Hi there, this video was instructional. I have been stretching wrong for a month now, and for some reason stretching my inner thighs would really hurt, a deep nasty pain. Could it be because my back would be arched all along ? Also I just tried butterfly stretch keeping my back still, and I actually couldn't, my back would still be slightly arched and I couldn't bend forward at all. Do I have to keep at it anyway ?
I bend my back and do it wrong but i thought thats just how you start off, i thought once you are more flexible, then u can do it with a straight back :/ oterwise i feel i'll never be able to become flexible
Hello, thank you so much for this video, it's very detailed and helpful for my stretching. I do Brazilian Jujitsu, and hip and leg flexability is VERY important, so I've been taklook for the best stretches and fell somewhat in love with Yoga haha I have a bit of an issue though. This back straight pose, in sitting forward bend SUCKS for me, I cannot even sit up straight like that without stretching why??? Looking back I slouched alot of the time. Is it just my back is REALLY inflexable?
Wow, excellent video! I just realized that i've been doing it wrong for a long time. I do martial arts, but when I try to go down in the split my hips won't allow me to go any further than about 90-100 degrees. Thanks to this I now must try to engage my hips more in my stretches - I hope to see some results in the end of the summer at least. Thanks again for the helpful video!
Okay, if your back has a tendency to do this, try raising your upper body up and then lean forward. If you have to, go to a mirror and look at yourself while trying to stretch.if your back starts to arch forward stop and go back and start over. the point of the stretch is to target your muscle and pull on it. not get your upper body down there. Don't worry about how far to go down as long as you feel a burn in the back of your hamstrings.
@neekie5235 you're not alone, I didn't just make this video on a whim, it's the mistakes I've seen in thousands of students just like you. You're not alone, just get back to the mat and get it right from now on!
it almost looks like Kumiko upper and lower body arent joint together in the middle.Thats when you know someone is flexible, when it looks like they are made of rubber.
Im doin these kind of stretchin for kickboxing and i must say for someone my size (1m94, about120kg) im pretty flexible and hope to get better the coming year. Havent been doin it on a regular bases so i cant wait too see how flexible i get when i start doing it on a day to day bases.
Question on Seated Forward Bend and Wide Angle Forward Bend. I can only really bend from the hips by putting my hands on the floor or wall behind me and pushing my torso forward. If I don’t, I loose the forward tilt in my pelvis. Especially with Wide Angle Forward Bend. I can get about as far forward in the Seated Forward Bend as shown in the video. I’m not overweight. Any comments or advice? Does your book cover this?
I do wushu and have been trying to get my back straight like the lady in your video but i think mens backs physically just dont get that straight. i think its our hip structure. when i do leg raises...i can get my toe to my head whilst keeping my back straight, but sitting with my feet in front and stretching forward....i find it very hard to keep my back straight. if i keep it straight....then i would be sitting at a 90 degree angle and not really stretching forward. what do you think?
@afy300 There are differences between male and female hips, but I've seen guys do it with a straight back, so it's not impossible. Very rare though. Will think about this.
wow, that feels way better, I've done a lot of these wrong before, doing them right was humbling but also gave me a way better stretch. thanks for the tips :D
I'm in love with Yoga Garden videos. When can I come visit?! :) Thanks for sharing the great material and analogies! I am always anxious to share with my classes too!
thanks for your video, really helped me find my stretching mistakes. Is it possible to show a video for beginners? how do I reach that level? any use of a strap? which exercise could go first?
This certainly makes a lot of sense. Great video. I realize after all this time I have been stretching incorrectly and getting little results. Mostly due to misinformation and mimicing other people. THANKS FOR POSTING!!!
Very nice video, thank you!

I have great difficulty doing this as my back has a natural tendency to bend during stretches no matter how much i try to do otherwise....any tips?

I actually had two hairs bands whilst sat at my desk. As a visual and touch learner this really helps.
Just realised I'm a cheat though, well a bit of a cheat at least

This is great! Kind of embarrassing though, because when I put my toes back, that's as far as I can go. Hopefully I will get better soon.

If you practice there's no "hopefully" about it, you will get better. It's just physics!
