@Maxxarcade Maxxarcade, I know you made this video 2 years back, but do you think the same CPU with only 768MB of DDR1 RAM and a FX5500 video card would be able to run Windows 7 (just for internet browsing, not so much Youtube or games).
congrats, that probably saved you $100's, im using a netbook windows 7 starter with aero anonymously (i spells horrible) enabled with a program, for over $400
Hey I got the same mobo as you got same exact machine.. win7 installed.. with an ati 3850 card which requires a molex connector.. now whenever I move any windows on screen.. cpu usage goes rising high.. any clues why this happens? It's a barton 2500Mhz. thanks so much, nice vids you post by the way.
Lol i have windows 7 on a amd duron 1300+ 512mb ram with 166mhz speed. 40 gb hardrive and a geforce mx 440 also a note i have on board sound via kt 400 chipset (the main bord is a QDI kodux 7x 400a. Google it if you like. And runs fine little bit slow but i dont care. Everything works great afther the start up fast (well fast) you know what i mean. :D
I just put windows 7 on a older computer, but all the drivers did not lode like the internet wifi and sound and dvd drivers . i was running xp and upgraded to 7 but I can't find the drivers for it can you please help me! thanks
When i see people who are good with computers able to do cool things like this, its times like this when i wish i was good and knowledgable with everything to do with computers and how to fix/modify them. Ah well, maybe in the next life ;)
Athlon XP? Not so bad. My old desktop was an Athlon XP 1.8 GHz with 1 GB RAM and Windows Vista. It ran fine, then I recognized my cheap power supply destroyed it.
I tried running Windows 7 Beta 7000 on an old Celeron Dell OptiPlex GX60(Before had Windows 2000&Windows ME(Dual Boot)) and it works! It also had aero because I changed The Motherboard. It had a 320GB Maxtor hard drive. But the 30-Day Trial Expired :( so I had Windows XP Professional SP2 on that Thing. The OptiPlex GX60 sadly passed away on June 12 2010.
I'm running windows 7 on my eight year old computer (Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 2 GB Ram, 512 nvidia 7600 video card). I get a performance rating of 3.6...not too bad. Windows seems to start right up, and I can run my programs with no issues. I ahve to admit though, I am shopping for a new computer so i can run Flight Sim X and fancy scenery.
@mikefly562 I have a couple systems similar to those specs. If it wasn't for everything moving toward Dual Core and up, they would still be pretty capable machines. Especially the later ones with PCI Express. I'd have kept using that Dimension 5100 for a long time, had it been upgradeable to dual core.
@Maxxarcade I have an amd 4000+ 2.4 ghz, 2 gb ddr 400 ram, dual nvidia 7600s 512mb in SLI. I get a performance rating of 4.6. This was my gaming system, but I still use it for internet, movies, and older games. I pretty much gave up on computers for gaming purposes, because I spent a lot of money on this computer long ago, and am very disapointed how fast it became obsolete. I went with a PS3 for my gaming purposes.
@XxWindShadoWxX they never did. I bought a 2500+(oc to 3200+), 768 MB Dual Channel DDR 400 CL2 (which is pricewise a huge difference), GF 5950 Ultra, Asus N87X Deluxe Rev. 2.0, 420W Levicom PSU, Artic Cooling Cooper Silent 2 TC, Gaming Case, 2x80GB SATA Raid, Leadtek TV card, windows xp, 17" LG Flatron screen.. best of the best all together for 1300€ if you'd have the standard 512 MB of RAM and a cheap model, and a single simple IDE drive, no tv card.. it would be much cheaper
Great video maxxarcade. I will definitely agree that W7 is very good on old hardware. Infact even Vista was not too bad on old hardware. I have a video done a while back of a dual PIII 650Mhz system running Vista and it wasnt actually too bad either.
What is your oldest system? Also do you find that sometimes you have some kind of attachment to old hardware? I do...sort of in the same way that I am attached to some of my older vintage home audio equipment :)
@svtcontour I still have the Compaq 486 that was our first family computer, as well as several systems that me and my friends grew up with. I do get attached to some of the stuff, yes.
I'll never forget the thrill of my first sound card, SVGA monitor, modem, or other upgrades that I had to work for when I was a kid. I started out on second hand stuff. The first was an Apple II+, then an original IBM PC with the 8088 CPU and no hard drive. I could go on forever talking about it.
Windows 7 is slow on my old test system XD aero is so laggy i may as well use powerpoint XD. Penitum 4 2.4ghz, 1.75gig ram and a fx5500 D:. But what do i expect from a pentium 4 northwood XD.
@TheDataZoo I installed it on a friend's Dell Dimension that had a 2.8 P4, 2GB RAM and a Geforce 6200. It ran like a new computer LOL.
