Ack, I just thought of a major logic problem with a small part of the story: the Ganger Jennifer needed to trick Rory in order to deactivate the thermostatic regulators. Why? Why would the controls be designed to prevent access by a Ganger employee, while allowing a completely unauthorized human stranger to operate them? It's not like they ever had problems with rebellious sentient Gangers before, and the crew basically use the Gangers to perform all their duties. That's weak writing.
I just saw the two-parter for the first time. (I'm a bit late on the DW bandwagon). I really wish Rory had done more to talk to Jennifer. He seemed to be able to relate, but he never explained to her that he knew what it was like to be an almost-person.
so you mentioned the Flesh (but actually not-flesh) doctor getting angry and rough with amy but I'm kinda surprised you didn't say anything about her mentioning that he was going to die…I feel that part is really really overlooked especially the first time watching it…but watching it back and having in mind that he is the real doctor…idk I just gasped…
I may have been the only one who thought about this, but did anybody else realise that because the doctor and "john smith" switched their shoes, flesh amy trusted flesh doctor more than she trusted real doctor; sort of like a "flesh bond".
@PichuandEevee I think the whole point was that Amy (as an example for everyone else) couldn't tell the difference. She only projected her own prejudices.
Wow...I was not expecting the ending to be so suspenseful! I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! How did Amy get there? Or not get there... Poor Rory. And the Doctor what will happen next? I'm very excited to find out about River. Rosianna said she heard a big spoiler about the next episode...I hope I don't get spoiled. LOL I'm just so excited right now! Also wondering if you agreed with what Rosianna brought up, that the value of alien or human life has just sort of...idk the Doctor seems to care less?
It's definitely a better two-parter. The Rebel Flesh was just kind of weird pacing and I didn't feel very engaged with the episode by itself, but I liked The Almost People much more.
@happytheodoreperson We watched the flesh Doctor dissolve at the end of The Almost People. I thought that too at first, but it can't really happen. Then again, Moffatt is synonymous with making the impossible possible.
I actually liked the first part more than the second. I felt there was a sort of missing link in the gangers going from wanting to kill their originals to accepting what they were, and I thought they could've put in more of a moral dilema with one of them still having both of a pair alive at the end, but considering the bombshell that was dropped, I guess it wouldn't have fit. As for flesh Amy... Nobody saw that one coming. I was genuinely shocked.
I agree with you that The Rebel Flesh wasn't the best episode. While I agree that the animation was a little off, isn't that part of the spirit of Doctor Who? Look at the first doctor's final episode. The cybermen in that episode literally turn on a lamp and it Kills people. Look at the special effects of the old series. My view when ever the special effects are off in NuWho is that they are just paying tribute to the past.
I didn't really like series 6 and the end of the almost people was terrible . . . I mean really bad. But I’m not giving up on it yet. . .I mean I've been waiting alone time for the river song episode I hope it does disappoint me and the other fans. :)
I wonder what your opinion is of the current series compared to the early series. I prefer the early series. the characters seem to be more likeable, and the episodes seemed better written.
A lot more than just the new season's are shown in england. There are always repeats of every series since the 9th doctor on at least one channel twice a day, plus repeats of the new episode and 'making of'. It's awesome xD
Did no one else notice how Amy told the Doctor that she has seen him die? (Remember that the Doctor and Flesh Doctor switched shoes from the beginning.)
Maybe he didn't believe her, but she still told him.
Yeah I definitely felt the same way about the end and Rory having full trust in the Doctor to be able to let go of Amy. It was an intense scene, but so good; I must've watched that last bit over at least 3 times.
That's neat that you're moving to London soon, have fun! :]
So looking forward to seeing more of the Doctor and Rory relationship and dynamic- it's usually about the Doctor and Amy or Amy and Rory, so seeing the 2 lads working together should be interesting.
Also, just looking forward to Rory hopefully being more determined and driven now that he has motivation to find Amy. He's always been a little bit weak I think. with only glimpses occasionally of a strong personality
