this man HATED What's Going On and refused to release it. If Marvin wouldn't have stood up we would never heard that masterpiece. What the fuck does he know about music?
Berry Gordy & Motown without THE SUPREMES would have been just another mediocre small time Record Label & C.E.O.
The back room sleazy contract he had THE SUPREMES and the rest of the Motown Stables under stripped them of any control of their careers, cheat them out of royalties and due profits, had a SEX FOR STARDOM alliance with Diane Ross on which she "put out" and he eventually made her a "solo act" at the expense of THE SUPREMES (Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson & Cindy Birdsong)
I love Berry Gordy! No, he was not a saint, he made plenty of bastard assed moves and possibly ruined some lives. He didn't give "just due" to many people who deserved it (ie: James Jamerson, Flo Ballard, etc.). He also put all of his eggs (and other peoples eggs) in Diana Ross's basket. However, I admire his ambition and his creation of an institution that became a major artery in the music industry even to this day. I would love the opportunity to speak with him.
I love Berry Gordy. Yes, he did some things in his past that he should not have but come on, lets stop acting like he was the first or the last (p.diddy, jay z) to do dirty business. This man gave Rick James, The Jacksons, Diana Ross, Tina Marie, and many others their start. Lets be real Berry is THE most respected black man in music. He changed the face of music and thats what he should be known for
He had a monomanical obessesion for promoting Ross who incidentally was also his girlfriend. However after 20 years in Motown and all of her efforts, she we also given the short end of the stick with only 250K to take home. Berry used Diana's talent and charisma but Diana also used Berry's Motown to gain superstar status. They were both cut from the same cloth...had he been more interested in music than money, Motown could have produced hits to this day.
@bholyway -Could not have said it better. Not so much a genius but a lucky pimp of talent. He should have came to the rescue of Flo so she did not lose her beloved home. He is full of himself like Ross. He needed to help Flo live to enjoy all he took from her, he should reinvent himself by helping the children of Flo Ballard and helping them get an education. I am sure in the end he will not be remembered as such a hero, and that alone could kill him. He cannot believe he was fair.
I agree with the people that are so thankful to Berry Gordy for Motown and the Artistes. What I'm not happy about is the fact that he IS more concerned with the GREEN. I know that he has BLOCKED anyone from being able to make a Film/TV or Musical about the Motown Time and its Artistes, which is a shame. You can do the history of Artistes before Motown and After Motown, but not during the Motown years and that's a shame.
Both Berry Gordy & Diana Ross are two sides of the same filthy coin!
Both 07mrsrod & bholyway are right on target!
This people here that loath on each other by giving praises to the man that accidentally did a right with the crossover and integration of african americans into show business & society but within Motown the injustices like Florence Ballard and the neglected talent that simply got shelved by contract and manipulated is a disgrace!
Thank God that Mr. Gordy ran his business and did'nt spend valuable time balled up on the bed crying because of people's words. Not many have that quality. I LOVE MOTOWN1
If you have not met Berry Gordy, as most of us have not, then the media and biographies and autobiographies are all that we have to make our decisons on. It appears that most of the posts and comments here have been mad by people who's "knowledge" was obtained from Dreamgirls", "Entertainment Tonight", and word of the mouth (the best sources eh?). Before deciding on (judging) him, one should get their facts from a wider range of sources and then "judge".
too bad you broke the "HEARTS" of your musicians berry and gave them no warning when you closed the doors to motown in '72 and moved to los angeles. James Jamerson and others drank them self to death from depression of not being able to no longer provide for their familes. People like Smokey and Diana were grateful...because he took care of them. Especially Diana.
@dannpenn he's a prick. like hell half motown artists ended up broke and in poverty. stevie, diana, smokey is only ones that didn't end up broke..he catered to smokey and diana but stevies mommas gave him an ultimatum when he signed with the label..
I could not believed all the hate flowing on this thread for this man who brought so much joy through out the world with the music he helped created. Not saying that Gordy is a saint, not by all means. Yeah, he may did some of the things that he should not had done, but who the hell for all of you to judge him for? You people call him a slave owner, and you listening to Motown music? The fuck outta here! Y'all are a bunch of hypocritical assholes!!
