For all the people that are still debating if this song is romantic, it isn't. Because a song has music that appears to be about something romantic, the lyrics are what make the song not romantic. There's nothing subjective here. It's plain as day of what the intentions of the song is about. Something bad has happened, which equals a sad song.

F.Y.I. The original meaning of romantic wasn't always indicative of 'love' - this song can be romantic in the sense that it's gives you that feeling that makes you it love it so much - doesn't mean being in love though. :]

Sorry to bust everyone's bubble, but this song was written about his friend and former band mate, Joe Beleznay. Sources state that Joe, at the time, suffered mildly with agoraphobia and as such served as the inspiration for this song.

Honestly? I just think Mayer wrote it because he was on tour or traveling and couldn't sleep.

But this was never an argument about the interpretation of the song.

He wrote this song back when he was living in ATL and was unhappy. If you listen to his old concerts and the words to the actual song, he gives explanations. This song is pretty old. Like before he made a studio album old, so that would be prior to 2002. I agree that most music you can interpret anyway you want, but some songs are just blatantly obvious. (Like this one.) :)

Sorry Cheez. I totally disagree with you on that. A song is written from inspiration, from the heart, and life experience, You can't take the meaning of the song and change it to your likeing. This was written from a negative experience.  You can't just magically make it positive, when all intentions were negative.