I pretty much agree with everything you said. I was disappointed with the rebel flesh - it seemed like the sort of concept that had the potential to be made quite scary by Moffat, but it wasn't.
It's great that you're studying in England. My plan is to study in America in my second year (I'm starting uni in September) so I'll be interested in your experiences. (Though that doesn't really relate to this channel, sorry)
I know Rory dying a lot ticks a bunch of people off, but there's a theory (WARNING: SPOILERY IF TRUE?) that Rory is technically supposed to be dead (he *was* erased from the Universe) and Amy keeps bringing him back, thus causing the Universe to no longer be balanced. So there's a theory that the reason he keeps almost dying is because he's /supposed/ to be dead, but Amy, who's a sort of Reality Warper, keeps bringing him back. And I think River kills Rory, the best man she ever knew.
Just sayin' I TOTALLY called the Amy deal! Her being flesh, and the real her being pregnant somewhere, held hostage! I was so proud of myself because usually I cannot theorize worth crap.
The sky looks beautiful that you can see through your window at the end of the video. I wasn't a fan of those 2 episodes either and your love for England makes me feel good as hardly anyone appreciates it nowadays.
These purpose of the 2 episodes strongly reminded me of Tennant/Martha and their 2 parter human nature/ the family of blood. In those episodes we learnt how the timelord to human conversion works. Both pairs of episodes tell an individual story that goes on to be vital in understanding the finale.
I like how it was hinted throughout the episodes that the doctor had seen this before. I also like that there are 2 'suprises' instead of one- the doctor/flesh switch and the amy is flesh reveal.
I really dislike the hole pregnant-thing, even thought it's brilliantly done. I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on, but I just don't like the fact of Amy being pregnant. Plus I don't like the idea of getting married --> having children right away.
I loved The Almost People but I agree about the Rebel Flesh. Though I'm confused on one point you made, the hallway scene with Amy&The Doctor, I was under the impression that Amy told the real Doctor about his death (since Flesh Doctor and Real Doctor changed shoes).
I feel like the support for that is at the end. Before they get on the Tardis, the real doctor says to the flesh doctor when the flesh doctor says he is going to die that, "we won't be here for this one" (or something like that).
your moving to london? have you said that on your channel? I feel like thats news?
also agree that reble flesh left something to be desired. I wish they mentioned bad wolf bay in almost people though!! another instance of having two doctors, but maybe thats just because I love 10 so much
I loved these episodes, because to me they were the first real sci-fi episodes in a while. Sci-fi is supposed to make you ask "what if?" and I feel like these episodes did that. What if science found a way you would never have to worry about your loved ones doing dangerous jobs such as mining or factory work? Would you allow it to continue, even if it meant an innocent creature was being tortured? These are the episodes I enjoy seeing in Doctor Who.
Is it me or did the stretchy animation of jennifer in this episode look exactly the same as the animation in the lazarus experiment episode in series 3? I mean there were bits i love but they do keep using the same ideas which is a tad annoying
I really loved what amy said near the end, when she was hugging the 'fake' Doctor and says "I never thought it was possible - you're twice the man I thought you were" :')
I completely agree with you on these episodes working much beter together than as indiviuals; in The Almost People especially I loved the whole mind of a clone vs. mind of theoriginal and their same-ness no matter how hard you tried to alienate the flesh. Mmm, moral quuestioning. <3
I liked them more than you, but felt they tried to cram too much in. I agree that pacing was wrong, I felt locking the door was a good cliffhanger, then it wasn't, so the two Doctors felt weaker. And I think they just crammed too much in the last 10 minutes or so, everything just happened, couldn't really take it all in or process it.
but you know how amy told the flesh doctor that she had seen the real doctors death...she might have actually told the real doctor that since they switched...
Ok when you get to London you MUST go to a Doctor Who Exhibition if they're still on cause I went to one a like 2 years ago or something and it was AWESOME