It's all about the crab in the bucket mentality that most Black people have. They are their worst critic of each other and their worst enemy. They always have to find something wrong or something negative to say about another Black person who has made it to the top. And Black people wonder why they as a whole haven't progressed enough. It's not only just the White man oppressing Black people, but Black people are doing it to themselves with that crab in the bucket mentality.
@tommiexander WTF are you injecting racism into this matter. This is not a Black on Black issue, this is about Berry Gordy who built Motown into highly respected label in the history of music. However, when you ran a successful company like Gordy did, there's bound to be some dissections with others people. I'm just responding to these idiots who called him slave driver, pimp and all that baloney. He made stars out of most of them. (continued)
@MooseShady Some of stars who didn't panned out well at Motown, wind up working for Gordy because they were that loyal to him and they thank him for giving them a break. Florence could have work it out with Gordy when she got fired from her group. Unfortunately, her jealously and bitterness towards Diana and added her drinking problem destroyed her in the end.
07mrsrod.....Florence Ballard had her share of problems and very very sad to say, ended up as a disruptive alcoholic pain in the ass, according to most accounts. Despite many statements from those who were there that she had an Aretha-like voice, all her recorded solos fall far short of a classic R&B voice, Aretha or otherwise. Just because she founded the group, doesn't mean that she had the most commercial voice or that a group with her as lead, would have succeeded or had any longevity.
@mhertz25 Florence had her share of problems. However, her being regarded as a pain is overblown. She stood up for herself. She didn't take no bull. Yes, her solo album is less than marvelous. Maybe you should listen to her Motown recordings when she was still in good spirits (like "Ain't That Good News" from the Sam Cooke tribute album the Supremes did). By time she went solo (by default), she was a broken women. Motown had wrenched her spirits. They abused her emotionally
@mhertz25 and finacially. Gordy not only ripped off the artists; he also ripped off the public. But, it would be years before we would find out that the Supremes records after Florence left, would not really be Supremes records, or the Vandellas, or Marvellettes, and the list goes on. Except for solo artists and male groups (with the exception of the Four Tops), we got the Andantes with the lead singers of these groups. The artists got ripped off, and so did the writers.
@mhertz25 Why do you think people like Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown? Gordy and his but-kissin' side kick (Smokey Robinson) were rakin' in all the cash; and, everyone else was getting chicken feed.
@mhertz25 I'm a Capitalist, and I believe in Capitalism.....but, Berry Gordy was a Capitalist in the bad sense. He used people and got rich off of THEIR talents with little regard for their well being, except for maybe MS. ROSS. But, then, after she got what she wanted from him, she flew the coop. Payback is a dog. And, so is Berry Gordy!
Scratch a LIE find a THIEF and BERRY GORDY you are a Disgusting THIEFS who sold our Culture down the Drain for your own SIck ass HOMOSEXUAL fantasies !!!
Man LOVE you faggot homosexual come out the CLOSET you and the OTHERS!!!! You can't TURN a real man out SATAN using the MASONIC to do your DIRTY SHIT!!!
Well to me without Berry Gordy, we would not have had Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. And Berry made Black & White unite through music. There were other great artists that came out of Motown also. Basically Berry Gordy made history. Whenever I hear a Motown song, it just makes me really happy. I love Berry Gordy! And for those of you who judge, who among you have done no wrong, life would have been tough in those days and I am sure Berry Gordy now is doing all he can to make a difference.
@rumbapassion thank you so much..folks jus need to ShUT their traps..That is why you have artists giving him praise..if he wasent all that marilyn and billy who wasnot on the label still give praise.
LOv Detroit!with all the musical history n thz city...it would b wonderful if these musical greats would come back & lend their talents 2 the composition of a Detroit Youth Choir. We should hav an outstanding choir that exceeds that of Chicago. Withall the negative news lately, it could b what is needed 2 sav r babies. After all most r descendents of the Motown legacy. Thz is how those musical greats from the Motown label &Detroit spin offs labels could contribute by becoming change agents.
