  • awesome video, please could you send me the tab so i could try my luck at it?.. cameron@denovo.co.za

  • Thank you for sharing this video! I had the great privilege to know JJ, back in the early '90s. My first job out of school, at 15, was working at Hands Guitars in Kingston. John used to pop in once a week to do repairs (he set up all my guitars at the time). He was a rare beast in musician circles, always happy to impart wisdom but never patronising (even to an arrogant little snot-nose like me). A lovely bloke, sorely missed.

  • can you send me the tabs pls ?:)) i realy like this

    :D

  • Can you post a link to the Tabs rather than us handing out our email address?

  • hey guys does anyone of you know the tuning?

  • @fm4100 I think it's in a Drop D tuning. DADGBE. You see just the first string change.

  • Mmm mmm Mmm....Delicious playing

  • good song! what's name this song??

  • @johnbutler2121

    Jubillee

  • Wonderful playing.Thats the way a 12-string should sound

  • whenever I'm stoned and I listen to awesome 12-string tunes I eargasm so hard I nearly pass out

  • John was a close friend of my mum, and I was proud to call him a friend too. I found a cassette of his work that I hadn't seen in over 10 years the other day... what a joy it was to listen to again. A legend as both a guitarist and a human being. The world is a better place for having had JJ in it.

  • @guitbrett. I read somewhere about him having Jesse Fullers Prarie State 12 string. Do yo know anymore info on this and who did the conversion or was it an original? Rare if it was original as i've never heard of a Larson 12 string!

  • @MrBlindBart

John did some shows with Jesse, but never owned Jesse's guitar. John said that Jesse made lots of modifications to his Prarie State from it's original design. He said Jesse was always experimenting with stuff.

  • Simply wonderfull

  • tab?

  • Interested in 12 string guitars...I just started a facebook page dedicated to 12 strings and need input from 12 string players.

On face book search for " 12 string guitar fans " and join in.

    Thanks

  • Dedo mastí-----Paráda.. rock on :)

  • love 12 strings :) they just give so much more volume and presence to a song (if it's the write song lol)

  • bet that gutiar plays beautifully, i have an old guild 12 from the 70's, beats the hell out of my fender 12 string from the 80's. If i play acoustic i always use my 12 strings, i don't know why, its that huge beautiful sound that i just love. There not difficult to play, it's jsut that you have to have strong and flexible hands to handle 6 more strings.

  • is it difficult to play with a 12 string guitar?????

  • @wowshamanful not too hard, but near impossible to bend strings for solos!

  • sweet

  • love the concentration, the emotion....

  • One of the best 12 string pickers I ever heard.

  • Lazy guitarists don't play 12-strings - not unless they have someone stringing and tuning it for them. I haven't put strings on mine in just about forever, it's just so tedious - then 2x the stretching and tuning. Oh, but what a glorious thing it is to stroke it with new strings. Hey, I may restring that guitar yet!

  • WOW that is really and i mean really cool. and gd playing at the same time.

  • someday i´ll get one of those

  • that aint 12 string thats 7 o.O

  • @RationalSteely Actualy the 5 other double strings are very thin. I play the 12 string so its kinda different

  • @RationalSteely u just cant see the very thin strings..

  • @RationalSteely no... its 12

  • I'd forgotten how good Velvet Opera were (intermittently). I suppose it's time I trawled the vinyl in the attic again.

Thanks for that - it will keep me going for several months at least.

  • can you send me a link for tab?

  • AWESOME

  • Tab ???????

  • Always a pleasure to listen to Gandalf playing his guitar

  • wow thats great :D

  • big nose! amazing playinf :P good job

  • 12 strings are fabulous. Rory Gallagher really knew his way around one aswell.

  • Amazing!!

  • Good job man!!

  • That was aweasome time to learn it.

  • This is a really beautiful piece.

New obsession = watching John Joyce videos.

  • if i could wish that i would meet the songwriter of any song and be taught the song by him/her in person, it would be this one

  • @horbergaren

Thanks for your kind words. If John were alve today I'm sure he would have showed you how to play his style.

    Paul

  • @guitbrett did you know him?

  • @horbergaren

Yes, John and I played a duo for many years and also in The Velvet Opera. He was a good friend and a great 12 string player.

    Paul

  • @guitbrett yeah i can see that, he was awesome

  • @horbergaren its amazing to listen to this.not only does he have such a unique style in 12 string finger picking.. but he fills it with melody too. Ive always wanted to o this. But i hear these guitars are highly priced.

  • @milkybar100

Harmony Stellas are not expensive compared to original Oscar Schmdt Stellas. John is playing a 1970's Harmony Stella made for a trade show. You can find inexpensive Harmony Stellas on Ebay for a few hundred dollars.

