  • dang the crowd explodes immediately

are you listening and taking notes Rock Werchter festival

  • I love how all you can see besides their backdrop is just black. I feel like they're playing in fucking space.

  • wait scratch that i just took a look at the guy haha obviously deantoni haha

  • well if the date is correct then its most likely thomas because he joined the band on halloween night of that year

  • fat strippers for bass amps help dilver that chunky raw sound your looking for too

  • dildos work better for sound quality purposes

  • hahahah

  • it's a condenser mic. like he uses in studio.

  • i like rapid fire tollbooth....better....great FUCKING SOLOS.....

  • Wow... Goliath sounds so much radder. I wonder if it was Thomas' idea to speed it up so much. Wouldn't surprise me. I don't think TMV could've done the first three albums with Thomas, but he was perfect for TBIG and certainly brings a whole new fury to the group.

  • XD.

My first question after hear that it's in fact, the early version of Goliath was:

    "Pridgen playing slow?!?!?!!?! WTF?!?!?"

-BTW... It's in fact, Pridgen?? I can't see clearly...-

So, I think it's very possible that... mmmm... maybe it wasn't his idea, but I think it was HIS fault... XD!

However, I really like so much the song faster! It's a lot of energy, that particular from TMV!

  • i thinks that's not even pridgen. btw

  • Makes Sense... Pridgen playing slow... Naaah...

  • not pridgen, this is deantoni parks. and you can listen to the first few live recordings when they first got TP, he plays the slow version, once the same changes to goliath, thats when it gets sped up, once tbig came out the really sped it up and it only got faster as the tours went on. well, something like that

  • that was in response to the comments a few spots below this ;)

  • No man, he's always played it pretty fast. Check the Catalyst performance in the right sidebar. That was one of Thomas' first shows and it's pretty fast-paced. Actually the one below it, Auckland WAS his first show, and it's also just as fast.

  • love this song. have you realised that it is very similar to "goliath"?

  • ...Have you realised this IS the early version of Goliath?

  • yeah, i realised that 5 seconds after writing that silly comment lol, thanks for answering anyway ;)

  • I was at this concert in Tokyo! i went the second day and it was freakin' intense! Zavala was so into it he ripped his pants half way thru the show

  • Basically, if you don't at least appreciate the Volta, then you also don't like influences like Zeppelin, TREX, Rush, Yes, and a bunch of other bands that are better than you could ever be.

  • Perfect example; I hate Rush. But I do admire them.

  • rapid fire toolbooth AKA Goliath

  • if you like them, the mars volta are a life-altering experience live..cathartic brilliance

  • So true, and I'll be seeing them April 1st with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds!!! :D

  • lucky

  • Apparently irony has escaped the intellectual range of MJC... That's very observant, do you also know your times table?

  • The album title is a quote from a book.

Also, they are not the same thing. It's a misnomer.

  • u r the fucking idiot he take it from a book quote

  • This 'is' Rapid Fire Tollbooth but they re-recorded it as Goliath on Bedlam in Goliath

  • all you niggers bitching about fucking tremulant can suck my ass. so, what now, cedric isn't the god of sex anymore? you're just stuck up, butt-hurt oldfags and musical elitist, quit your fagging and just listen. cunts.

  • fuck you

  • oooohhhh - you play in an "experimental band" ... so you must be really great at your instrumentalists.

    fuck off and die

  • What the fuck kind of dumbass are you. Let's see if you can play better. Wait... I actually really doubt that because anyone that can talk a whole bunch of shit about music doesn't appreciate music for what it really is. Check your shit before smelling it you dumbass.

  • if you think this band sucks live, then why did you do search for their videos and just drop nasty comments? does that give some kind of morbid pleasure? i don't know about anyone else, but i'm not about to be convinced as to whether or not i like a band based on what some random pedophile such as yourself thinks. your comments have no value. just like you, cunt.

  • I seached for them because I LOVE THEM. But they arent that great live man, chill out

  • i cannot believe i found this...this is from "se dice bisonte, no bufalo." f*cking CRAZY!!!! hell yeah.

  • TMV are more venturous than ATDI could ever have hoped to be. if you detest their music so much, go listen to sparta, fuckwad.

  • we're all fortunate to be around while omar, nels cline and the bad plus are making their amazing music!

  • i don't care what music you like.... but Mars Volta rocks!!! They're more genious than ATDI

  • yeah man fuck you.

