I use to be a Atheist until 911. See I was in my office in the north tower when it happened. The very people/Faith Groups I use to make fun of and hate bash walking to work with my Atheist friends were in my time of need the ONLY ones who helped me. To make a long story short I later learned not one charity Atheist Group was there to help anyone. It was a real eye opener for me.
I was lucky to have seen him speak a few years ago. He truly inspired me. Thank you Howard for helping see things I didn't let myself see before. Knowledge is power! Only we can find our own truth. And doing nothing is not an option. He will be missed.
I was deeply saddened to hear of Zinn's passing. I was lucky enough to see him speak at The Brattle Street Theater in Boston, discussing his graphic novel History of An American Empire. I was also lucky to be able to ask him a question. I asked him what should we as a people, living in a information age, with all this new outlets to express ourselves. He replied with something to the effect 'We must use whatever possible to fight back. Governments have fallen, and this empire shall also fall.
"...think your own ideas and don't depend on saviours ,,, just ordinary people - people who are not famous - if they get together, if they persist, if they defy the authorities, they can defeat the largest corporation in the world".
yes, I agree, but whether we like it or not most people want to look up to someone - it's always easier. Anyways, my point is that there are still people who fight the right cause. They are not necessarily people we need to adore. And there will be many more to come... :)
That position will need to be fulfilled by us, and if it cannot be fulfilled, then I fear what ever remains of so called democracy might one day fear to exist.
@andyx1205 I think that torch of responsibility will be passed on to us. No one lives forever but civilization will. It's the intellectuals responsibility to defog and enlighten, and it's our responsibility to educate ourselves to become intellectuals.
It truly is a shame that everyone in my AP US Class hates Zinn because they're rich suburban folks so they don't believe/aspire to a word he says. He will be missed. He will be missed.
@igotalottastuff Ah! AP classes are terrible, they say that is meant to challenge students but being a former student (now homeschooling) I really did not see any genuine thought. We were simply given a lot of "challenging work"
"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that
human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage,
kindness. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand
utopian future. The future is an endless succession of presents and to live now as we think human beings should live in defiance of all that is bad around us is itself a marvelous victory." Howard Zinn

So, because they were there in your "time of need" that means there's a God? Moron.

Howard Zinn and Salinger are gone.
Noam Chomsky and Bill Moyers are also delving into old age.