    Paul

  • @guitbrett ah i see. might look in to it. In the meantime i might go to my local music shop in dublin where i live and buy a 12 string semi. They sound really well plugged in, they are excellent for irish music. "the fureys" used it really well im their song "the old man" and "maggie". Im looking to buy one for when i go to college. They draw a good crowd too.

  • @milkybar100

Another thing to note, especially if trying to play John's style is that he plays a 12 string with 12 frets to the body, not 14 as most new guitars have. He also tunes his guitar to a lower pitch. Either One and a half or two tones down from concert. He then tunes the two low E strings down a further tone. Have a look at my Paul Brett list on YouTube where I have put Ja clip showing Johns tuning.

    Paul

  • what is this song called?

  • @diestel123

    "Jubillee"

  • @guitbrett

is it an original song because i can't find it anywhere else.

  • @diestel123 wow read the title

  • hey @GroundedSaugage... fuck you.

  • Thanks for this, John was a brilliant player. Now having listened to it and downloaded the Amazon mp3 I must try to play it!! Do you have tab/tuning for it or do I have to do it all by ear? By the sound of it the guitar is tuned from B rather than E, is that correct? Wish I could find a Stella like that(and afford it) so I guess I,ll make do with what I have.

  • Ha-cha-cha-cha!

  • Great!

  • Looks like a 12-string Classical Guitar (ie Nylon strings) Fantastic sound - I'm buying a 12-string soon. (University student, usual problem with trying to have enough money for anything).

  • They're steel strings, but it has the traditional head that nylon string guitars typically have.

  • @hartleymartin You wont be disapointed By and elctric acoustic 12 with built in tuner it will make your life alot easier

  • This brotha has a potato nose man. Haha. SICK PLAYING THOUGH! What's with his tuning though? not in standard is it?

  • i'm lookin for tabs for this but cant find any, somebody got a link i can get them from?

  • is that a nylon string?

  • Dude. I can't even play a normal 6 string guitar. How on Earth does he do it?! :L

  • there is no big difference. Just that you have 6 double strings. I play my 12 string just as a 6 string. Only thing that is different is the picking.

  • I love the sound of these things!

  • beautiful! He consciously picks the strings that are raised one octave.

does anyone know the tuning? Its hard to figure it out. I think it is dropped D.

  • its drop D, but if you notice his 12-string is slightly smaller. So I can't figure out the tone, I wanna say Drop D, 1.5 steps down

  • it's 2 steps

  • i stand corrected, and yes that sounds perfect.

  • Just: WOW!!

  • Been playing guitar for years, self taught. Today I received a 12 string I ordered online and realized I don't know how to tune it properly. Considering I've never been taught anything on guitar I don't understand how to tune an octave up with the EADG strings. If someone can help i'd greatly appreciate it!!

  • Well, since I assume you don't have an electronic tuner (seriously, those things are great), you could always use another instrument such as piano to do the tuning. I guess there's free sites where you can do this online, too.

I'm self-taught too so I can't say exactly how to tune a 12-string but I do know there's most likely enough resources on the subject on the internet. Try googling for it.

  • @bmills225

check out the Paul Brett videos for 12 string Blues tuning.

  • @bmills225 tune the top set of strings like a regular guitar. the on the second set, tune the top 4 each an octave lower that the string above it. the bottom 2 pairs are the same tuning. bb and ee same octaves. i hope this makes sense.

  • @bmills225 'google' 12-string online guitar tuner. The first result I got from a website called 'Get-Tuned' helped me tune mine (by ear). I just bought a 12-string not 2 hours ago.

  • @smithpoq I love my 12 string that thing is like and orchestra comared to a six. I played 6 string for 30 years and last year I bought a Washburn electric acoustic with built in tuner. after I played that I put my 6 string in its case and sold it. I think the two best I have heard is the Washburn cutaway or the Tekemine cutaway 12 string

  • @bmills225 google

  • @bmills225 You can find a couple of sights right here on you tube just type in how to tune a 12 string remember your top strings are always the higher octave

  • @bmills225 the easyest thing to do (yet a bit tricky) is to tune the thickest strings at E, A, D, and G, then fret each one at the 12th fret, and thats your octave.

  • Yo. I like this :) Mine's not as picky but was all recorded using my beloved 12 string... So I'll post it as a video response!

  • i want to learn to play a 12 string guitar for the hell of it :)

  • Crisp, clean picking and flawless fretwork .. a great reading .. I enjoyed this enormously. I don't recognise your instrument .. tail-strung 12-strings are rare beasts indeed .. is it an early Framus?

  • It's a one off Harmony / Stella 12 string, according to John, it was made for a Trade Show in the 1970's.

