  • I agree: Let the opponent earn the win instead of resigning. I have won several games since typically the opponent with a strong position may get careless thinking the game is already won. There is so much to learn in the endgames.

  • at 7:04 i believe you missed a game winning move-pawn to a4. The king would have to take and you could merely march your pawn to victory...

  • At 7:00 what happens if a4?

  • You played your side really well. There aren't any improvements I could see on your game. Congratulations with the victory! Also do you have a chess rating? I'm guessing you're somewhere in the range of Class B to expert.

  • I'd argue that, after the queen exchange, white's passed d pawn, potential for connected passed pawns with the exchange of the c pawns, black's distance from the queen side, and black's lack of a passed pawn all make up for the 1 pawn down. That's just me though.

  • @gotaids Black's h-pawn is passed

  • Hey, I would just like to say that I am watching this video and I have paused it on the second move where black plays h6 to h5. I just wanted to say that I am looking at this now and if it were me playing I would have played King g3 to f4, attacking 2 pawns at the same time and winning the e4 pawn.

I'm not saying this because I believe it to be a better move, I am just starting to really get into chess and I must say my end game knowledge is diabolical. Please say why is this not a good move?

  • @KingRingSting

I had similar thoughts when I first saw it but then I realized g5+ by black was a killer blow. If white takes the g5 pawn black pushes either e3 or g3, then once whites pawn takes he pushes the other pawn to promotion. If white decides to take on e4 blacks h pawn runs down the board unopposed and white can't make it back in time due to the pawn on g4. Also blacks king just runs in front of the d pawn if white starts to push it so that doesn't help.

  • I totally agree. Fight it out till the end. Ecspecially when playing amateur games. You'll be amazed by how many people have little to no endgame knowledge. And they'll throw away winning positions because of it.

  • As a noobie starting out I'm looking at many analysis vids and I found this to be one of the clearest and best to understand. I'll definitely be subscribing - thanks!!!

  • i think that at 2:33 you should have played king to f4, which would have allowed you to capture black's e4 pawn. that would not only neutralize black's material advantage but also put you in a much better position since you have the same material except he has doubled pawns on the g file and you have an overwhelming 4-2 pawn advantage on the left side of the board.

  • awesome comeback jrobi I have watched a lot of your vids and they really helped me become a better chess player

  • gr8n video!!!man u rock!!!!!

  • This is a very strange video of yours because it's very lame compared to the others: the black player is obviously not aware of the protected passed pawn idea, trying to do something awkward on the queenside. I think that the queen trade was completely unfavourable to black, because after it I completely favour white, I don't see why you think that black is any better.

  • I'm a noob chess player with a rating around 1300 starting this Jan. I haven't resigned once !

My viewpoint is, I can learn the opponent's victory and my own mistakes.

Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy 'em.

  • Out of 438 blitz games, I won 290 and 17 draws of them. Out of 275 bullet games, I won 260 of them. And out of 67 standard games I won 20,and drew 10 times.

  • I've also just discovered your videos. You are a marvelous teacher. Thanks for not only your insight but your passion and positive spirit. Exceptional in an age of web cynicism.

  • In the whole game when you had the 3 pawns in a nice possition on the a,b and c file, you could moved them all one step forward. You move around with your king unnecessary, you just repeat some moves. It looks to me a better position because your 1 step closer to queening your pawn, and the opponnents pawn wont move 2 squares, i think, so what stopped you? Im sure you have a good reason, but i cant find it ;)

  • @Robocop131313 How stupid of me, if the king will be in range of the c-pawn, he can easily take it after the b-pawn moves! Didnt see the most easy way!

  • just asking is there such a move with pawns called "capture while passing" in french its when the pawn is a space in front of another pawn on the 7th or 2nd row then captures the pawn as it advances to the 4th or 5th row?

  • would it not have been better to go king to h2 at 4:19

  • Ive only recently found your videos and I have to say, I think theyre great. I really enjoy learning from them & will soon be checking out your website. Your efforts are really appreciated.

  • Ive only recently found your videos and I have to say, I think theyre great. I really enjoy learning from them & will soon be checking out your website. Your efforts are really appreciated.

  • Thanks for checking it out M!

  • dont learn any first. just play chess. learn to develope your pieces and to continue developing everything throughout the game

  • Great Video, Jrobi. I have a question for you. What do you suggest to learn first - endgames, middlegames, or the openings?

