Thank you for sharing this video! I had the great privilege to know JJ, back in the early '90s. My first job out of school, at 15, was working at Hands Guitars in Kingston. John used to pop in once a week to do repairs (he set up all my guitars at the time). He was a rare beast in musician circles, always happy to impart wisdom but never patronising (even to an arrogant little snot-nose like me). A lovely bloke, sorely missed.
John was a close friend of my mum, and I was proud to call him a friend too. I found a cassette of his work that I hadn't seen in over 10 years the other day... what a joy it was to listen to again. A legend as both a guitarist and a human being. The world is a better place for having had JJ in it.
@guitbrett. I read somewhere about him having Jesse Fullers Prarie State 12 string. Do yo know anymore info on this and who did the conversion or was it an original? Rare if it was original as i've never heard of a Larson 12 string!
John did some shows with Jesse, but never owned Jesse's guitar. John said that Jesse made lots of modifications to his Prarie State from it's original design. He said Jesse was always experimenting with stuff.
bet that gutiar plays beautifully, i have an old guild 12 from the 70's, beats the hell out of my fender 12 string from the 80's. If i play acoustic i always use my 12 strings, i don't know why, its that huge beautiful sound that i just love. There not difficult to play, it's jsut that you have to have strong and flexible hands to handle 6 more strings.
Lazy guitarists don't play 12-strings - not unless they have someone stringing and tuning it for them. I haven't put strings on mine in just about forever, it's just so tedious - then 2x the stretching and tuning. Oh, but what a glorious thing it is to stroke it with new strings. Hey, I may restring that guitar yet!
@horbergaren its amazing to listen to this.not only does he have such a unique style in 12 string finger picking.. but he fills it with melody too. Ive always wanted to o this. But i hear these guitars are highly priced.
Harmony Stellas are not expensive compared to original Oscar Schmdt Stellas. John is playing a 1970's Harmony Stella made for a trade show. You can find inexpensive Harmony Stellas on Ebay for a few hundred dollars.
@guitbrett ah i see. might look in to it. In the meantime i might go to my local music shop in dublin where i live and buy a 12 string semi. They sound really well plugged in, they are excellent for irish music. "the fureys" used it really well im their song "the old man" and "maggie". Im looking to buy one for when i go to college. They draw a good crowd too.
Another thing to note, especially if trying to play John's style is that he plays a 12 string with 12 frets to the body, not 14 as most new guitars have. He also tunes his guitar to a lower pitch. Either One and a half or two tones down from concert. He then tunes the two low E strings down a further tone. Have a look at my Paul Brett list on YouTube where I have put Ja clip showing Johns tuning.
Thanks for this, John was a brilliant player. Now having listened to it and downloaded the Amazon mp3 I must try to play it!! Do you have tab/tuning for it or do I have to do it all by ear? By the sound of it the guitar is tuned from B rather than E, is that correct? Wish I could find a Stella like that(and afford it) so I guess I,ll make do with what I have.
Looks like a 12-string Classical Guitar (ie Nylon strings) Fantastic sound - I'm buying a 12-string soon. (University student, usual problem with trying to have enough money for anything).
Been playing guitar for years, self taught. Today I received a 12 string I ordered online and realized I don't know how to tune it properly. Considering I've never been taught anything on guitar I don't understand how to tune an octave up with the EADG strings. If someone can help i'd greatly appreciate it!!
Well, since I assume you don't have an electronic tuner (seriously, those things are great), you could always use another instrument such as piano to do the tuning. I guess there's free sites where you can do this online, too.
I'm self-taught too so I can't say exactly how to tune a 12-string but I do know there's most likely enough resources on the subject on the internet. Try googling for it.
@bmills225 tune the top set of strings like a regular guitar. the on the second set, tune the top 4 each an octave lower that the string above it. the bottom 2 pairs are the same tuning. bb and ee same octaves. i hope this makes sense.
@bmills225 'google' 12-string online guitar tuner. The first result I got from a website called 'Get-Tuned' helped me tune mine (by ear). I just bought a 12-string not 2 hours ago.
@smithpoq I love my 12 string that thing is like and orchestra comared to a six. I played 6 string for 30 years and last year I bought a Washburn electric acoustic with built in tuner. after I played that I put my 6 string in its case and sold it. I think the two best I have heard is the Washburn cutaway or the Tekemine cutaway 12 string
@bmills225 You can find a couple of sights right here on you tube just type in how to tune a 12 string remember your top strings are always the higher octave
@bmills225 the easyest thing to do (yet a bit tricky) is to tune the thickest strings at E, A, D, and G, then fret each one at the 12th fret, and thats your octave.
Crisp, clean picking and flawless fretwork .. a great reading .. I enjoyed this enormously. I don't recognise your instrument .. tail-strung 12-strings are rare beasts indeed .. is it an early Framus?
Whoa, this may sound lame but this tune reminded me of the tune they played on the last ep of Friends. When the camera zooms into the peep-hole of the door.
Everything on a guitar takes practice, its the same as a 6-string, just more tension, so build up that fore-arm strength, and keep working on the bar chords.
I use a plastic thumb pick, and steel fingerpicks, well brass on my ring finger.

This song caused me to break out my D12-28, restring it, and spend a couple of hours learning this tune. I am about 90 % now. Not at all. It might take you about 30 seconds to adjust to it, but besides that it's about the same. I have finger picked one like this guy, but with a flat pick it was relatively easy. Sounds amazing up close and personal.
well, i dare to say it's very, almost hyper, harder, a guitar has 6 strings, a 12 string is the double, it's very hard. try ukele or guitar, it's nice.
Once you play a 12 string guitar for a while, and you play a 6 string, the 6 string guitar is quite akward, and sounds flat. I started out playing a 6 string guitar, then switched to a 12 string, and have played 12 strings ever since

its almost the same, you just press 2 strings with 1 finger, you get used pretty easily to it, and they sound awesome!!

Not at all. It might take you about 30 seconds to adjust to it, but besides that it's about the same. I have finger picked one like this guy, but with a flat pick it was relatively easy. Sounds amazing up close and personal.

well, i dare to say it's very, almost hyper, harder, a guitar has 6 strings, a 12 string is the double, it's very hard. try ukele or guitar, it's nice.

well, not really. it's just a slight difference in the feel of it. 2 strings to the one on a six string.

Once you play a 12 string guitar for a while, and you play a 6 string, the 6 string guitar is quite akward, and sounds flat. I started out playing a 6 string guitar, then switched to a 12 string, and have played 12 strings ever since

Wow, he's great. I just started getting into 12-string music, and I haven't seen someone like this yet. Know of any other great players?