Hopefully you'll get to see the Doctor Who Experience exhibit while you're in London. so jealous, I wanna get that exclusive Amelia Pond waiting for the doctor action figure they have for sale there. Rebel Flesh by itself was just a set up for The Almost People. Rebel Flesh on it's own definitely is not a stellar episode by any means, but after watching the latest episode I wanna watch both episodes in sequence. the mid-season finale should be insane. supposedly we find out who River Song is?!
I read in the bbc radio times that after the 7th episode there going to stop showing the final five episodes till late august, theres no explanation why, probably just for an amazing cliffhangar, but I am not happy about it.
"The moment with Amy and and the flesh doctor"- not trying to say your wrong or anything- just confused. Wasn't that the real doctor when the shoes were switched? that's how i interperted it when they explained the shoes later, because the 'real' doctor knew about his death. Anyone care to answer that?
@trippelet I was kind of confused about that myself. Since the Doctor's overreaction and shouting "Why?" and scaring Amy seemed out of character. And so was attacking Rory later on. So I couldn't really work out where The Doctor must have switched shoes. It seemed to me like they just added that in at the end to give more depth to the episode, cos the more you think about it, the less sense it seems to make. I just gathered that maybe The Doctor already knew about his death already.
I feel like it didn't, almost, need to be a two parter. But, also, it was also too much info to be just one episode. I wasn't that interested in The Almost People as much as I could of been, and then that ending happened and I was left gaping at my laptop.
I love your review, I feel like you can say what I want to much better.
And I'm jealous of your moving to England. Extremely. Jealous.
Oh my god, I thought the pacing to the Rebel Flesh was WONDERFUL. Frankly, rewatching it, I did not realize the guy who dies died only 5 minutes before the end. It felt like 20.
Umm... don't notice if you you noticed, the doctor that hurt Amy was the Real doctor. At the end the Real Doctor makes a joke about being invited to his own death.
wait... i thought the doctors had switched places. so didn't amy tell the real doctor about his death? oh maybe i got confused... haha. i get confused whenever there are doubles. then i get really paranoid about who's who if if they're really them. then i end up not trusting anybody.
I liked both parts, but I will agree, the send half was much better than the first-- I think if they'd have introduced the Flesh Doctor earlier in the first half it would have improved it overall, made them less uneven.
The first one was just pure tease, that's the problem with the firsts of two parters, the second episode was good, but the last 30 seconds blew it out of the water.
I didn't like how the Doctor was so quick to kill the flesh Amy... I mean, the entire episode was about how the flesh were the exact same as the people. But I don't know what it'd be like if the flesh Amy was still alive, and it'd be hard to show that Amy was flesh Amy without destroying her.
I thought the gangers kinda looked like Voldemort. XD
But, it's great to hear your reaction, 'cause I was wondering why Rory was so much more connected to the Flesh than the others... it all makes sense now!
And, I REALLY hope we find out who River is in the 7th not the 8th episode, because that would be such a horrible cliff hanger! But, there is still gonna be some kind of cliff hanger, which is expected, but STILL. Why?!?!?!
Yeah, I was really confused because of BBC America as well. Took me a day of "where are you tumblr getting all these gifs??" to figure it out. Thankfully, it wasn't spoiled for me beforehand.
@TheOneAndOnlyMaskros They're splitting the series in two, 7 episodes now, which ends this week, and then it comes back for another 6, think August time. Its to bring it closer to the christmas special and make it a more of an all year show. Gonna suck waiting for it to come back on :(
I'm so jelly that you get to go to England! Gonna meet some other Whovians and have a party, one hopes. And yeah, the ending was QUITE stunning. And I wanted to hug Rory.
I agree, I thought The Rebel Flesh was kind of a non-event. However, I really enjoyed The Almost people. I really liked the moment with the Flesh Doctor when The real Doctor told Amy about them swapping shoes. And, the end of the episode was just *mindblown*
I am so psyched for this Saturday, mainly because we finally get to find out more about River Song. 'Twill be pretty sad though.
WHY WHY WHY did you not move sooner.... i am moving out of London with my family to a place that is an hour and a half away in the car!!!! and my parents probubly won't drive me that way to go to any gatherings or anything like that.... *sigh*