  • @StratChess I'd learn the openings lol. If you don't have a good start you're probably not going to make the middle game and definitely not going to make the endgame ;)

  • I recommend learning all at the same time. A lot of grandmasters recommend studying all aspects of the game in certain amounts. Check my website for a summary of what I was able to find about this question right on the main page. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • you're right about learning all at the same time. but i think in the beginning we should focus on endgame. rather than learning openings, which is just memorisation, focus on learning principles. a lot of the time, your endgame considerations must affect your opening and middlegame play (pawn structure considerations especially). but that's just me.

  • i always offer draw at endgame and if he says no i usually loses. Hope your videos have helped me. I want the program that helped u created this chess video. where u get it? or secret?

  • when the king came down to B5 move the pawn up to A4 if he takes then march up your C pawn

  • Yes that would look good at first sight considering your opponent is foolish enough 2 take either A or B pawn but if he plays Kc6 ur lost .....ur best move would be a5 and he would play a6 and it's a draw there is nothing neither player can do without losing

  • "Firm believer of fighting it out till the end" thats real chess spirit!

  • Why did you back your king up from g3 to g2 at 4:00?

  • At 6:54 couldn't he just move up the "A" pawn because the black king couldnt take or else the other pawn will promote

  • Every time you said 'The Kind eats up all the pawns' I couldn't help but add munching sound effects XD. Great video as usual!

  • hehe thanks for checking it out! =)

  • I completely agreed with you, it is not a wise decision to resign only because your a little behind mateial than your opponent, if the opponent makes 1 small mistake it can turn everything.

  • Nice video, Jrobi! :)

  • lol

Even I would have won this as black.^^ But ye, I also play things like this to the end.

  • Thnx for the video; im a firm beleiver in playing until the end, and making your oponent earn the win. I thought I was the only one out here that beleived that

  • Hi jrobi,

in 11:09 your opponent made his final mistake while taking your queen on g3. Ke2 is a draw.

    Ke2, Qxe3+ Kxe3, b5 Kf3, b6 g4+, Kh4 g3, b7 g2, b8Q g1Q

  • I think you're right. I considered 1. ... Ke2 2. Kg4, but that's still a draw with 2. ... Qe4+ 3. Kh5 Qxb4 4. Kxg5 1/2-1/2.

    Alternatively, 1. Ke2 2. Kg2 or h2 Qd2+ 3. Kany Qxb4 4. Qxg5 1/2-1/2.

White's only other legal moves are Qf3 which obviously loses immediately and the queen trade which you described.

  • At 6:30 it was a pretty straight forward draw

  • I'm big about endgames myself. Even if there are still materials on the board, like bishops and horses, I try to position my king so that I'm closer to either my pawns or the opponents which ever have the advantage, and thats when I start to trade in pieces preparing for the endgame!

tnx for the vid I'm always a fan

  • I'm the exact same way, and so are a majority of the (admittedly very few) people I've played. As a result, I lost two games I really really should not have, but even better with only a king left against a small army I managed to force a stalemate against a person I have no recollection of ever beating.

  • Good call Jrobi. I think lower ranked players should definitely play on when the material difference is low, like under a piece. Mistakes happen all the time.

  • hmm..well...maybe you can't play Kf4 there b/c of ...g5! +

  • i feel like after black pushes to h5, Kf4 would be a very solid move instead of c4 since he can't play ...h4 to try to promote the pawn (Kxg4) and his King is simply too far back to defend all of his pawns on the Kingside. After you get rid of a few pawns on his Kingside, then you can crush his queenside pawns with your queenside majority.

  • my opinion is you never win a game by resigning.. so fight to the bitter end or unless a forced mate is obviously coming

  • Totally agree - it's worth playing it out just to see how things go and try to plan both sides. And you never know ... people do make mistakes and a losing position can suddenly become a winning one.

  • The intro to your videos with the music just keeps getting cooler and cooler :)

    Great chess videos. 5/5

  • Thanks David!

  • nice explication 5/5

  • Thanks for watching and rating yes4me!

  • i have a question when you moved your pawn to a3 why didnt you move your king to h4 then you could of had the advantage of delaying his pawn to promotion then next tun if he tried to go king to king to c4 you could push the pawn up to protect it then he would have a disadvantage

  • I wanted the pawn to protect B4 from the enemy pawn on A7. The king could never take the pawn on B4 anyway, but I wanted to make sure that there was always a pawn protecting from the enemy A pawn capture. H4 wouldn't accomplish this as after G6 or G5 my king would have to go back to G3 anyway. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • good video!

  • Thanks!

  • Nice 5 stars!

  • Thanks for checking it out xm3s0sleepyx!

  • you make me laugh.. for some reason i could stop laughing when i saw it. something about it just made me keep laughing. good job :)

  • good video! very educating

  • Thanks temporalischess!

  • AWESOME VIDEO!!!