    Paul

  • muy bueno tambien tengo una y quiero llegar a este punto

  • GRAZY MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful! Must learn it.

  • Ha! it's a good thing he's a good picker.

  • looks kinda like nixon

  • Over the top!

    Thank you.

  • wow

  • i bet he get some ladies

  • aye :L

  • this song man is from heaven

  • yep, and he's back now, probably playing his guitar right now, he died 2004

  • Wonderful "open hand" technique!.

  • Either that's a relatively thin neck for a 12 string or his fingers are the size of bananas.

  • Great !!

  • hello oh my such a great guitarist ,,,this is beautiful thankyou for sharing ,,Olivia

  • WE ARE NOT WORTHY! WE ARE NOT WORTHY . . .

  • Whoa, this may sound lame but this tune reminded me of the tune they played on the last ep of Friends. When the camera zooms into the peep-hole of the door.

  • It does. That song was Embryonic Journey by Jefferson Airplane.

  • What the.. how do you pick on the 12 string guitar?

    Does it just take practice?

I was playing one today at school

    and well.. it was difficult..

I didn't play that long anyways.

    And nice playing :]

  • Everything on a guitar takes practice, its the same as a 6-string, just more tension, so build up that fore-arm strength, and keep working on the bar chords.

I use a plastic thumb pick, and steel fingerpicks, well brass on my ring finger.

Any decent guitarist practices... i do everyday, for 2-4hours.

  • Does it take practice? Are you an idiot? Of coarse it takes practice!

  • Wow. That is amazing:D

  • that tune actually made my afternoon pleasant

    huh

  • ...And i jizzed in my pants. you make me look like a douche on guitar.

  • wow. sKiLLz

  • very nice sound

  • Can you teach me to play like this?????

  • What a truly fine guitarist!

  • I've just put a short clip on you tube with John's dropped D tuning which may be of help.

  • I love 12-string guitars. But they can be a real bitch to tune.

  • John used to play with all strings tuned down either a tone - tone and a half or sometimed 2 tones down from concert.

THEN he dropped the bottom Eoctave strings down another tone.

  • This song caused me to break out my D12-28, restring it, and spend a couple of hours learning this tune. I am about 90 % now. It is a lot of fun to play and it has that rare quality of a tune that you don't tire of it. My question is, is there any more video of John playing? I am sad to know he has passed on. Thanks for this video!

  • I will have a look to see if I have anything else I can share of John's work. He was also a great Blues vocalist and there may be a song I can find. Keep looking at the site.

    Paul

  • Great. It is hard to believe he is not better covered, recording wise. It reminds me that I should record more of my music so at least my children will remember what I played... I look forward to more John Joyce when you find it.

  • I've just put a short clip on you tube with John's dropped D tuning which may be of help

  • How is it listed? I looked under John Joyce...

  • if you compare this to a six string a six sounds so.... boring xD

  • It is standard tuning but tuned down from pitch with the bass E strings dropped to D.

  • I keep coming again and again to this tune after surfing through youtube.. He really had some skills :)

    RIP John.

  • I just got a twelve string but i dont sound nearly as good as him

  • Hey ho all you 12vees, John was a good friend and set up all my Guitars and more it's great to hear ya'll seeing his work I haven't propperly learned this track yet but Paul Brett will teach you...X X James & Sue

  • dear john,

    i absolutely love your playing.

too bad your not a neighbor of mine that sits on his porch evenings and just plays.

i guess i would come over once in a while with a six pack and just enjoy listening.

  • magic-why doesn't my guitar sound like that?

    Some talent might help.

  • God bless those who can play the 12 strings gtr because I wont & cant,,

  • I consider playing a 12 string guitar. Is it hard to play compared with a regular guitar?

  • its almost the same, you just press 2 strings with 1 finger, you get used pretty easily to it, and they sound awesome!!

  • Not at all. It might take you about 30 seconds to adjust to it, but besides that it's about the same. I have finger picked one like this guy, but with a flat pick it was relatively easy. Sounds amazing up close and personal.

  • well, i dare to say it's very, almost hyper, harder, a guitar has 6 strings, a 12 string is the double, it's very hard. try ukele or guitar, it's nice.

  • well, not really. it's just a slight difference in the feel of it. 2 strings to the one on a six string.

  • Once you play a 12 string guitar for a while, and you play a 6 string, the 6 string guitar is quite akward, and sounds flat. I started out playing a 6 string guitar, then switched to a 12 string, and have played 12 strings ever since

  • does anyone know what his tuning is?

  • Wow, he's great. I just started getting into 12-string music, and I haven't seen someone like this yet. Know of any other great players?

  • My Favorite on the 12-string Guitar is Leo Kottke!
