i played this when i was at college really loud to scare people walking past in the street, and i over-heard one of them shout "turn that bloody jazz off" . So even the moron students in Leeds can recognise it as jazz. Brotzmann is one of the master musicians of the world.
@Muloc7253 - I wouldn't find it strange necassarily because Black Saint, though more lyrical, requires more patient listening. What I find strange though is people mentioning this record in the same breath as avant garde records like Machine Gun for example.Black Saint is nothing of the sort.
This album,"Machine Gun," blows away pretty much everything that would be considered as,"intense," that came after it. I would put Brotzman's octet at the time,up in the same category as Discordance Axis.
yay! you get it. There's something about Discordance Axis that to me,reminds me of balls-out free jazz, and something about "Machine Gun," that brings to mind, brutal precise grindcore.
@jasonbigelow Discordance Axis is lame, it's just beginner grindcore in the same way that 'kind of blue' is beginner jazz. There's much more intense jazz out there than DA.
@jasonbigelow much more intense grindcore I meant to say, not jazz.
Seriously, Discordance Axis is like the 'In a Silent Way' of grind. Explore more underground grind and you'll see, it'll mean you forgetting Nuclear Blast and Roadrunner and the major labels and going to little Indonesian online stores and buying $1 cdrs limited to 20 copies, though.
This is an excerpt from an interview with Brötzmann and Radio Majjem concerning to "Machine Gun", could be helpful for comprehension:
"We wanted to change the world - stupid and foolish, I know - but that was in our mind. (...) My generation was born during the war and we grew up in the after-war situation and of course - if you want it or not - you had to think about things. What I was sure of, that such a thing like the 2nd World War, the Holocaust never will happen in this world again....."
".....but then you saw - growing up - the Korean War happened, the Cold War was there (...) the Vietnam was in preparing and all that kind of things motivated us to change the music. (...) Martin Luther King was killed just 40 years ago and all these kind of things you have in your brain and in your guts and you had to work that out. (...) We get rid of all the papers, of all the scores and we just tried to improvise...."

I figured out why it's called "Machine Gun." Because both machine guns and this song can physically damage you.

This is beautiful. Most people use this for hipsterness or "OH I LISTEN TO NOISE, AIN'T I AMAAAAAAZING", But this album is pretty much perfect.

@andrewneedsalawn funny that, I thought of this more as noise music than jazz. Funny musical boundries are blurred
