As Joe Rogan stated, the problem with 99% of BJJ schools is the ability to take down your opponents. That's why many cross-train in Judo & Wrestling. So my question is this: How the heck you can take the fight to the ground (in a self-defense scenario) and proceed with your Jiu-Jitsu if you can't take down in first place???

I've seen BJJ guys "practice" pulling guard on the street using a safe method, kind of worked and didn't at the same time (they ended up hurting their butts, which was kind of funny). Plus, pulling guard does not work in 2v1 situation and against someone who has a weapon (knife, etc)
@pcjudosambo Most of the time in a "street fight" both guys just scrap it out for a bit and at some point you reach a clinched situation. Most times after that, you guys end up tumbling to the ground. There. You're on the ground. Idk where you're fighting dudes, but if there's glass and nails on the ground you should probably run. Same goes for 3, 4, & 5. Actual fighting should be a last resort, unless you have someone with you who won't be able to get away IE the girlfriend.
@willman808 i've been in situations where going to the ground is not an option (against 2 attackers) and I've also been in situations (1vs1) where going to the ground was perfectly safe BUT I took the person to the ground but I only used a simple Judo scarf-hold pin to calm the person (no submissions where applied). But if the person is bigger and stronger than you, it might be hard to take him down, the person might stand and trade blows with you ... but that's not the strategy of a grappler.
@pcjudosambo I think this is a case where mixing fight styles is good. I would say learn at least some basic stand up techniques. enough to where you can disorient someone long enough to take them to the ground and not have to pull guard. someone with no ground game wouldn't know what to do at the bottom of side control or low mount... also for multiple attackers.... like i said get some stand up training. or just dont find yourself in street fight situations anyway....

It all depends on the situation but its always good to have skills standing and on the ground. 1v1, if the other guy doesn't know BJJ or any ground-based style, they usually can't defend a takedown anyway and as they swing fruitlessly, you already have the fight planned and ended in your head.

Umm yes it has! Denny Prokopos has won at least 2 Jiu jitsu no gi nationals and world champion, he also took home the Arnold's. In a current event held in California 10thp took home 20 gold & 7 silver. ha Also lets not forget Eddie Bravo himself choked out Royce Gracie; using the rubberguard twice on him.

I am a judo grappler and in judo the ground grappling (during comps) is much faster and precise VS bjj. In Judo comps you have between 3-15 seconds to secure an arm lock or a choke BUT even in Judo during practice we roll similar to BJJ guys. You need to be a grappler to understand this process.

gracie jiu-jitsu is such a well thought out game, i practice 10th planet, and my instructor is a purple under EB and a purple under relson, he can't stress enough how legit thier (gracies) game is. 10th planet is just icing on the cake.
@ESMER156 10th planet is a great bjj format in itself but i do agree with you having both makes your game ubelievably better i like 10th planet because eddie designed a lot of his moves for a smaller guy fighting a big guy which is really helpful for small people like me it really helps use your size and flexibility to an advantage

@Elm8n pulling guard does not work on the street due to many reasons:
1) harsh floor, if you pull guard, you may damage your back due to concrete/asphalt
2) the floor contains glass, nails, sticks, rocks ... pulling guard is dangerous
3) the guy you pull guard on may be bigger and stronger, thus lifting you up and slamming you down back (Rampage style)
4) what if you're fighting 2 or more guys? Can't pull guard on all of them...
5) The guy on the top might quickly start Ground and pounding you

In Judo comps you have between 3-15 seconds to secure an arm lock or a choke BUT even in Judo during practice we roll similar to BJJ guys. You need to be a grappler to understand this process.

it works exactaly the same, rubber guard is pretty cool with a gi because you can still do color chokes and gi chokes. also, who saw eddie do rubber guard really fast from half guard. look how fast he does it.

Clearly jason knows his 10th planet enough to block and counter moves too... 10th planet just adds extra pages in your book of attacks and possitions.It awlays depends on what your opponent does... when he submit gracie it started from his hand on the mat one of the biggest misstakes when dealing with rubber guard. that was a misstake from gracie and the reason he did Rg.

you know i'm a Rickson Gracie jui-jitsu member but I damn sure use the rubber gaurd so i cant hate. Just cause you like the rubber gaurd doesnt mean you are slighting the gracies in anyway, I like Rickson's stuff for it's shear technique and control, while Eddies is flamboyant and explosive, you mix em up you got a good game

gracie jiu-jitsu is such a well thought out game, i practice 10th planet, and my instructor is a purple under EB and a purple under relson, he can't stress enough how legit thier (gracies) game is. 10th planet is just icing on the cake.

@joebeast15 I believe i saw Royler Gracie use a rubberguard in an ADCC match, Im not entirely sure it was Royler but it was def. a Gracie. But I agree with you, using a rubber guard does not make you anti-gracie JJ. Its just an evolution of the art, just how other things evolve. Of course i cant comment much on BJJ, I'm more of a Sambo guy myself.

At the 2003 Abu Dhabi Eddie Brvo defeats Royler gracie very early on. It was a FLUKE.
Eddie went on to lose. In FACT at 66kg. Eddie didnt even place. Baret Yoshida (whom I have trained with in hawaii) came in second. And at the time Baret was just starting to be good. And Eddie couldn't touch him.

eddie is not famous for being a highly decorated grappler. he says it all the time that he isn't fast, strong, or a super great grappler.

he may have not come up with the "rubber guard" but he created the system today.
