I hate Hitomi for what she did to Sayaka. What kind of a friend would just take someone they knew they loved with all their heart? I feel really bad for Sayaka.
@SenshiNebula She didn't know. Hitomi suspected Sayaka might have feelings for Kyousuke, since the two are childhood friends, but she wasn't sure. That's why Hitomi decides on telling Sayaka what she plans to do with the understanding that Sayaka would confess to Kyousuke first if she does indeed have feelings for him.
Sayaka did nothing, so Hitomi assumed there was nothing between Sayaka and Kyousuke and makes her own confession. It's tragic of course, but it's not really anyone's fault...
Sayaka was the most human of the characters. She strove to become in fact the paragon of virtue that she dreamed of and saw personified in Mami. She wanted the love of a boy and to be a hero. She wanted to be better than herself.
Unfortunately for her, she was human. She wanted to be strong, to be special, to be praised, to be right. She wanted, and that tore at her as she strived to be selfless until she finally broke. She wasn't an idealized character type. She was us.

And that is what makes her fall so heartbreaking.
Because she was so much like us.