In spite of what BG may have done - I feel as though he laid the foundation for all of those EXCEPTIONAL/OUTSTANDING entertainers that came out of motown. Even though they were very talented, this country during th 50's and 60's was so racist that white record compaines wouldn't have realized the talent and didn't have the thirst and vision that BG had to to work with and promote them. Because of BG we have the motown sound -Nothing and I mean Nothing can come close. Thanks BG.
@diggidydoe "should be no complaints" is giving him a lilttle toooo much credit. The motown sound came from the writers and musicians and the being black artist. My problem with Mr. Gordy is in knowing black artist had doors closed to them and contracts offered to them that offered pennies he in opening the door to them gave them a nickle. We of all people shouldn't take advantage of each other . Even if it's a little less of a rip off than what someone else does.
Thank you Mr. Gordy for launching Michael Jackson. I will forever be grateful to you for that. Also for your respectful words about Michael at his funeral. Michael was fortunate to have had you as his mentor.
it's funny how some of yall are dogging berry gordy as you are constantly making him rich. he's the father of the soundtract of America. Much honorable, renown music has been produced under his guidance. needless to say he brought to the world the person who would later become known as "The King of Pop". give this man his credit and let God judge him.
the comments truly amaze me against berry gordy jr. I could not have stated it better than you did. Someone posted on here saying berry cheated on his wife with Dina Ross. First who the Hell is Dina? I always thought it was Diana. once known as Diane. who was Not a minor but 21yrs old as he didnt begin dating her until after they hit big.1965. If not for Berry and his dream..the world would not have met the future king of Pop. and groups like no other label.and the Music. Such Foolish People.
@blkshepherd A bunch of haters...most of whom have no talent. They just say things for shock value. They wouldn't know a G clef from a Bass clef ; a major chord
from a minor; a whole note from a quarter note. Get my drift ?
You know.. I have an element of respect for Gordy. He did something special for talented African American artists that maybe would have never been discovered. For that I thank him as this is some of my fav music today. However he hid the funk brothers in the snake pit and pissed on his studio musicians, Without the funk brothers there would have been no motown. For that he can kiss my ass.
He cheated on his wife with a then minor Dina Ross. He pimped those young talents like a piece of meat to make money for himself. Morally he was a dog. Business wise he was a genius. If he were white in the eighteen hundreds he's made a successful slave owner. JERK
@master4444t No I'm not a genius and I did not, will not audition for Berry. I just tell the truth. I'm sorry if it hurts. But it is what it is. P.S. I meant Diana. Thanks. Side note, Berry helped a lot of people. Many would not have made it without him. Mike is not one of them. Michael would have blown up anyway.
@kittydreamz86 Michael would not necessarily had BLOWN up had he NOT been at MOTOWN. There were Many talented singers that were out along with michael and his brothers that didnt have the motown machine behind them and they quickly disappeared or folks never even heard of them. Just like if HDH was not assigned to the Supremes they would NEVER had hit big. HDH and the voice of Diana was a match made in heaven
@kittydreamz86 NOT true. .Michael NEEDED Motown. because when they were out they were NOT heard of. until they came to motown and diana ross name was put behind them..I kNOW because I was alive and well when they Came out and I lived in NYC and never heard of the J5 or michael before that first album sorry.
@blkshepherd I was born in Gary Indiana. The Jackson's were heard of. Sorry. Motown helped them but they would have been famous. They were unique, good, and full of determination.
@bholyway I guess he pimped them right into becoming (millionaires) and secured their futures. It does not matter as much how you start - what really matters is how you finish. He laid the foundation for their success. Most aspiring black singers from that era would have killed for the opportunity to sign with Motown.
@uniqque14u I honestly don't think most of them became millionaires. (please check that info) neither did he "secure" their future. Most black aspiring singer did want to sign with Motown for two reasons, One they didn't know any better, and two they didn't have anything better. It doesn't make it (him) right. Very few artist from motown became millionaires nor would sign the same contract again. Berry looked after MR. Gordy. Believe it.