There were some better moves you could have done that you didn't mention, but after all it's blitz. Good video!

  • Thanks Speed! Feel free to post any improvements, I like going through it even after the fact.

  • thx good vid.,

  • Thanks crazyarmen!

  • I'm curious about the computer companion you are using for analysis. At 3:43 you comment that there are "really no variations" between your play and your computer analysis. However, Ruffian regards your 4.c5 as a serious error, losing at least one point in analysis, and your move immediately after the comment, 7.a3, as even worse. I don't mean to get into an analysis war, but I am curious about the program that regarded the 4.c5 move as best, or at least equal, play at that point. Thanks!

  • Rybka 3 with Aquarium.

  • nice vid jrobi! for advice fro beginers who dont know wining positions and when u arre about to lose, never resign! im an expirenced player, and ive only resigned once, but that was when my opponent had queen rook and bishop vs 2 rooks... i was traped and would lose a rook, so i resigned... Always force your opponent to earn the win! finally... if it is queen and king vs king, keep playing! i did that and my opponent stalemated me!

  • Thanks for posting your experience SC. I have stalemated opponents in that position as well, although I don't tend to face it much anymore. But when I first started out I had a number of stalemate saves, which is always a welcome thing when crushed in material count. =)

  • You make a really good point in this video. Losing is just as good, if not even better, in terms of learning when playing the game. Some of my best games have involved losing to some very creative players.

  • Excellent comment kemelex - I totally agree!

  • Awesome video, as always! Thanks!

  • Thanks for checking it out speedbumphu!

  • I like the way your think... A very rational and calculated approach to things.

Gives one an idea of what should be on ones mind.

  • Thanks for the comment Amed!

  • what if you moved your king to h4 after the queen trade?

  • do you play on yahoo? if so do you like it?

  • FICS server - I have a video on my channel on how to get setup on it if you're interested.

  • Nice comeback man

  • Thanks fzvibe!

  • what about king to f4 instead of pawn to c4 at 2:35

  • he could just check with the g7 pawn then i guess

  • nice game. love watching ur games. they teach me a lot

  • Glad to hear that yamizain! Thanks for the feedback!

  • mistake was bringing the king down at begining. if you left it near the 1st doubled pawn you win outright or draw, but yes gg he missed the win

  • Nice win!

  • Thanks!

  • This game shows the importance of studying the fundamentals of king pawn endgames, and thematic pawn sacrifices to force a win. With the right pawn push black would have won easily. However, jrobi was on familiar ground, and his opponent clearly was not. Nice video!

  • Thanks for the comment and checking it out isayoldchap1!

  • sweeeeeeeet

  • Idk, your position dosent look so bad, you have a passed pawn thats on an open file. It looks pretty =

  • i know a lot of people hate me because i never resign when playing... even if i'm in a completely dead position... reason being i don't want to hand them the game in a silver platter...

  • I tend to be similar when playing. I only resign when my position is dead (in other words nothing could be done and the winning moves from my opponent are obvious). Any endgame practice that I can get versus real people is worth it in my opinion, even if I just end up predicting their moves towards victory.

  • Very informative video.

  • Thanks recchi51!

  • you are right dude.. but in this position you can make a forced error so its worth it in this situation.

  • Thanks for checking it out badmofker!

  • well the king can simply come back to c6 and J would have weaken his pawn structure and waste a move because he can't march any pawn.

  • Sweet! thanks! that so answered my question on when to resign! haha thanks!!!!

    Awesome vid as always!

  • Thanks DriftStallion!

  • At the start of the video, when your opponent moved his Queen to g4, what would be different if he moved his queen to g5 instead?

    Awesome videos btw. =)

    ~ Zao

  • Instead of moving your King to g4, I think you should have advanced your Pawn to a4 in order to prevent Black's King from approaching your Pawn structure or aiding his Pawn. Anyways, you played great!

  • Well played Jay never say die

  • Thanks Bruce!

  • You got lucky this time

I hate when i can win a game but i take the long way or lose the game because i made the Wrong move

  • He/she definitely missed the winning move that's for sure. Thanks for checking out the vid Thunder!

  • Good Game !

  • Thanks!

  • your new series is awesome, gives a lot of great insight

  • Thanks Lxavius!

  • Very nice video ! But I think your position wasn't that lost from the beginning, since instead of playing c4 after the trade of queens, you should have played Kf4. Blacks can't defend e4, and his h5 pawn isn't going anywhere cause your king will always be in the square. With no e4 pawn anymore, there is no e & h pawns marching up risk afterwards.

And on the other hand, there is no hurry for you to march your c & d pawns, since a king alone can't stop 2 linked pawns.