i agree with you Kayley that The Almost People was way better than The Rebel Flesh, it just didn't click with me and then the second part just worked better i thought as a single episode :P loved the two doctors and how they bounced off each other and then the reveal at the end that i didn't see coming :) also agreed that the ending was sooooo unexpected, yet so awesome! :D and your coming to London for a year? thats awesome! :D you better be at some gatherings missy! :)
I didn't really enjoy the first episode because it was all VERY predictible.
At the moment they showed the Flesh and the Doctor started looking at it, you could easily see what was gonna happen, and the ending of the first part, that was supposed to be a big cliffhanger, really wasn't.
But I liked the way the Doctor used the shoes to see how Amy would react, even though that too, was a bit predictable.
@k0rb4k Technically, a cliffhanger doesn't have to be surprising; rather, it has to leave you in suspense and wanting to know what happens next. I think you're confusing 'cliffhanger' with 'twist ending'.
I didn't like the rebel flesh that much really, the second part I really liked though and I am looking forward to the cliffhanger and wow I can't believe you're moving to London that's awesome!! (I live about 60 miles away)
My sister pointed out that Amy has been wearing the same clothes the whole series (apart from the suit she wears in that one episode and the pirate get up) and the flesh clones clothes. I like things that are surprises but looking back make sense, rather than just twists for no reason which has happened in some earlier seasons.
I forgot about Rory being not quite human! That's really clever. And when did the Flesh Doctor go through all of the personalities of old Doctors? Did I miss that too?
This is the first time I've disagreed with you! Can't believe you didn't like Rebel Flesh, for me it was the best one of the whole series. It lookd fantastic, it was scary, it captured my attention in a way no other episode has so far, Rory, Amy & The Doctor finally had lines & actions that showed them as individual people instead of always going around together as a group, etc. Thought the second part was also fantastic, because TWO Matt Smiths? Yes please ;)
I found out today that they are retiring the Daleks cause they are the most easily defeated of the all the Doctor's enemies and that is the reason why! I think it sucks! Why, Stephen Moffat?!
It's like Star Trek without Vulcans, Klingons or Romulans!
@denial987 He's not retiring them permanently. He's just giving them a rest for this season, and frankly I think it's a good idea. I LOVE the Daleks, but they've been over-exposed of late. It doesn't help that they're not always written well (properly written Daleks shouldn't be so easy to defeat!), or that they keep being wiped out 'for good' then reappearing, or that the latest redesign wasn't popular. Hopefully, some time away will make audiences grow fonder for them!
I totally agree with you about The Rebel Flesh on its own. The Doctor's line and Rory's reaction were some of the only good bits of the epi. I thought it didn't really go anywhere and was a bit predictable. Like you said, the pacing didn't feel right. As you say words failed me at the end of Almost People! When Amy was like "I'm properly, properly scared" that terrified me. Amy's such a strong character and you never see that. Enjoy London! Looking forward to the next review =) x
I feel that the ending of the two-parter overshadowed the entirity of the episodes a bit too much. It was an amazing climax, but maybe a bit too much to handle.
And I need an experts opinion Kayley. The whole 2 episodes are about how the flesh are people too, that they have feelings, memories etc. And the doctor melts Flesh Amy...whaaat? haha
I thought Karen was particularly great the whole way through this actually, I liked that the dynamic between her and Rory changed a bit because of Jen, that was interesting because it's normally her who gets the attention. great review.
Also, yay you're moving to London, my hometown :)
I didn't like either ep, but the ending of the 2nd part blew my fragile tardistastic mind and as a result I'll be glued to my ... laptop, to watch the next ep on iplayer at a time that is suitable for me
I sort of like the "crappy" animations.. It's cheesy and doctor who is the only show where I can appreciate that.. And the ending.. geez.. I was so blown away .. AWESOME!!!!!
I didn't like the Rebel Flesh either. I was really disappointed with the episode and I almost didn't watch the second part just because I was worried that it would be as bad. it wasn't. I quite liked the second part actually.
I tried so hard to like both episodes. For me, its just one of those few episodes I will only watch again if I have to. However, the ending blew my mind. I am pumped to see what happens next episode.
This two-part episode is reminiscent of Blade Runner.