  • honestly you want to see a good show, go see these guys, saw them in Melbourne and they were incredible....

  • I saw them in 2001! They've become much tighter as a band and are experimenting with styles other than punk rock. I've heard all their works and have witnessed how they've changed over the years. What you have to realize is when most musicians get older they try to challenge themselves. It's fine that you preferred Tremulant Volta which was more punk rock and less progressive, but others prefer Frances Volta. So quit imposing your personal tastes on others because you come off as an indie snob.

  • What a nice, well thought out, intelligent response. I read all your posts before responding and you are not just talking about this video, but criticizing the band's overall musical direction and the people who like it. Maybe I would give your comment some thought if you compared this video to Robert Fripp and King Crimson..but Eddie Van Halen??? You sir are an idiot.

  • Actually...you don't have a clue. I talk shit because I used to be a big fan. Frances was the nose dive into shit, and I stopped caring after that. Have you of you even listen to Tremulant? Let alone even know what it is. Much different sound, much better quality, and this video here was the last straw. I just really had to admit now that they eat shit. And all of you shitheads are bottom feeders on whats left behind from ATDI, and tremulant i guess.

  • I don't think we're all living off ATDI, I mean.. De-Loused was a fucking fantastic album, and I didn't mind alot of the stuff off there last release Amputechture. Just because you're not all that fussed anymore doesn't mean their music's shit and that we're all living off their past achievements in ATDI.

  • these guys are bringing something different to the table, if you dont like it, you dont have to..... And the yelling thing? Anapoles? Man, good on him for singing and not yelling, like Cedric is the only guy who could yell in a song and make it sound good... I loved ATDI, but I think theyre just taking it a step further and challeging themselves...And kudos to them...You a Sparta fan at all?

  • "This video here was the last straw. I just really had to admit now that they eat shit."-Me

"Rapid fire probably isnt the best example of

    complicated music though haha"-newsfactor

I am bitching because this video sounds like rehashed Van Halen 1980's hair metal...and Omar looks like a dumbass trying to bust a shit solo...Still bullshit since Frances. You guys can complain about a debate on "jams", but go make yourselves think music like this is "challeging themselves," cause you suck.

  • HAHAHAHA.... Bitter man... haha...

  • The music is a lot more challenging for them and a lot more creative.Rapid fire probably isnt the best example of complicated music though haha. But you gotta keep true to where you at with your music.. Personally im sick of all these emo bands playing in 4/4 constantly and whinging about nothing,

  • You dont think that there has to be method to madness? Like jazz musicians who do improv always respect the original work and tend to leave spaces to just jam out. As a musician myself I love to have organised moments in music where you just go with whatever.Personally Im glad that they left ATDI..

  • anapoles, if you actually knew about the band and stopped bitching about an atdi breakup, you'd realize they did anything but sell out.

  • Haha, the best part about this is that your stupid ass doesn't realize they sold out a long time ago. At about the point when Cedric went from actual yelling to thinking he was a fucken diva. They disgrace their own songwriting capabilities by promoting their latin ass rock. I wonder if any of you realize they only "Latinized" their last names once they created Mars Volta. And they make every new member follow suit. I hope you know Juan Alderete's real name is John.

  • I typically respect people with different opinions, but there just seems to be no organized thought in this post.

  • Straight from an Atdi fan, old Mars Volta fan. This band has gone to fucken shit. Tremulant will be the greatest thing they ever did, along with plague upon your hissing. I hope you know Cedric and Omar have willingly admitted its all for the money now.

  • where did they say it was all for the money? Interested in reading that.... Not a bad way to earn money though, nothing wrong with it....

  • They were just joking when they said they did it all for the money. If they would want more money they would just sell out like all the other bands.

  • well aside the fact that venomhead has no idea what real music is... the video quality could have been better, but then again when could you get a decent quality video of a good band. props for gettin it up here.

  • Honestly, These guys are unreal... Its nice to see a band which doesnt write 3 and a half minute pop songs... Finally a band which writes in movements and loves the art of improv.... I almost gave up music after hearing these guys... This is musicians music... If you dont like it, go buy Britany or Christinas latest crap.... Ive seen these guys twice in melbourne and Id pay whatever to go see them again, best band to ever grace this planet....

