would get baked and go see it the night before. I must have seen it there a dozen or more times, and the slow-mo walk opening sent shivers of joy up my spine every time. So damn cool.
i think his acting has got better but in dogs he's tried to hard, note that he makes sure he is seen tipping in clearly to make a point which is stupid cause he wrote the fuckin script
I think his worst was his stupid cameo in "Desperado". This was at the height of Quentinmania, around '95, and every trailer and TV spot had his ugly mug saying "It's cool, ese" in this ridiculous faux-Mexican accent (though he was playing an American).
And the funny thing is, he only started writing scripts so he could cast himself as an actor, initially.
Fun bit of trivia: QT's first acting coach was Roscoe P. Coletraine (James Best) from "The Dukes of Hazzard".
I agree with you in some cases, but, I feel that this is the only scene in any movie he has done well. He didn't do a good job for the rest of the movie and he was less than spectacular as Jimmy in Pulp fiction but in this opening scene I thought he nailed it.

okay people, Tarantino is VERY overrated. Res Dogs and Pulp Fiction were great, but after that he went from mediocre with Jackie Brown to even worse with the Kill Bills and then to absolute horrible shit with Death Proof. Tarantino has NOT grown as a writer OR filmmaker. A GREAT screenwriter/filmmaker will evolve, they will move on and try new things, new genres and NOT just keep writing the SAME old fucking dialogue OVER and OVER again. Kevin Smith is just as bad.
Filmpotato13: I must agree with you. Tarantino's first two movies are great, but the rest, not so good -- although I did enjoy most of the "Kill Bill" movies. He also has a fascination with the word, "nigger." I actually think "Reservoir Dogs" is better than "Pulp Fiction," by maybe a nose.
You retards can thumbs down this guy all you want but you know it's fucking true. Jackie brown was alright, but kill bill 1 & 2 were hogshit. Death proof was absolutely miserable, save the end scene. His "nigger" fascination is hilarious in my opinion, but as for his movies, they've been a sharp slope downwards the whole time. I think he has a cocaine addiction or something.
haha. That's a good line. I prefer the Coen Brothers over Tarantino, but this is a very, very good movie. Not as good as Pulp Fiction, but still quite gripping.
What's the name of the song it's fucking cool!!

okay people, Tarantino is VERY overrated.

"I'd go over 12 percent for that..."
haha. That's a good line. I prefer the Coen Brothers over Tarantino, but this is a very, very good movie. Not as good as Pulp Fiction, but still quite gripping.