@bholyway let it go..and your WRONG...aretha franklin james brown many others became successful without motown.. Ike hayes, barry white, sam cooke, none on motown..all became giants.
@bholyway who the hell is Dian Ross..and your WRONG..he did not date diana ross until 1965 she was 21yrs old..and it was After they hit big not before..You can call him what you want to. but if not for him there would have been no tempts no supremes no marvin gaye no stevie wonder no Martha and the Vandellas, No Jackson Five or Michael ..no Mary Wells...nO Smokey and the Mircales..so give the man some damn credit and quit harpin on his relationship with diana which had nothing to do her talent
@blkshepherd her name is Diane Ross actually. This an old debate. I don't care anymore but... There would have been many of these artist who got their talent from God and hard work. Berry deserves credit and I give him what he's done. However, you can not deny neither do these artist that he was a not always fair to them.
@disneylover4ever her name on the birth certificate was Diana..it was mispelled..her father name her diane. why is folks making such a big deal over a persons name..hell i changed my last name to my middle..its no big deal..diana diane. chaka changed her name. dionne changed her name..why cant diana change hers? and why are you continuing to dig up old bones..no he wasnt fair but many mess up their own lives without berry..david, paul, rick james
@bholyway You make a very good point. I don't know much about Berry Gordy. However, if what you're saying about him is true, then I'm losing a lot of respect for him.
@alibatley28 It's true. I speak for myself, I have a love/hate relationship for Berry. (really I don't hate anyone but you know what I mean). Google some the Motown artists. They struggled and still do, after giving so much to Motown, they got dumped on by Berry. When he made millions, he had them on measily low set salaries. A lot of their depression and sturggles in life are directly related to their total committment to Motown, only to end up broke, depressed and lost. Greed sucks.
@bholyway yes he threw them under the bus. I respect him because we love the artists he brought to our attention, but a lot of them suffered in their life, then and NOW. He played musical chairs. In and out, and he stayed in his chair and never moved. That sucks. If you go threw the Motown roster, most of them were struggling. You are so right with your comment. I don't think he ever (even now) GAVE A DAMN.
@bholyway i've heard lots of bad things about this man. he even mistreated one of my favorite groups Frankie Valli & the 4 Seasons. in the early seventies b. gordy signed the group to motown. two LP's, several singles, were produced, but w/o any hits. it was due to lack of promotion. i wonder why ? he's not the only evil guy on this earth. there are so many more. i'm also curious to why the Jacksons left motown for epic ? ****
I think one of the problems is that many of the early Motown artists were truly "kids" when they signed contracts with Motown but he was a businessman and his relationship with his artists was a business relationship - the first guys who worked with him like Smokey Robinson and the more mature artists like Gladys Knight didn't get taken because they were interacting with Gordy as business people - the teen-agers were not.
Don't let his soft spokenness fool U!! Do your research on Berry Gordy back in the days of Motown!! Start with Eddie Kendricks Interview and Flo Ballards daughters interview about how Berry Gordy treated their mother and also Diana Ross!! I was in "Shock" with disbelief!! Money can control a lot of things!!
My father told me more about Berry Gordy than was generally known to many. He ran numbers on the then famed Hasting Street area. Also, he gambled whenever his money was big. True, we all have demons but, to the point of putting up the Marvelettes while gambling? His song writing was mediocre at best but he surrounded himself with smart people. Oh sure he started Motown and he helped it to blossom. But seeing the methods he use makes him a quiet Tyrant. HOW SOON WE FORGET!!
After 41 years from her ouster with The Supremes and 33 years after her death, Florence Ballard was never discussed from Berry Gordy. I WOULD LOVE FOR GORDY TO BE INTERVIEWED, AS OF NOW, ABOUT HIS FEELINGS TOWARD FLORENCE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. AT LEAST LET US GET HIS SIDE OF HOW BERRY FELT TOWARD FLORENCE. AS A FLORENCE BALLARD FAN, I'M SURE THE REMAINDER OF HER FANS WOULD ALSO LIKE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN....... RIP FLORENCE 1943-1976........