  • By the way newsfacot, its not improv if you run the same 9 minute "jam" session at every live show. Watch every you tube MV video in support of deloused. Same lengthy progression of Roulette dares and Take the veil with the same solo's and organized rants. Every show has followed the same game plan

  • I wish everyone would just stfu; if you don't like The Mars Volta, don't waste time trying to get their fans to see "your light." You're like fucking Christian missionaries. Just shut up, go away, and have your point of view somewhere people will care and listen.

  • G G allin who else?

  • and what would be an example of a "structured" band?

  • structured band = dare i say...talentless band?

  • wow you have seem to hold the key to forming a GREAT BAND...

who do you play for again?... yea, thats right.

  • i saw them play two times in columbus, ohio (where i'm from). both times the crowd was aweful and booed them off the stage. i guess people from the columbus are too caught up with football to appreciate challenging music.

  • Marz Volta is challenging to listen to. They "free jam" too much and just rant. There is very little structure and too much "let go" in their music. Who wants to listen to two riff, 20 minute songs, with the singer just going off for a 2 hour drug induced set?

When MV narrows down their focus, which they have tremendous trouble in doing, that is when they really shine.

There is jam time, creative time, work time, and focus time in a band. MV misses 50% of that equation 100% of the time.

  • The Mars Volta is tremendously thought out. i can't imagine "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" 4:10 - 4:35 as an accident or any biproduct of spontaneity.

Now if you are referring to strictly their live sets, there certainly is more freedom to there music, but i find that this is done tastefully. Creating a new version of Cassandra Gemini rarely fails to get me lost in the moment.

"They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time." -Brian Fantana

  • even i sometimes skip through the slower bits in their songs, but i still dont think they would be the same without it, its the buildup that makes it great when you take the time to listen to a whole album. whoever reckons volta arent good enough can suck my wang. that includes you, venomhed

  • the new album is called "The Bedlam in Goliath" and is set for release in august (for those who want to know).

  • thanks arsenallad, I will be in line, most def.

  • I take it back... video wise this is the awesomest Mars Volta video I've seen. the energy is so apparent. the catalyst one is my favorite for hearing the actual song. 5 stars.

  • this is one if not THE greatest performance of this song... along with some of the others with TP in AUS and in LA. deatoni is sooo AWESOME too though! did they do one at vegoose w/ deatoni also? curious... hope they TMV have footage of this stuff in high quality.

  • They do, they have been filming some of the shows along the asia/australia and lastly california legs of the tour. its all going on the mars volta's First ever DVD

  • yeah of you like tmv.. youll love king crimson... theyre greaaaaaaaaat

  • view mojoerose's version of this. it's a lot better sound quality. this one is still pretty sweet.

  • volta always moves cooler than they sound...

which is like pure regurgitation. i miss the tremulant era volta, oh well...

  • omfg.

  • Vaguely reminiscent of "21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson. Good tune.

Omar's guitar work is so simple in this tune, but it's resplendant in its simplicity. I saw The Mars Volta perform a shorter version (I think) at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago last September (the 22nd, to be precise). The video can't even begin to compare to the live experience.

  • while they were playing this at the hordern pavillion in sydney, cedric jumped on one of the security guards and started biting his head.

  • That fro is out of control!

  • whoever says that THE mars volta sucks do not know what's music, come on guys it's ok to be a complete loser by not knowing how music sound like but you don't have to be rude with us and THE mars volta!!

  • haha dont call it "volta" dont even call them "mars volta" its THE you fucks THE THE THE!!

  • Boy, this band sucks. Too bad they ruined a good thing with at the drive in. Experiment all you want, but you guys suck. Long live atdi and jim ward.

  • its okay to dislike the music, but dont say the band itself sucks, they are extremely good musicians, and ATDI was just holding them back from being so great.

  • Do you like Sparta? If you do, your musical opinion is completely void. Judging by "long live atdi and jim ward", it sounds like you do.

  • man u r very gay and u sux and long live me to pay out fuckheads like you

  • bring it on punk, i'll pay your aussie ass to get over here and try. so long luc longly.

  • omar looks like lupin III with his hair cut

  • sounds a little like iron man

  • RAPID FIRE TOLLBOOTH I can't fucking WAIT till their new CD comes out. HOLY SHIT this song kicks ass!

  • thats a new song, sounds friggin good nice slow and returning beat

  • i saw them in brisbane a few weeks ago, they opened with this. then roulette dares.... lol great show.

