I have thousands of primary documents from Nazi archives which illustrate this. In addition to the Einsatzgruppen, the SS deployed 23 battalions of 'order-police' with 420 officers and over 11000 men. Their primary gaol was to maintain order in rural areas. They had a vital role in the liquidation of Jews and the Polish intelligenstia.

The forms of executions adminstrated by the Einsatzgruppen in towns and villages were deemed inefficient and a psychological burden for the soldiers committing the acts. This would lead to the orchestrating of more efficient ways of killing. By December 1941 the first official extermination of camp for Jews was constructed in Chelmno.