@07mrsrod I'm a Capitalist, and I believe in Capitalism..........but, Gordy was a Capitalist in the bad sense. He used people and got rich off their talents with little regard for their well being, except, maybe, MS. ROSS. But, then, after she got what she wanted from him, she flew the coop. Payback is a dog. And, so is Berry Gordy.
@07mrsrod the reply I sent your way wasn't ment for you. sorry. it was ment as part of the comments I made to mhertz25 comment. my fault. thanks for sticking up for Flo!
Berry Gordy was a very talented man, but he also was very greedy. He would take in talented youth and use them for what they're worth and then dump them out
Are you kidding me......I am a college graduate and I did my "Research" do yours.......This man "Hates" being "Black".... He's talking about Re-inventing himself......."God" gave him the "Tools" to start with "Talent" that's DNA, not about him.....We don't need the KKK, we have him..... I use to love me some "Barry Gordy" but after my "Research" on him in "Detroit".... Smokey Robinson, and DIana Ross... I said "Wow" unbelievable.....
What do you do for the "BLACK COMMUNITY".....???? We need to educate and past on talent, like other "Cultures"..... Why do we "Disrespect" each other like that???? It makes" no sense". No UNITY!!!!
Why not have a factory and put some young "black" boy or girl to work or through college....Instead of making things look or seem so, hopeless... If my comment offends anyone.... The truth is the truth...& The truth shall make you free........I speak from a "Biblical place.....Secrets......Wow, how do you trust after that........"God is still Good"..And the Devil is a Liar....
This man has "Millions" of dollars while there are starving "Artist" who trusted him
I use to love me some "Barry Gordy" but he's sooo jealous, self-absord, and gets a thrill out of Destroying his own people.....I saw him on Tavis Smiley show.....He couldnt even say "Black' kids like he was better than...I couldnt believe this man.....I use to think he was sooo sexy.....He didnt help "Blacks" he took advantage of us collectively as a "Whole",
Im not sure who are you trying to persuade with this....What has he done for people of "Color" but destroy them???
Yes "God" granted him "Motown" and gave him people with "Talent".. And he abuse them a gift from "God" above.
Berry Gordy..didnt give them "Talent"...DNA
But he's sooooo "Narcissistic" and taking credit for something that could have gotten a lot of our people out of "Bondage".... "Blacks" condition.....He only wanted it to benefit him. Money is the root.
All you damn fools bashing berry need to STFU. if not for berry there would be NO MOTOWN. and these people arent just saying this shit to sound good. I grew up in the 60s and Motown made us as a african american people PROUD. if your not then that your own dumb ass fault. even the whites embraced Motown. so you fools need to eat crow. and shut your pie holes because you dont know nothing except crap you read.
He was a hypocrit,,,he did stuff to ppl he wouldn't want done to himself. He stole all of Eddie's rights just so the man could leave and go on his own. Yuk!!! That's a HYPOCRIT!!! Nothing to be proud of. Nothing!!!
What would you expect from a street guy that eventually made it beyond big? Sure, he was a real prick, he had to be. He knew what he was going to be dealing with! It was not his fault that Diana stepped it up, he fell for her trap and she got pregnant. Eddie Kendricks was the 3rd greatest artist on the label, period, but, it was not BG's fault he was bad with money and caroused around, and lost his home. No angel, excellent music industry man. He did what he had to do to win.
IF YOU "TRULY" Knew the real "BERRY GORDY" you would not be CONGRADUALATED him on ANYTHING,,,,, DO Research on "DETROIT" then you will know the "REAL" BERRY GORDY, DIANNA ROSS and SMOKEY ROBINSON.....I don't mean to sound like I'm hating... Look up Florence Ballard, Eddie Kendricks Interviews and see who Berry Gordy is... Why the Music Industry is sooo "Violent"
why the hell would we wanna hear what flo or eddie had to say? Berry made stars long before eddie or flo..such as Jackie Wilson who was before Motown..YOu damn fools only know what you read on the outside. you dont know shit about what really went down except from a few damn disgrunted artists.
