Jack Bruce's magnificent tune - sung to perfection by Jack himself - with the great Leslie West from Mountain on guitar!! Jack is the ultimate triple threat - one of the greatest electric bass players, singers and composers in all of rock music (see Cream, etc). He also has a group of absolutely unique solo albums that are vastly underappreciated!
Great version indeed, thx for sharing.. The original version is on Jack Bruce's "Songs for a Tailor" of 1969, Pete Brown, who wrote most of Cream lyrics, wrote this one too.
I have always, & still do wish I was born in nineteenth century America. A more wholesome place than any part of today's world. FreshAir , no burglar alarms for the horses !!
I was in Belgium in 1974, 18 yrs old. This is where i remember first hearing of 'Mountain' I just love them. Some of their songs bring tears to my eyes. I was hanging out around
i was at the hard rock in tampa and i saw the gibson melodymaker leslie west played just a week ago.
i couldn't believe i find this recording today. this was on one of the first lps i bought for my first stereo.. so long ago.
also, when they were closing down the fillmore there was a final concert and i believe mountain played this song at that final show... wnew radio had it all live...
Leslie is a classic--no question. His feel and musical ability only improved with age. There's a little bit of Beethoven in all his great solos--just listen. Very heavy in the old days. He just kept learning. I think Bruce was pretty ill in the mid-80's when this was recorded. Hence the great Tim Bogert playing bass on the Theme tour. Sorry so few have viewed/listened to this version, along with the short verse live one. But that is the times we live in. Hope Leslie tours again!
Leslie just finished touring with Joe Satriani, and at the end of both sets, Joe AND Leslie jam together. If you wan to see the fireworks.... and I DO mean FIREWORKS, check this:
Caught it--WOW! The Notes were interesting too. Satriani gave West a custom guitar, a gesture of great respect among guitarists. Much like when Clapton tried to give Hendrix a left-handed Strat on the last night of Jimi's life. He never got it to him. I liked watching West trying to play Satriani's Strat after they traded guitars. Strats are so hard for even good guitarists to play great if they are not accustomed to them. There's no neck like a true Strat. Thanks, Depper.
No, Its from THEME, an album Leslie put out in 1986. This was a reinterpretation of the original. And yes it is Jack Bruce singing.I saw this tour, and Tim Bogert played instead of Bruce.
If you click on "more info" on the top right of your screen, I give all the details of this song and album. Leslie West "Theme" is the name of the album. Bruce singing. West on guitar. This was a studio album, not a live album. Theres a short haunting solo of Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" on there too. Untouchable tone.
Oh, and I gave this video 5 *****'s. I will be back often, your hard work putting this slideshow together will make many Mountain, West, Bruce, & Laing, Cream and in particular Leslie West and Jack Bruce fans very happy. GREAT photos and transitions....
Aww thanks Misty! We seem to have very similar tastes in music. I have broad tastes but out of all of them, Leslie just seems to stand above the pack. Just an incredible voice and his guitar-work just can not be duplicated.. its that stellar tone. When it comes to guitar tone, Mr West stands alone. Im totally stoked you enjoyed those videos!!! Please keep in touch!
Oh I DO love this song. Leslie does some great string bending, in a much more relaxed style than he ever used before... there is just something almost surreal about West's playing... noone else gets quite THAT tone. His guitar tone one of the true marvels of rock n roll.
Yes Depper....I did hear it, that was the best version I found on you tube.. I thought anyway. Depper you don't like this song? I notice it's not on your site. Thanks again for all your help and as soon as I get some free time I have I'm going to spend on your site I see you have a lot of songs I can't wait to check out.
...without doing research (because I dont have to!) that would be off off Leslie West's rare "Theme" album. Leslie West and Jack Bruce got together on a Howard Stern radio appearance in 1988, where they played an inter-continental version of "Theme From An Imaginary Western." Bruce in England, West in Stern's NYC studio. Once they were done, they knew they had to record one last album together. This is that album.
By the way... that is Jack Bruce singing. Jack actually wrote the song. This song was Jack's favorite song that he ever wrote, but Clapton hated it... just couldnt get a feel for it. Leslie loved it, and Bruce gave it to Mountain to record... and the rest is history.
WoW !!!... ThiS is Beautiful, Misty ~ what a Great Song. Love all the images, kinda makes me homesick. Beautifully put together. Sending <3 to ya Girl :)
Wow Mouse... Some how I think this is a double edged sword but let me ask anyway ...Were you from originally from the West "OR" Are you speaking about the other kind of home? (lol) Thanks Mouse...Love Ya Girl....BTW....Do you have a myspace account? I'd like to share a few things with you. If not let me know when you have a few minutes and I'll lift the privacy setting on one of my albums I have there so you can get into it.
Born & raised in Vegas, Misty. Where I spent my 1st 25 years. I miss the Desert sometimes...Nope don't have a MY Space, guess I could make one ? let me get back to you on that. Love to ya ~
Through time and space....there is a moment when paths cross. It is at this intersection where the magick is at its strongest. A place where connections are made, words are not needed....a feel....a touch...a sense of belonging...the will to continue to blaze new trails. Most importantly a portal where people like you enter, magick shared and for a moment in time "home" exists........ Love You Girl.... Thank You :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you misty. I have loved that song since the first time I heard it, which was when it first came out (I date myself seriously there). It is, in fact one of three songs that made me stop doing what I was doing when I first heard it and just take in the imagery. Speaking of imagery, yours was fantastic! Thanks again. BTW, that was Jack Bruce singing. Where did you find that version?
No.... Rondolce, the thanks goes out to you for this one "Hugs You." Wow....you really had me going on this one because although it is listed as Leslie West. I could also hear the difference. With a little reasearch ...you were right it is Jack Bruce singing. I found this version on I-Tunes there are 4 differnt versions listed there. This one was listed as A Theme For An Imaginary Western.....Leslie West. The only 4 minute+ version.
