@EncompassedRunner They do see it as killing, but it's no longer forbidden. Islam DID start as a peaceful religion, since Muhammad only had few followers and they couldn't survive a war. Later when he gained power, he passed "Allah's orders" as commands of battle and spread of fear. His followers were surprised, since it contradicted earlier messages, Muhammad replied: Allah is almighty, surely he can change that too.
That's why later Quran scripture overwrites contradicting earlier ones.

To me it makes sense since we kill on a daily basis (Bugs, etc.) as well as God had the Israelites fight kill their enemies time and time again after the Ten Commandments were established. And to your point about "the people of the book", they feel as though both Jews and Christians have "corrupted" the true holy scriptures through the Bible and Torah.