why dont you go to HELL>.if not for berry..no supremes. no mircales no stevie wonder no mary wells no marvin gaye NO jackson five meaning NO damn michael jackson..so if hes the devil himsel then thank god for HIM! if hes the devil what does that make you? and angel?
this is my opinion and if you didnt like it dont fucking read it. Can you stop me from putting comments up no so stop being a immature baby you asshole. Grow the fuck up. Your probably ten times older than me so act your age and not your shoe size. I can say whatever I want and if you reply back to this it shows me you have no life. I wont comment back to you because I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU LOL LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!
AGE has nothing to do with it......"Blacks" can't do nothing right.... But have "Lust", be Lovers of "Money" and most of all "Downrate" each other, instead of helping or a "Journey for Change" anything less than that is a "Loser"....Feel sorry for that........
To Mr Barry Gordy. They dont make them like you anymore. Full respecks to you. I grew up in the the 60s and it broke my heart when Mowtown finished. I have the Video Yesterday, Today and Forever and i strongly reconmend any Mowtown fans to buy it. Its absoloutly brilliant, what a party they all threw for you, and they all did come back for YOU. Keep publishing them and i will keep on buying them. You deserve everything you get and more. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Congrats, Mr. Gordy! Your work changed music history, forever. You showed the world how beautiful we really are, something your 'critics' have never done. They're just a bunch of 2nd-rate, talentless whiners who identify with the failures of certain artists, due to the constant failures in their own lives, and their only recourse is to vent their pathetically petty frustrations in tawdry, poorly-sourced books & anonymous internet comment boards.
You know, I was just thinking the same thing! And I heard him say he was into 'health' and such matters. I am too! THAT, I beLIEVE is the SECRET behind how he is looking! It DOES have a bearing on how people 'look'!
I would like to comment on what happened to Don Cornelius's voice and his darkness of skin. He sounds like he sucked on a helium balloon. Has he been sick or something? I almost did not recognize him.
what a joke, he screwed all the songwriters, artists, and musicians out their royalties. Thats why Holland/Dozier/Holland left him. At least Smokey, Stevie, Nick & Val, and Marvin were smart enough not to get fleeced by this snake. You know what Jobete means? Joo-can-bet you aint gettin any money!
!!!!!! 1lIVE SO SWEET 2 FEEL IT 3 HUNGRY 4 SMILE AGAIN 5 BABYLON 6 LIKE TO PLAY 7EARTH PEOPLE 8 POTILOVE 9 JAH 10 TELL ME
how would u know Dreamgirls is written by some1 that was actually there... how can u draw that conclusion. as a matter of fact it was written by one of the most neutral of parties if it was florence then i would question but mary wilson come on history is written by the winners not the losers
berry gordy is a monumental american. dreamgirls was an insult to gordy, motown, black popular culture, and a disgrace to every african american artist in particular who participated in it, particularly jamie fox. dirty man??? whose truth are you reading when you see a movie or read a book? anybody it seens can write a book these days. unfortunately most books and films today are made for profit and not to tell the truth or lift people up.
i think everyone should just shut up..for real..were you there ? no..everyone thinks they know it all..whatever..only they know the truth..it was sad what happened to her...leave her be...no one really knows whatreally happened but the man upstairs and them...shit..aint saying don't give your comments but don't talk what you don't know..
Next Year its 50 years of Motown. Thank you Mr Berry Gordy for all the talented artist singers son writers The Funk Brothers and may more. No one WILL NEVER forget Motown Music. You have made so many dreams come true. You deserve every award on this planet. You sent out messages in all the songs that we hear. MOTOWN TODAY FOREVER ALWAYS. Respect to you Mr Gordy and cogratulation. Your number 1 Motown fan
Why do you freaks always, ALWAYS, come back to luridly centering on the late Supreme Florence Ballard's firing from the group and death? Let her freaking rest in goddamned peace, will you? Let it also be about the bigger picture of remembering all the Motown artists, and how because Berry and his record company were there for them to come to first, all their great talent had a home and shone. Jesus...
