I don't understand why you would think his speaking voice is baritonal? It has a very distinctive tenor quality. I agree he doesn't speak with a C.T. dominate sound, but it is still very 'tenorish' in quality.
@jgraif I did listen to the Bonisolli version and it is fantastic. (I know the one you refer to because I read your comments on that video). I prefer Pavarotti's version because I enjoy the brightness of his timbre and his absolute effortless sound in the upper register. You prefer Bonisolli, and that's ok. But this business about who is better than who is so juvenile.
@itonlyhappens you know, you are absolutely correct. all of these singers are wonderful and we only need to sit back and enjoy ALL OF THEM. the interpretation of the human voice is frought with minutia that, in my mind, ultimately obscures the beautiful, individual qualities of all these singers.
I am so glad I was able to see him perform in New Jersey and 2 more times in Baltimore. How fortunate to have lived during his lifetime and be able to see him perform life.
I miss the master. There is not much more to say. I was fortunate to hear Pavarotti and the three tenors during their last appearance together at the old Tiger stadium in Detroit.
I'm from Modena, but I live in Paris....my big satisfaction is that I come from the same city of Big Luciano......he was unique and Italy is reconized all around the world also because of him!!!!
They entered with you just now! Now all past dreams have disappeared. Beautiful dreams I'd cherished, immediately vanished without a trace! But the theft does not wound me deeply, because, in their room they have been replaced by sweet hope! Now you know all about me. Will you tell me who you are? Will you say? Please do tell!
Who am I? I am a poet. What do I do here? I Write. And how do I live? I live in my contented poverty,
as if a grand lord, I squander odes and hymns of love. In my dreams and reveries, I build castles in the air, where in spirit I am a millionaire. Yet sometimes from my safe, all my gems are stolen by two thieves, a pair of lovely eyes

I dont know why oyu admire him so much, I admired him but hold on a sec, he was know for his talented high register but here he is only 41 years old and already transposed che gelida manina down half tone or even less than that. He did not keep his voice that well. Just take a look at his operas from 1978, rigoletto optinal high notes were almost gone, la bome half tone down etc. He was fantastic but not as good though.
He never transposed Che gelida manina down more than half a tone, and the 'only' from your comment is pretty much obsolete, because 51 is past pretty much most singer's prime.
I don't what you are talking about the Rigoletto optional high notes? He took them all except the D in the act II cabaletta which he only sang in one production. He even took the high C# in the Addio duet in his late 50s.
He also sang this aria in key in 1979 and produced the greatest high C on record.
Ya know,I really hate it when people pick apart every little note, every little tone.Just let beauty BE beauty for cry'n out loud! I have that 1979 recording, and when I hear him hit that high C,I
Is no doubt he is one of the best opera singers ever... I really love his voice and sincerelly admire his wonderful technique, for me is always an example to follow... but in this recording he is singing the Aria one tone low... is not a High C, is a High B... but is wonderful anyway. We miss you Luciano...
May be in this aria, but i remember 2 fantastic High C in 1998. Paris concet of 3 tenors (O surdato 'nammurato) e gala al Met in elisir d'amore duet "Venti scudi".
Actually..... he sang a C in the last three tenors concert.... he was in his LATE 60's...... that was in 1998. He also sang Nemorino in the 90's.... as late as 98.... he sang the duet 'Venti scudi' with a C every time.....
You're right it was the 29th but he didn't replace di stefano. That was at Covent Garden in 1963. It was Covent Garden debut not his professional debut that he replaced di stefano. Google it. But, I was wrong about the date.
