@TreborG2 Because it's legitimately funny. Just because it was in the script doesn't mean it came across as funny on paper. I could watch this scene 1000 times in a row and I would still laugh at it. Michael Winslow makes this scene funny, but Rick Moranis' reactions also make it funny. Perhaps Mel Brooks thought it was funny that Winslow chuckled and decided to leave it in. He wasn't exactly out to make a serious movie.

The best comedies are when the actors pretend that what they are doing is normal/serious...most comedies would've reshot the scene, cautioned Michael about the reaction (even though like you say, it its more funny having it happen) then would have the reaction shot for bloopers. Look at CaddyShack, Blazzing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, all very funny movies, I cant think of any scene they left an actors laugh-reaction in unless it was scripted.

Sandurz and short-tempered Dark Helmet right in front of him, he'd be laughing, which would only incite them more? Especially with his groin in danger of being assaulted by Helmet's ring? I know I wouldn't. The fact that they didn't react to his laugh tells me it wasn't scripted.

They had to have heard it, someone must have chosen to leave it.. but it would be nice to know the conversation, the thoughts did Brooks just say "F it.. its funny, leave it" or did they really not realize he (Winslow) *had* reacted so then making it really a golden egg.. :)

But it is proof they didn't edit so much out when they did the movie.. Probably more due to the budget.. The movie after all was done as a joke.