  • i've seen them twice already...all time favourite concerts in my live....and i've seen a lot.

  • yeah that was my third time, and the best of them all since the other two were at the big day out festival.

  • I live in brisbane and wanted to see them so bad, i spent all mah moneyz on the chili's though haha, ahhh well, im sure ill have other chances.

  • i saw em on the 15th in sydney. they fuckin went OFF!! the most amazing thing ive eva seen. the mars volta kick so much ass

  • yeah i just saw them last night in melb. they've got a session guitarist but the high bit ur hearing is an obo. sounds awesome. oh and there's a new song that they played (that wasn't this) but there aren't any vids for it yet.. kinda dissapointed that no one put it on from last night.

  • session guitarist? its paul hinojos he has been with the band for ages

  • they have a back up guitarist now, dont they?? you can hear him play

  • 21st century schizoid man!

  • hahahaha, totally

  • i can hear some similarities but still very original. Kinda funny how omar inadvertently sounds like robert fripp sometimes.

  • GOD, how amazing can they get

  • Damn son!! I wonder if they are going to end up like a darker King Crimson...only ones I liked were In the Court of the Crimson King and Red and all 4 Larks' Tongues in Aspics...I wonder....

  • this is a sweet breakdown.... cant wait to see them in 18 days!!!!

  • i wonder if this songs about sonny corleone

  • Sounds In the Court of the Crimson King to me

  • Do you mean 21st Centry Schizoid Man?

  • yep, sorry, that was the song,i have the vinyl but forgot it.Thanks!.

  • Oh, and Deantoni is fucking awesome. Look him up on MySpace, he is amazing at breakbeat type stuff.

  • Ah, Mars Volta playing in 17/4 time signature. I think. It's hard to count because of the sound quality.

  • crazy.

  • actually nvm. its 17/8 right??

  • its 3 bars of 4/4 then 1 bar of 5/4

  • Glow in the dark rock gods

  • does anyone know if Deantoni played here? I found out what a great drummer he is.

  • yeah this is deantoni

  • omar and cedric dont give a fuck what any of you internet nerds think. Kill yourselves. HA!

  • Heh, and you think you're supperior...

  • Sounds Like Black Sabbath

  • this is the show where omar played the ibanez jetking

  • I think he may switch to that. I saw them on March 31, and he was plating an Ibanez Jet King

  • Main complaints:

    1. The main riff is way too Tom Morello

    2. Omar is a horrible spotlight hog

    3. He appears to be "rocking out", which is goofy

4.The main riff is basically the extent of the song, even though it lasts ten minutes

Maybe it will come out better on the record, but if they go from Amputechture to 70's rock wankery I'll lance one of my major arteries fo' reals

  • hhhhm its interesting you find his rocking out "goofy", haven't you seen any old tmv or better yet atdi videos? he has always danced like that, he just recently cut down, my guess because of age or to concentrate more on playing, that doesn't mean he stopped. or do you think that people rocking out is generally "goofy"?

  • Oh yeah I've seen him flailing around, which is pretty entertaining, but this seems more like general rocking out, which I'm certainly biased toward for some reason. I guess it was kind of overly critical, but I've been disappointed by one favorite band after another this year (definitely barring Amputechture) and just the mere thought of TMV playing regular rock riffs annoys me.

Although I didn't mind Frances the Mute one bit, so I'll just trust their good judgment.

  • How insightful, you must've went to an amazing music school to learn that the main riff is "way too Tom Morello"

  • 1. your a dick

    2. your a fuckhead

    3. your gay

    4. the sound quality is shit

    5. main riff normally goes the extent of the songs

    6. last but not least shut the fuck up

  • oh quit complaining they will be good either way

  • I was there. Fuck, what a GREAT show.

  • fake

  • Wow... i feel the King Crimson influence on that song, it fucking kicks ass!

  • Great final!

  • FUCK.

    LOOKS LIKE SO MUCH FUN

  • Great clip! Omar looks a lot like Santana on stage!

  • Thank god I finally found this, the next album looks to be the greatest.

  • I don't think so, because they don't have Jon theodore anymore:(

  • pridgen!

  • unbelievable drummer. the highlight of the show i thought.

  • 10 before being in tokio... THEY WHERE HERE!! IN MEXICO!! AND I SEE THEM!! and yo0u know the best part? U DONT!! LOL

  • Thanks, great!

    Somebody know the full setlist?

  • not 100% on this
