Everyone knows that Whitney Houston is a mezzo-soprano. Her vocal range extends from G below middle C (G3) to high B-flat (B♭5); she can belt out to treble F (F5).
@ann642 No, at the start of her career, she was a pure soprano. But because of " i want to sound more black" is always in her head, she make her voice sound deeper. She became a mezzo around 1988. And her highest note is C#6 (yes a very nice C#6), she can belt out to a G#5 (actually an A5 but it doesn't count because it's an exclamation), her lowest is C3. There's a video in youtube showing that. Wiki is not always right you know.
Who the hell cares what soprano she is an obviously none of you singers are that great no one has heard of you. I am singer but who cares this woman sang the hell out of the song whether she was a mezzo, high soprano or a damn alto she sounded great.
To kmaur21 & highnote32........Who cares what chest she's using. As long as I get my monies worth when I hear her sing. And this was the old Whitney, so it really doesn't matter. I just wanna hear my DIVA sing the hell out of a song!
No, it was only E5 she does here. She only hit G5/G#5 in it in the studio. The other guy has a habit of inventing notes. People have to correct him, usually. He has to high from smoking too much weed and can't hear the notes right, lol.
OMG!!!!!!!! I can't believe you people are at this again. When are ya gonna learn to jsut leave it alone???????????? Huh? Who cares. What are you guys music teachers or something? Ugh!!!!!!
You see, he's the one that makes up the notes. People have to correct him and It's so sad how they can't hear. You even know what that stuff is anyway?
I'm not making up any notes. What are you talking about ? I'm enjoying what I'm hearing. And anyway, Whitney would be furious if she were reading your comments abut her vocals. Shame on you
If you even know the difference btween Soprano, Mezzo and Alto? It's the high,, medium, low. It really bgoes by Tessitura/Timbre/Tone. You might actually can tell she is a Mezzo, not a Soprano because her sound is a bit too dark but she is also going up but halfway. She is Mezzo. That's all.
Yes I do know the difference between ranges. Hello? I do sing myself. And honsestly I'm like who cares? A good performance is a good performance. It doesn't matter. Refer back to my earlier comments. They're all there.
She was a first soprano in this clip. You have to include head tones and everything in too account. Whitney don't always belt her highest to perserve her voice think about. She toured like crazy in her prime but a soprano like Whitney could easily belt A5 B5 and probably C6's with ease too.
4:41 is F5# not F5 it almost a G5! Love will save the day 5:53 A5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She harmonizing with the background so hard to tell, but the exact same note than studio rendition!
Whitney did not become no mezzo until 1998. What are you talking about? She was still a spinto with coloratura soprano abilities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many agree that whitney became a Mezzo-Soprano. She became a Dramatic Mezzo-Soprano in 1998. Oh, she hit a good F5 at 2:43. She belted F5 in her Morocco concert. She will belt F5 in her album and tour, she'll make sure of it.
She hit a f5# 2:43 and the end was Love will save the day.......A5. Also she hits plenty of amazing high belts Radio City Hall 1993, above the usual f5 g5, especially in Didn't We Almost Have it all............. I would say, it all depends on the condition of her voice. Whitney can sing and do anything she wants if her voice is good condition!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is still the diva all the way. This is a complete different version but she's got that power in her voice still at this point.

@ann642 Whitney Houston might possibly be a Contralto now. Many thought higher notes sounded strained.

The background singers are also singing the song in the major key, not the minor key like the album.
