Remember kids: if you want a famous piece that includes the low B and C frequently, go with Richard Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra: low C for a minute straight in the opening part, low B at mezzo-forte in "Von der Wissenschaft". Look it up on YouTube!
I think it's pretty cool when he demonstrates how low the notes can go with the stops on the E string after explaining the low notes on violin and cello. As if a low E note on bass isn't enough, note by note he goes all the way down to B... you can hear the kids gasp after he bows it out. That's awesome.
Awesome! I respect classical, and I don't know if you care about jazz players, but it would be cool to see some videos posted from you and Andrew A. Most of the upright bass videos on Youtube are crappy, and I don't play classical (yet), but I'd love to see the "Classical Bass for the Jazz Player" video. Did I mention a left hand technique series would be awesome too?
Hmmh, I didn't know they had mechanical extension to low B (31 hertz). I thought they only had extension to low C (32 hertz), and for low B you would need the 5-string bass. However, to me the idea of a 5-string bass is still better - in a fast-paced song, who has time to use one's left hand to always operate the mechanical stops? This video is very helpful - thank you! The bassist actually knows (all of) "his stuff"!
That is what's known as an Extension" [usually C extension, though there are B extensions]...though it looks like he has the capo'd kind (where the intermediate notes between C and typical E have little mechanical capo stops)
This effecitvely allows you to double (8vb) cello parts w/o a 5th string
They are retrofits, not super cheap though ( in excess of $1K probably after luthier work)
I think is stupid and unfair, like you do, talk bad about foreigners in italians forums, but in those internationals you are not able to say the same ethier for italians or foreigners... why do you behave like this? Answer, but clear!
You're a good teacher :) Very engaging

And I thought my bass was big! Your bass looks like it's pregnant with another double bass inside.

It's really amazing your way of playing.
I think it's incredible how you can be a podcaster and so on. You are a very good journalist on your blog. But yoou are also a
very complete doublebass player. BRAVO.
