yeah but bmw's are some of the best handling cars in the world, i guarantee if this raced something that weighed below 3000 pounds and it was stock it'd still beat it

Yes, but for its size, the 1-series is heavier than average. Typically cars of this size are still below 3000 pounds.

safety... you have to remember that this convertible have to have its chassis strengthen and something that pops up when it rolls over. it adds up alot of weight

They are heavy because of all of the safety requirements. This is also why fuel economy hasn't improved much in the past 50 years, we are hauling around heavy cars. With that being said, I would much rather have safety than fuel economy or performance.
