Richey was a rhythm guitarist - nothing more - and if you listen to some live vids on here such as Glastonbury you can here the chords chugging behind James' lead work and actually see the chords he's holding. No he wasnt a great musician but he DID actually play basic chords live and that's all the others needed him to do. . . . musically
He DID start playing live, it was only earlier shows that he wasn't plugged in. There's some guitar parts that James couldn't have been playing, cos Richey was doing lead and James's hands were no where near what Rich was playing, and you can hear him.
This video isn't much, but Richey looks stunning here. And I find it funny that a guy asked him that question. It was rude though. I love you Richey forever. <33
To be in the best band in Wales, with gorgeous guitars like real 70's Fender Thinline Telecasters and Gibson Les Paul Jr's through Marshall JCM stacks, having an amazing guitarist like JDB taking care of business.. you have to admire that he could stand up there and just "be a rockstar."
He was able to play to some degree, as James let him do the opening lead to Moto Emptiness at a gig and powerchords. But deep down he was an artist, and "not playing" only added to his eccentricity.
What's with all the abuse at the 'Richey are you plugged in?' guy? Richey clearly took it as a joke and very well so why are others getting so precious about it? There have been far worse things said about the Manics. At least the guy didn't yell 'There ought to be a union to stop you and your kin then!' afterwards!
I was down the front and said it with a grin and he, rather charmingly, shook his head, mouthed the word "no" and gave a lovely smile back. A very nice moment. I saw the Manics many times over the years, in lots of places (Liverpool, Manchester, Swansea), they were always a brilliant live act. Richey was a very cool individual (as evinced by the moment at the gig) and the Manics really were the best thing to come out of Wales (music wise) since John Cale. And yes, I am Welsh...
A confession: This was a Manics gig in Brighton on 14/03/92 and yes, I was the sad c*nt that shouted to Richey. A few words of explanation though...I was and still am a huge Manics fan. I thought the fact that Richey made a virtue out of not being able to play was fantastic (v.annoying to pious indie types). I loved the fact that he boasted about not playing guitar. I wasn't taking the piss out of his lack of vituosity, just recognising that he thought it was funny himself .
man your kidding...xP anyway richey didnt need to be hendrix, van halen or santana cause he was one of the best lyricists ever...lack of guitar skills get owned by his lyrical skills...FACT...and the manics didnt need another great guitarist, james was a good guitar player...
He is still doing it, quite well actually and i would argue better than before even.
I can't but start to wonder what if Richey would had eventually learned to play guitar, even just slighty and continued to write those amazing lyrics, but sadly all i could do is just entertain the idea, which saddens me even more.
I just thought of something... if he really wasn't, then why would he hold the strings at 0:15 when he takes his hand off of the neck? surely it wouldn't matter if the strings rang if he wasn't plugged in.
i think he had some lessons from James, but sadly he poses more than plays.
once Richey said"Why is everyone hung up on an ugly piece of wood and metal and strings?" and "I can't play guitar very well, but I wanna make the guitar look lethal."
If Richey was solo miming, air guitaring, and laying on the floor... he would still look a billion times cooler and BETTER than the useless cunts that swarm the music limelight today!
One day I will be able to play the guitar aswell as Richey

Guitar skills aside, I think Caitlin Moran said it best when she said "This is beauty beyond lust" about Richey.

ha! If ever there was a man who didn't need to justify himself as a rockstar ...it's Richey Edwards... plugged in or not. :)

He wasn't exactly Eddie Van Halen, but so what? That's what little JDB is for!

He did play, especially towards the end, he was probably just joking about, giving this cunt something to bite on.

nice one well said , what was that TWAT doing there anyway, cheeky fucker talking to Richey like that.
kamilloquai 3 years ago 2
Actually, towards the end, Richie was playing, knocking out some bar chords, and playing along.
If anyone has got the Revol CD2 single, with the glasto 94 live tracks on it, you can hear Richie playing in the backround.
His guitar is also in the mix of "All surface..."on Everthing must go.