I just found another Dell in the trash today, it's an Optiplex GX270 with a 3.2Ghz P4. I found enough RAM laying around to get 2GB DDR400 Dual Channel installed, and a Geforce 7600 GS. I wonder how Win7 would run on it. I'm, too lazy to try though. In fact I'm re-installing XP Pro on it right now, since the COA sticker is still on the case.
@MixerVM No, this particular system belonged to a friend of mine. My first Athlon was based on an Asus A7V motherboard. I still have it stored at work somewhere, in a beat up full-tower case.
Nforce chipset drivers are installed you windows7 automatically?
Where you got the nforce drivers? What version are they? I have a asus a7n8x-del and does not work the audio mixer and I have problems with other motherboard-drivers.
Windows update does not have any drivers for nforce2.
@chuzo92 I've never had any problems with this Abit nForce-2 board. You probably won't be able to use the old mixer program, but the audio should work fine with the built in drivers.
@funandthegamemaster Not sure, but I think it was ctrl+windows key+tab or scroll wheel. Something along those lines. Since my main PC has an older keyboard without the Windows key, I don't normally do that :-)
@applefan132 Cool, I really like the later Athlon XP's with the Barton core. They can keep up with a lot of newer systems for casual use most of the time. Especially with lots of RAM, a fast hard drive, and a good video card.
@davindersz I didn't. It was just a test install that expired in 30 days. The computer has since been retired, though it is still a nice backup system with XP.
@MechaNintendoMast Not really, I never activated it before I stopped using it. And even if your computer stops working and requires a new motherboard, you just need to call MS for a new code.
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 with 3GB of ram and 250GBHarddrive, and it has a rating of 3.4, as well, running Windows 7 Ultimate >.> My PC sucks i'm guessing? I've had it for about a year.
my brother needed a computer so a friend gave him a custom 7 year old computer and i also installed windows 7 32 bit and it runs smooth. My little bro is happy untill he has enough money to get a pc ..... But like u said certain drivers you do need to download manually.
beleive this or not i had windows 7 home premium working on my first computer a windows 95 that i got in 1996 and it works the aero works but i had to use a external hard drive to install on because the one that came with my 95 computer was 70 mb lol
@Markcy1989 Could be. The FX5950 Ultra is much faster than the 6200, despite being a lower DirectX version. Though it also uses a lot more power and gets quite hot.
There are free copies of windows 7 ultimate online! Don't waste your money buying the real thing since there are tutorials online about downloading it.
Do you mean that Aero and transparencies are not working for you at all? Or do you just want to know how the 3D task switcher works? You hold the Windows logo key down and scroll the mouse wheel, or you can use tab if you have no scroll wheel.
The good thing is, you can get those older socket 478 P4's on Ebay for less than $10. If your board supports 533Mhz FSB, you can get a pretty fast chip. I bought a few 2.66Ghz ones for around $9 each a while back.
Very true. In fact, my PC is a heavily modified HP D530 (CPU is a Pentium 4 at 2.66GHz) (it's in a standard tower case, with a 550W psu, 200GiB IDE hard drives (2x40GiB and 1x120GiB) running Ubuntu 9.10.
GPU is a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4650 (AGP) w/1GiB DDR2 RAM (sic)
It runs two CRT monitors, both at 1600x1200 (one at 85Hz and the other at 75Hz), plays HD video fine, runs compiz great and Windows 7 gives it a performance rating of 6.3
The best bit : it cost me less than $120 to build it!
Hey I'm not really like a computer whiz or anything but my computer has 2G RAM with a 4.0 Base Score in the Performance Information and Tools Menu running on vista. Do you think it would improve if I got Windows 7?
I would say it's faster than Vista on any system really. It is much more efficient with memory and CPU use.
You can get the OEM version from places like Newegg fairly cheap. Just figure out if you have a 32 or 64 bit CPU, and get the proper version to suit your needs.
haha mine is 7 years old with a p4 1.8Ghz 1 gig of ddr, geforce 9400gt with 1gb of ddr2, a 450watt psu and a 30 gig IDE Hard drive and i run windows aero my WEI is a 1.0!
That's actually a newer system than what I showed here. Athlon 64 is way faster than an Athlon XP. If you had a bigger video card, you could do quite a bit with that.
i have an old duel core, 1 gig ddr2 ram, 160 gig hd and an old grafix card. motherbored is an asus am2 or something
windows 7 ultra runs perfect at 64 bit even, except that there are no drivers for the grafix. once i get a new card and some more sheep, i'm upgrading that for good
Faster than my athlon xp 2200+ :)