I'm going to England in fall too, hopefully. Watching Doctor Who there makes me triple-excited for that!

but you know how amy told the flesh doctor that she had seen the real doctors death...she might have actually told the real doctor that since they switched...

Ok when you get to London you MUST go to a Doctor Who Exhibition if they're still on cause I went to one a like 2 years ago or something and it was AWESOME
iluvclawdeenwolf 9 months ago
Well, the pacing was well...more like a classic episode. The story 'taken as a whole' is how it was done for 26 years:)

I was really unenthused by The Rebel Flesh, but the end of Almost People was awesome (as was the whole two Doctors phenomenon)

@werewolfluvr119 It's not THAT great here in England...

Oh man, can't believe you expressed serious concern that maybe Doctor Who's special effects aren't always entirely convincing.
Flinklehurst 9 months ago 48
Hopefully you'll get to see the Doctor Who Experience exhibit while you're in London. so jealous, I wanna get that exclusive Amelia Pond waiting for the doctor action figure they have for sale there. Rebel Flesh by itself was just a set up for The Almost People. Rebel Flesh on it's own definitely is not a stellar episode by any means, but after watching the latest episode I wanna watch both episodes in sequence. the mid-season finale should be insane. supposedly we find out who River Song is?!
leshokkills 9 months ago
I read in the bbc radio times that after the 7th episode there going to stop showing the final five episodes till late august, theres no explanation why, probably just for an amazing cliffhangar, but I am not happy about it.

"The moment with Amy and and the flesh doctor"- not trying to say your wrong or anything- just confused. Wasn't that the real doctor when the shoes were switched? that's how i interperted it when they explained the shoes later, because the 'real' doctor knew about his death. Anyone care to answer that?
trippelet 9 months ago
@trippelet I was kind of confused about that myself. Since the Doctor's overreaction and shouting "Why?" and scaring Amy seemed out of character. And so was attacking Rory later on. So I couldn't really work out where The Doctor must have switched shoes. It seemed to me like they just added that in at the end to give more depth to the episode, cos the more you think about it, the less sense it seems to make. I just gathered that maybe The Doctor already knew about his death already.

Wait, so they ended up showing the almost people in America??? i am confused, and pausing the video so I don't get any spoilers.

• The Flesh is just a generic Auton race.
• Part one had bad lighting and was pretty hard for me to follow. Also, the end was not surprising.
• Part two was so much better. The end was great.
• I am starting to really enjoy Rory!

I just loved hearing the Doctor Say "Would you like a jelly baby" once more ! :)
Pattonfrodo 9 months ago
I feel like it didn't, almost, need to be a two parter. But, also, it was also too much info to be just one episode. I wasn't that interested in The Almost People as much as I could of been, and then that ending happened and I was left gaping at my laptop.
I love your review, I feel like you can say what I want to much better.
And I'm jealous of your moving to England. Extremely. Jealous.
werewolfluvr119 9 months ago
Oh my god, I thought the pacing to the Rebel Flesh was WONDERFUL. Frankly, rewatching it, I did not realize the guy who dies died only 5 minutes before the end. It felt like 20.
someone332 9 months ago
Umm... don't notice if you you noticed, the doctor that hurt Amy was the Real doctor. At the end the Real Doctor makes a joke about being invited to his own death.
HellResident666 9 months ago
wait... i thought the doctors had switched places. so didn't amy tell the real doctor about his death? oh maybe i got confused... haha. i get confused whenever there are doubles. then i get really paranoid about who's who if if they're really them. then i end up not trusting anybody.
aziangr1 9 months ago
I liked both parts, but I will agree, the send half was much better than the first-- I think if they'd have introduced the Flesh Doctor earlier in the first half it would have improved it overall, made them less uneven.

