This version and "War Dog Tribute 2" are both wonderful. Although Simon & Garfunkel's music is very moving, IMHO the music with this video suits even better. It is so spare and beautiful, and evocative of a dog's innocence and trust. Dogs have no words, only their emotions and their actions (true, they have no music either). "War Dog Tribute 2" is a beautiful and heartfelt soldier's remembrance; if the dogs had music of their own, this remembrance would be theirs.
Thanks for the information! I'll definitely check out that book! The thought of those dogs being left behind is really disturbing so if there's evidence to the contrary that would be great to know.

As others here are stating, the poor dogs that served in Vietnam were left behind (while locked in their cages) when the American troops left Vietnam. All the dogs left behind most likely starved to death or were killed by the Vietnamese troops. They served their country with bravery and loyalty and were just left to die because the American government placed no value on their lives. I hope that today's military dogs are treated with more care and respect.

@chemcam1 We have adopted a dog that has served. The military has a program for this. Some dogs are designated for persons with prior handling experience, some are designated as ok for families, law enforcement, etc. Go to the Lackland AFB homepage and search "military working dog adoptions." It's a great program. This is the place where all military working dogs get their start, regardless of service branch. Most dogs "muster out" here, also. There are other routes, but more tedious. Good Luck
ikambor: It's a fact that during Vietnam dogs were left behind, we also know that the DoD does not allow troops to befriend strays, different reasons, and there was a law that prohibited anyone from bringing back a dog with them. Where the Mil. faults is that they do not provide enough assistance for pet owners when PCSing, there are limited spaces in a MAC flight, and won't allow anyone flying space A to travel with a pet. Regs. on abandonment are no enforced. I have 18 adopted animals.
Cco. 3rd Eng. Blt. 9th MAB 3rd MAR DIV on or about the 27 of July 69 we left country on LST's from Qua Viet (am sure it is misspelled) was just below the DMZ... we took our mascot "clutch" with us to Okinawa... after three weeks on the rock - the night before i was going back to serve with the 1st MAR DIV that dog showed up that evening... true story... still have his picture...
Idiots here post shit saying we just leave the dogs,, that is a fucking lie,, not even 1 was left behind,,,,,, they all get advanced medical treatment just like any person would,,, so stop with the BS that you do not know any thing about,,, any citizen who can provide a good home can adopt one of these dogs,, the problem is the YOU the US citizen who takes everything for granted and doesnt think about the dogs,, go adopt one you inconsiderate asshole, stop blaming every one else
most of the dogs during the Vietnam war were left behind... you were not there... i served with the 3rd MAR DIV and the 1st MAR DIV... you know nothing of what happened to those warriors... you were not there so stop YOUR bullshit...
acording to your profile your profile you where 14 years old when vietnam's war was over, you must have been a mighty impressive young soldier to serve in two division at such a youg age!!.. i'm impressed.
Families area allowed two pets on a Mil flight, there are only a few spaces and many families are faced with either abandoning the pets, or paying for commercial flights. The base kennels are there for profit and charge anyone turning in a pet from $125 to $250. There's no guarantee that they won't put it down. The Mil. should hold anyone that abandons accountable. I paid alot of money to transport my pets, all 17 were abandoned or turned in to be euthanized.
we do bring home the dogs,, the DOD has programs where any citizen who can provide a good home can adopt one of these dogs,, the problem is nit the DOD, the problem is the US citizen who takes everything for granted and doesnt think about the dogs

This is too sad. Knowing that all the dogs in this video had to be left behind breaks my heart. What did they do when the ones that cared for them left them? I have seen much abandonment of faithful animals, the Mil. needs to stop the non sense and recognize that these animals keep our troops alive. Not only war dogs, but any mutt on the streets.

Agree 110% 12SPS ! ! ! All yo did was try and do a TRIBUTE, not for money but out of respect. That´s what´s wrong with our country, MOST, not all, but MOST are in it for themselves and the $ $ $. If I knew WHO complained (Artist or Record Label) I would send em an Email telling them will never spend another penny on their records!
It's an issue between YouTube and Warner Music Group (Warner Brothers Records). The song I had for this was Simon and Garfunkel's "Bookends." It was muted and then this music replaced it. There is a re-master of "Bookends" that Sony owns and they do have an agreement with YouTube. So I will try to make the change soon.
I have 6 rescue German Shepherds and they are more intelligent than most humans that I have met. Loyal, loving, obedient, trusting, not a trecherous bone in them, devoted. All they want is your love...

@xyber6 The US at least has a program to integrate military dogs back into civilian life. There is an adoption program. One is in Texas through the USAF. There are probably others.

Sorry for the crappy music. YouTube made me change it because I did not have the rights to use the one I posted. The men and dogs in this video who died have to wonder about the stupidity of such an action. ASCAP/BMI WMG. I don't care who you are...these men gave their all and I can't even use a deceit song in tribute!!! BS
I understand that some say it is wrong to use dogs to fight war, but we also use humans to fight war. All life is precious, and for a dog to follow soldiers into hell, then it speaks only to their bravery, loyalty, and heroic nature. I salute all soldier, and though I thoroughly disagree with war, I respect the courage and fortitude of all brave souls, human and canine.
You opinion is taken, but it is very obvious that you have no personal experience or understanding of what the dog teams did some 40 years ago. Maybe you would have if your brother or sister was one of those saved.
When I got back to Guam between runs to Da Nang, the place of peace I sought out every time was the War Dog cemetery in the south of the island. Would sit with Bob and Wotan and Bill and share tears and stories with four-footed heroes. They understood what I never will...
My husband was in Da Nang, Khe Sahn, etc. One day a little puppy came into the camp and of course my husband "adopted" him. He wasn't a war hero, but my husband loved him dearly and called him Pup Pup. Unfortunately he had to leave the dog when he returned to the US.
I am so glad to see that today, the new MWDs are being honor as they are laid to rest. A tribute they and the handler deserve. WE learn from our past. Its good to know the gates of heaven are now guarded, by these dogs, such giving dogs.
These dogs saved many lives but at the end of the war they were either given to the South Vietnamese or euthanized. They deserved more respect than that.
I cannot imagine the bond they would have serving our country in such a way with a friend so loyal, leading them with senses of hearing and smell we do not possess. Thank you for making this video and thank you for those that serve our country, protecting us and our way of life. God bless you!
These dogs were so helpful in Viet Nam. They were given to the South Vietnamese because they could not get them out. It is a shame because their fate was doomed. They were true heros. G-d Bless them!

Wow. Great video. I love German Shepherds and own one myself. I love hearing about dogs that save peoples lives. That shot of the shepherd knocking down the Vietnamese soldier was awesome. They truly are mans best friend. What happened to the dogs that got left behind? That doesn't seem right at all that they would be abandoned to the whims of the North Vietnamese after faithfully serving for so many years.
I have War Dogs listed in the "my heroes" section on my myspace profile & of course on my dog's myspace profile too. My uncle was a radio-man in Vietnam & he told me many times about the dogs saving his & fellow soldiers lives. The only missing from this video is Sgt.Stubby, America's 1st & most decorated war dog (an American Pit Bull Terrier). Great video. There is a story of a soldier who stayed behind after the war because he refused to leave his dog behind. The govt doesn't bring them back
Thank-you, 12sps, for this wonderful video. And by the way, have any of you guys watching this read the book, Cracker, by Cynthia Kadohata? of you haven't and liked this video, try it.