@davindersz I didn't. It was just a test install that expired in 30 days. The computer has since been retired, though it is still a nice backup system with XP.
Maxxarcade 1 year ago
why did you use OEM ?
If that motherboard goes your stuck.
That's a ok chance to take on a new computer but risky on an older one.
MechaNintendoMast 1 year ago
@MechaNintendoMast Not really, I never activated it before I stopped using it. And even if your computer stops working and requires a new motherboard, you just need to call MS for a new code.
Maxxarcade 1 year ago
@Maxxarcade Actually windows 7 requires at least 1ghz CPU a Direct X 9.0 capable GPU and at least 1gb of ram. e.e
So Technically it is capable to run windows 7.
And your a mentally retarded cock sucker. :)
This is you behind your bosses desk at work,

@xXRenaxChanXx Nice observation. Actually, I've run it on 512MB with a 500Mhz CPU. This was just an example of a typical "old" PC.

@Maxxarcade That's not very typical.

Your keyboard is too old!
jason24568 1 year ago
@jason24568 It works great though, especially for what I use it for. The keyboard on my main PC is an even older one, an IBM Model M.
Maxxarcade 1 year ago
@jason24568 A model M is one of the best keyboards you can buy.

The trick is the graphics card???
Markcy1989 1 year ago
@Markcy1989 Could be. The FX5950 Ultra is much faster than the 6200, despite being a lower DirectX version. Though it also uses a lot more power and gets quite hot.
Maxxarcade 1 year ago
@Maxxarcade
For me he gives...
*Processor: 3.1
*Memory RAM: 4.2
*Graphics: 2.8 (more low score)<---------- Why that?? If gives 3.2 for the gaming graphics. O_o
*Gaming graphics: 3.2
*Primary HD: 5.4
Markcy1989 1 year ago
@Maxxarcade Mine got from Windows Experience Ratings! The lowest (3.2) one is for a 3D gaming! Not bad at all!!
jason24568 1 year ago
OMG how do you that? O_o
I've a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz 1mb l2 1GB DDR400 GF6200, and the points on the 7 are 2.8.
You with an Athlon XP 1gbDRR333 and FX5 have 3.4... how how how????? O_o

Good video. I have the same installation disc too, but I have Windows 7 Home Premium. Pretty nice for a old computer. Aero runs pretty nice.

how do you use aero? I have windows 7 ultimate 32bit grfx card is 8400gs
alex14469 2 years ago
Do you mean that Aero and transparencies are not working for you at all? Or do you just want to know how the 3D task switcher works? You hold the Windows logo key down and scroll the mouse wheel, or you can use tab if you have no scroll wheel.
Maxxarcade 2 years ago
its that p4 1.8 Ghz processor that is holding the score down it got a 1.0
ribanez780 2 years ago
The good thing is, you can get those older socket 478 P4's on Ebay for less than $10. If your board supports 533Mhz FSB, you can get a pretty fast chip. I bought a few 2.66Ghz ones for around $9 each a while back.
Maxxarcade 2 years ago
It runs two CRT monitors, both at 1600x1200 (one at 85Hz and the other at 75Hz), plays HD video fine, runs compiz great and Windows 7 gives it a performance rating of 6.3
The best bit : it cost me less than $120 to build it!
classicmacintosh 2 years ago
BTW: it has 2GiB RAM
classicmacintosh 2 years ago
Hey I'm not really like a computer whiz or anything but my computer has 2G RAM with a 4.0 Base Score in the Performance Information and Tools Menu running on vista. Do you think it would improve if I got Windows 7?
Acoontey 2 years ago
I would say it's faster than Vista on any system really. It is much more efficient with memory and CPU use.
You can get the OEM version from places like Newegg fairly cheap. Just figure out if you have a 32 or 64 bit CPU, and get the proper version to suit your needs.
Maxxarcade 2 years ago
I have a 32 Bit
Acoontey 2 years ago
haha mine is 7 years old with a p4 1.8Ghz 1 gig of ddr, geforce 9400gt with 1gb of ddr2, a 450watt psu and a 30 gig IDE Hard drive and i run windows aero my WEI is a 1.0!
ribanez780 2 years ago
Wow, 1.0? What is holding the overall score back? It usually says 1.0 if the benchmark has not been run yet.
Maxxarcade 2 years ago
my old 64 MB S3 vga was 1.0 scoring... lol but worked without aero effects...
chetofobico 2 years ago
Lol I do win 7 on a way more crappy computer than that, and the most embarrassing part is that it is my main computer :''3
It's on an asrock mobo which sucks, an AMD A64 3000+ ( I think) 2ghz processor, a geforce fx5500, a really old IDE harddrive and a 300W PSU :''3
The preformence index is at an impressive 3.0 :'3
mast3rm00se 2 years ago
That's actually a newer system than what I showed here. Athlon 64 is way faster than an Athlon XP. If you had a bigger video card, you could do quite a bit with that.
Asrock is a division of Asus I think.
Maxxarcade 2 years ago
i have an old duel core, 1 gig ddr2 ram, 160 gig hd and an old grafix card. motherbored is an asus am2 or something
windows 7 ultra runs perfect at 64 bit even, except that there are no drivers for the grafix. once i get a new card and some more sheep, i'm upgrading that for good

Even as a Mac guy, I actually was impressed by 7, and how it runs on my PC. So far its been a good stable OS.