I didn't like how the Doctor was so quick to kill the flesh Amy... I mean, the entire episode was about how the flesh were the exact same as the people. But I don't know what it'd be like if the flesh Amy was still alive, and it'd be hard to show that Amy was flesh Amy without destroying her.
xtimeisfleetingx 9 months ago
I didn't really like "The Rebel Flesh" eithet, but I did like that Rory kind of had his own storyline.
The second half was much better. SO MANY THINGS.
I'm going to be in London for the fall as well, and I'm so excited to be able to watch Doctor Who there.
Did you watch the trailer and prequel to episode 7?

You know what REALLY sucks?! Canada does not have Memorial Day weekend, but we have to deal with America's dumb post-poning the episodes.
So all my European friends will know who River Song is and I'm going to be spoiled and I didn't even get a holiday to make up for it. -.-

@TheOneAndOnlyMaskros They're splitting the series in two, 7 episodes now, which ends this week, and then it comes back for another 6, think August time. Its to bring it closer to the christmas special and make it a more of an all year show. Gonna suck waiting for it to come back on :(

'Twill be pretty sad though.

i agree with you Kayley that The Almost People was way better than The Rebel Flesh, it just didn't click with me and then the second part just worked better i thought as a single episode :P loved the two doctors and how they bounced off each other and then the reveal at the end that i didn't see coming :) also agreed that the ending was sooooo unexpected, yet so awesome! :D and your coming to London for a year? thats awesome! :D you better be at some gatherings missy! :)
TheAssassinsClaw 9 months ago
I didn't really enjoy the first episode because it was all VERY predictible.
At the moment they showed the Flesh and the Doctor started looking at it, you could easily see what was gonna happen, and the ending of the first part, that was supposed to be a big cliffhanger, really wasn't.
But I liked the way the Doctor used the shoes to see how Amy would react, even though that too, was a bit predictable.
k0rb4k 9 months ago
@k0rb4k Technically, a cliffhanger doesn't have to be surprising; rather, it has to leave you in suspense and wanting to know what happens next. I think you're confusing 'cliffhanger' with 'twist ending'.
beardedartisan 9 months ago
I can't believe that there is only one more episode until the Fall season that starts in September....UGH!!!
amber6675 9 months ago
I didn't like the rebel flesh that much really, the second part I really liked though and I am looking forward to the cliffhanger and wow I can't believe you're moving to London that's awesome!! (I live about 60 miles away)
nukemz 9 months ago
My sister pointed out that Amy has been wearing the same clothes the whole series (apart from the suit she wears in that one episode and the pirate get up) and the flesh clones clothes. I like things that are surprises but looking back make sense, rather than just twists for no reason which has happened in some earlier seasons.
frustrationhole 9 months ago

ImADrWhoAddict 9 months ago
I found out today that they are retiring the Daleks cause they are the most easily defeated of the all the Doctor's enemies and that is the reason why! I think it sucks! Why, Stephen Moffat?!
It's like Star Trek without Vulcans, Klingons or Romulans!
denial987 9 months ago
@denial987 He's not retiring them permanently. He's just giving them a rest for this season, and frankly I think it's a good idea. I LOVE the Daleks, but they've been over-exposed of late. It doesn't help that they're not always written well (properly written Daleks shouldn't be so easy to defeat!), or that they keep being wiped out 'for good' then reappearing, or that the latest redesign wasn't popular. Hopefully, some time away will make audiences grow fonder for them!
beardedartisan 9 months ago
@denial987
All he said was that they wouldn't be in this series.
They are being given a rest, not being retired.
Coffeeaddict101 9 months ago
I totally agree with you about The Rebel Flesh on its own. The Doctor's line and Rory's reaction were some of the only good bits of the epi. I thought it didn't really go anywhere and was a bit predictable. Like you said, the pacing didn't feel right. As you say words failed me at the end of Almost People! When Amy was like "I'm properly, properly scared" that terrified me. Amy's such a strong character and you never see that. Enjoy London! Looking forward to the next review =) x
