  • good video 5 ***** stars

  • The coupler was fine. It's just the knukcle that broke. :)

  • The couplers look indestructible!

  • Great train action.

  • Is there a minimum distance that you gotta have between the two sections of train while you replace the knuckles?

  • They should have just dropped the knuckle off and pulled up.

  • Great video, dig your other video on engine coupling. We live in Toledo so we see way to many trains!LOL. I live right next to the CSX main and three diff yards close to us. Rail fan here is about 5 minutes every direction. great video brother

  • thats called a knuckle . thats what broke not the coupler. i change about 10 of thoes a day. and they are around 80lbs. not as heavy as this guy made it look

  • I love how the guy in the orange coat did everything wrong; lifting with his back and kicking the coupler with his foot...

  • Your sound is really good. Do you have special equiptment?

  • @penguingeneral2 None, just a built in mic.

  • A RAIL CAR KNUCKLE WIEGHS 84 LBS AND IS CARRIED TO THE CAR TO BE CHANGED,THIS PARTICLAR KNUCKLE IS A F51AE KNUCKLE USED ON A F70DE COUPLER.MOST "F" COUPLERS ARE USED ON ROTARY DUMP CARS LIKE COAL CARS.THE PIN THAT HOLDS THIS KNUCKLE IN PLACE IS CALLED A ZEFTEC PIN AND IS MADE OF PLASTIC.

  • @dtf1973 Those plastic knukle pins are garbage and are not supposed to be used for long term situations.

  • @GEES44DC Why?

  • @BordelDeMerle It's the fastest way of doing it when in the field and there is no one else around. The conductor tells the engineer what type of knuckle to drop off, has the engineer drop said knuckle off, pulls the train up, conductor throws the knuckle on, backs up, recouples ... and away they go.

  • 70 pounds is alot to carry, esp by yourself.....

  • @seankolker Also try carrying it through waist high snow,

  • Its the cold weather that makes the metal brittle. Some French automobile springs also tend to break in cold weather, frequently overnight so in the morning the cars owner cannot get to work.

  • Just like with Kadee's! ;D

  • Poor Vehicle ='(

  • looks like too much draft this is always the problem with knuckles

  • Very awesome video dude!

  • It looks easy just to put the part back to the coupler. No welding needed?

  • @dbdrdbag Even I was surprised! :)

  • @dbdrdbag No, no welding, just a replacment knuckle and a pin. The hardest part is picking up the knuckle. They aren't lite but that ol' boy made it look effortless.

  • @dbdrdbag its a simple pin that drops in with a cotter pin to keep the pin from popping up and out

  • About 2 years ago a BNSF coal was climbing up the north side of Palmer Lake and they popped a coupler climbing out of the sag. They had to repair it and the train BEHIND it had to push the cars up to the hook, then they had to continue on

  • No hard hat for Mr. Sports Fan...Shame!

  • @IMRROcom Umm, yeah.....hard hat not required for Mr. Sports Fan in this incident. He's the cornductor.

  • Excellent footage of this rarely captured reality of the railroad. Great job and so very interesting!