  • No, he would have had to play Kg3 first and then Kf4. But in the meantime black could have played h5, so that white could never reach the e-pawn without allowing black's h-pawn to march trough.

  • No man. INSTEAD of c4, play Kf4, threatenning to capture e4. Black can NOT push h4 right away, or else white simply takes on g4.

Actually, e4 can't be taken because of g5!, which would restrain the king out of the defensive square. But if the king remains on f4, it assumes a good defensive position about this e&h simultaneous push.

  • OK, maybe I wasn't precise. If he plays Kf4 insted of c4 black can play g5+ anyway. Now if white captures on e4 there's h4 and the pawn is unstoppable. If white captures on g5, black can advance either the e or the g pawn and one of them will advance.. That leaves only the retreat Kg3 with white still having a lost position.

  • Nobody ever improved their position by resigning :)

  • Excellent statement mediteight!

  • It's stuck with me from somewhere - think it might come from Steinitz.

Thanks btw for all the many interesting videos - look forward to them!

  • Jrobi: Can u clarify ur statement on 10:42 of the game that placing a check by ur Qb7 would have been a drawn position. I dont see how ur opponent could have drawn this game. I greatly appreciate what you do for Chess game lovers. Great vid again and thanks for encouraging us to play end games till the nail biting finish as this one. Excellent.

  • It's a lengthy list of moves but basically with careful play from black there will be one queen left on both side and a king, so it will be drawn unless someone makes a big mistake. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • What was the time limit played and what where the ratings of both of u guys?

  • this gave me hope!

  • Glad to hear it Z!

  • You made a mistake when you assumed you wouldn't be in check when black promoted. He could've promoted to a knight. Not sure if it would've helped in the long run, but it was an option. Also black should've played g3 at 4:35 a move earlier than you suggested. And what about a4+ at 7:00?

  • My opponent definitely could have tried promoting with a knight, but it wouldn't have helped in the position. A4+ unfortunately leads to the same options of either losing the queen right away or the G pawn with check (providing white plays the best move Qf5+).

  • Nice video. Good job Jrobi.

  • Thanks!

  • hey jrobi nice tip at the begining

  • Thanks familyguy!

  • YEAH, i picked the same line at g3 i fill like a total genius for being able to see that! great videos keep'em coming. your videos have really helped my game so thanks.

  • Good catch nebulous87!

  • Great video as usual, it was a very interesting watch. My guess when you suggested to pause, was to bring the a5 pawn down right away, and slowly take the pawns out while not letting one run away. Though, that seems impossible...so the answer was definitely where you directed. I wouldn't have seen it at all, thanks for the show ^_^.

  • Thanks for checking it out Samurai!

  • does anyone know any good chess books?

  • youre a freakin genius!

  • hehe thanks cadrizzay - I don't think so but working towards getting better. =)

  • Good to see you win a lost position! Keep up the great videos!

  • Thanks for checking it out Clearerer!

  • 6:55 a3 should have moved up.

  • true

  • That would have been a good move as well. Seems to create a drawn position. Thanks for sharing!

  • Very good video, jrobi!

  • Thanks Mrius86!

  • im somewhat new to the game, these videos have greatly improved my game and interest of chess thanks and keep posting buddy!

  • Glad to hear that saylasso! Keep me posted on how things go and thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Awesome job Jrobi,

recently in 1 of my games at my league I was ahead in position, first time playing budapest ^_^ but I made a blunder and it resulted in me losing a rook for free, however I stuck through and tried to make a comeback, however I was unsuccessful and eventually lost, but this video is very motivating to any chess player who regrets resigning. Many mistakes can be made in the endgame and those who fail to study engame will not win as many games and have as much fun in chess. Thx

  • Great comment Sheen! Thanks for sharing the story and giving the feedback!

  • Nice video, keep up the good work!

  • Thanks!

  • great video what o you use to make these videos?

  • Thanks JK - I use Aquarium w/Rybka 3. I have a video on my channel on it if you're interested. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • great video again, i love watching! keep up the good work.

  • Thanks ivivkvv!

  • lol. "enemy king is going to munch up all my pawns".

    Another great video.

  • hehe thanks for checking it out lemonycheese!

  • shouldnt you have moved your king to F4 at 2:35 instead of pawn to c4?

  • Black's H pawn and easily queen, if the white king captures the E pawn.

  • Yeah trying to take the pawn there isn't a good move for a number of reasons. My opponent could play an immediate G5 and if I take the E pawn is devastating. If I try to retreat, then the black king activates before the C4 push taking away my options to create the formation on the queen side that was one of my only good options in the position.

  • I like your new series

  • Thanks!
