This was arguably one of the best concerts I've ever seen, even if I only did see it on TV on Nickelodeon (before it went mainstream) when it aired in late 1983. I have a lot of fond memories of watching it and it made me a Men at Work fan.
Being a semi-pro musician myself, I can honestly say if you want to see people dancing around like monkeys, don't be surprised if the music quality suffers. It's hard to focus on dead-on delivery when you're distracted by having to compound it with dance moves. Take your pick: good music or good dancing.
All I can think about when I hear this excellent song ( Its A Mistake) is Pres.Bush " Making a Mistake" when looking for those " Weapons Of Mass Destruction" !!!!!!
Lack of enthusiasm, maybe. Then again, they'd toured for two years behind "Business As Usual", had to record "Cargo" before they were really ready, and then were out on the road again. Colin Hay has mentioned that they weren't getting along well as a band by this time.
This band had a really great sound, and some damn good songs. They weren't around long, but they made their mark. It was definitely an exciting time in music when Men at Work hit the airwaves.
Its a great song in every respect: maybe Colin Hay was just just too concerned not to drop a note and so made sure he delivered. Pity as it rocks and the whole joint should be jumping to this classic ska-rock song. Guitar solo to die for - well played that man!
Men at Work is a great band. They are often compared to The Police. Can you picture The Police delivering "Message in a Bottle" or any of their other songs with this kind of lethargy? The answer is no. Great solo on "It's a Mistake" though.
This is what this song is about: Isaiah 1:2 the same principle as the United Nations.
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
The fuck that I am talking about you haven't experienced, yet. The fuck about it is that hot-heads like you would push the button to destroy everything around you, and afterward, try to find your momma's tit, and it won't be there.
I thing the band sounds great live! all the musicians are focused on playing flawless each song, the lead singer should have been full enthusiastic and he should have looked like he was enjoying the music. He is too serious and boring, eventhough the music is perfect, they are artist XD
Colin Hay the lead singer looked pretty intense and focused to me... He wanted to give a good rendering. He managed to do that. A flawless performance in my view. Perhaps lack of enthusiasm comes from being on the road and performing two or three concerts a day. It'll knock any person out!
Having said that, raulisea, your are right... I just think it's hard to look super excited all the time given the demands of the biz. Being a star is hard on a person! Very hard.
I agree wholeheartedly with SolarTrail. They sound excellent live, but show no heart or passion for their music whatsoever. At least act a little goofy like your videos to show the crowd that you are happy to be there.
Oops! And I made a mistake on the previous entry. What seemed to kill their momentum here in the states was their appearance on the Grammys in 82 doing Down Under. It sounded dead, without any guts to the song. The audience seemed less than enthused after giving them a raucous welcome. That was my impression anyway.
something about that guitar solo in "It's A Mistake"...still gives me chills everytime i hear it.

@real80smusic
i think that the police are still underrated and few people appreciate the fine subtleties of their music.

I'd prefer to see them live then see some pointless bouncing about like Lady Ga Ga. ..My respect for her cardiovascular fitness aside.
