  • Indeed a great and fair mind. I am an avid scientist, and I tend to still believe in SOME greater intelligence. For as stated in the video: Nothing has been stated as what decides where these laws come from and furthermore to assume that we as humans are the pinnacle of conscious possibility is quite arrogant. We have barely discovered how to use a percentage of our brain power. Let alone contemplate what a being with an more advanced consciousness is capable of.

    My "Religion" - Universalism.

  • I must say I actually like this guy compared to the typical theist Im coming to know. Most of them come across as fairly ignorant. Its a nice change of pace to see someone calmly and rationally state their opinion without actually bashing someone. Well done.

  • The leading creationists in this country come across pretty much like he did. Yes, he did a fine job. I too like to read Hawking but do not buy all his ideas.

  • Great video, Lot's of good points...Why doesn't anyone consider that maybe there is no begining and end? Maybe the universe, in one form or another has always been here. I think that the simplest answer is one that humans will never be able to understand.

  • This man talks sense something cannot come from nothing. A universe cannot erupt from nothingness.

  • Atheism was more popular in the 1700's that people would like to admit, for SOME reason. Maybe people take pleasure in the fact that history is all one stright line on a trend toward all things liberal. Such as you hear people talking about the "good old days, when we had morals" but never about the fact that atheism, which WAS "like that" in the 1800's wasn't in the 1700's. This has been going on SINCE than.

  • what you said, plus the fact that the subatomic stuff that is created as a result of smashing protons is the same subatomic stuff that was present one trillionth of a second after the big bang, and that this stuff behaves in the same way as the stuff that resulted, again, one trillionth of a second after the big bang.

i also see the possibility for waste products which hasn't been mentioned, or seemingly planned for.

in my layman's opinion there is still a possibility for great danger here.

  • When Hawking tosses ideas around like that it's pretty much implied that he's speculating.

What's wrong with a scientist making a guess before the data comes in? It's not like he's claiming to know the answer.

Scientists are people too, with imagination, creative inspiration, and dreams just like the rest of us.

I'm sure when it comes time to do the science he buckles down and embraces the scientific method.

I doubt he'd be so highly regarded in that communtity for speculation alone.

  • I don`t believe that the LHC will solve anything about creation and what came before the big bang. This is the big question.

There has to be other forms of intelligent life out there due to the huge number of stars

    that have planets orbiting them.

What i can`t accept is the personal god which is worshipped today.

This baggage of heaven, hell, satan, original sin, the second coming etc., exposes this personal god as a figment of man`s imagination.

  • Good video! I'm an atheist myself, but I must say it's refreshing to see a rational and relatively well-reasoned video by a theist.

    Cheers

  • Most cosmologists believe that the universe was once a singularity that underwent an expansion. They do not claim that the universe came from nothing.

  • I really do not think the Universe was created by a "lawgiver", unless you consider "God" a metaphor for the Universe. I really do not think that God has omniscience or omnipotence or a personality or a son.

  • I agree, the line is blurred. Physics really cannot answer these questions even after the LHC is operational.

  • Excellent

  • P.S. For those who have mentioned Victor Stenger's works, please know that I will be reviewing a few of his books at some time in the near future. His books have become scripture for New Atheism.

  • A Note the the Viewer:

I am fully aware of the arguments that have been posited concerning the "zero energy universe" hypothesis. In fact, I am not even denying the possibility of certain elements of such a hypothesis. Instead, what is being refuted in this video is the utter lack of empiricism which attends the denial of an antecedent Law Giver and First Cause. The creation of the universe is an irreproducible event and resides outside of the domain of empiricism.