@italoman9 I did some research on Florence Ballard situation and it seems to me that when I was hearing one side, I thought Berry Gordy and Diana Ross was the reason for her getting kicked out of the group until I did my research I found out the other side of the story..
yes, alcohol did take it's toll but only on her liver, not her heart, silly, and if she wasn't fat then what killed her? the brown substance? i agree with maxine, look at florences body and find out what really happend.
Thank you Mr.Gordy for bringing talented black Artist with class because it's missing in today's music scene and I'm ashame of the stuff that I hear and see.I was watching the BET Awards Show, damn all the gum chewing, tattoos, and shagging pants was all over the damn place and it's hard to tell whose the Rapper or the R&B Artist because they're promoting this thug movement.
He didn't make any fuckin music 50 decades ago. All he did was add his name to songs that he didn't even write. What a crooked piece of shit! Berry Gordy is a LIVING LIAR!
If anyone wants the TRUTH about what went on with the original SUPREMES and the way they treated Flo Ballard. Read "ALL THAT GLITTERED" BY TONY TURNER. (I THINK BERRY GORDY HAD TOMMY KILLED SO HE WOULDNT HELP MARY WRITE HER BOOK AFTER FLO DIED)

I know that I am not alone when I say, " Thank you Mr. Gordy. I love you." I LOVE MOTOWN!

too bad you broke the "HEARTS" of your musicians berry and gave them no warning when you closed the doors to motown in '72 and moved to los angeles. James Jamerson and others drank them self to death from depression of not being able to no longer provide for their familes. People like Smokey and Diana were grateful...because he took care of them. Especially Diana.

You people call him a slave owner, and you listening to Motown music? The fuck outta here! Y'all are a bunch of hypocritical assholes!!

@MooseShady
It's all about the crab in the bucket mentality that most Black people have. They are their worst critic of each other and their worst enemy. They always have to find something wrong or something negative to say about another Black person who has made it to the top. And Black people wonder why they as a whole haven't progressed enough. It's not only just the White man oppressing Black people, but Black people are doing it to themselves with that crab in the bucket mentality.
tommiexander 1 year ago
@tommiexander WTF are you injecting racism into this matter. This is not a Black on Black issue, this is about Berry Gordy who built Motown into highly respected label in the history of music. However, when you ran a successful company like Gordy did, there's bound to be some dissections with others people. I'm just responding to these idiots who called him slave driver, pimp and all that baloney. He made stars out of most of them. (continued)
MooseShady 1 year ago
@MooseShady Some of stars who didn't panned out well at Motown, wind up working for Gordy because they were that loyal to him and they thank him for giving them a break. Florence could have work it out with Gordy when she got fired from her group. Unfortunately, her jealously and bitterness towards Diana and added her drinking problem destroyed her in the end.
MooseShady 1 year ago
07mrsrod.....Florence Ballard had her share of problems and very very sad to say, ended up as a disruptive alcoholic pain in the ass, according to most accounts. Despite many statements from those who were there that she had an Aretha-like voice, all her recorded solos fall far short of a classic R&B voice, Aretha or otherwise. Just because she founded the group, doesn't mean that she had the most commercial voice or that a group with her as lead, would have succeeded or had any longevity.
mhertz25 1 year ago
@mhertz25 Florence had her share of problems. However, her being regarded as a pain is overblown. She stood up for herself. She didn't take no bull. Yes, her solo album is less than marvelous. Maybe you should listen to her Motown recordings when she was still in good spirits (like "Ain't That Good News" from the Sam Cooke tribute album the Supremes did). By time she went solo (by default), she was a broken women. Motown had wrenched her spirits. They abused her emotionally
proverbs1824 1 year ago
@mhertz25 and finacially. Gordy not only ripped off the artists; he also ripped off the public. But, it would be years before we would find out that the Supremes records after Florence left, would not really be Supremes records, or the Vandellas, or Marvellettes, and the list goes on. Except for solo artists and male groups (with the exception of the Four Tops), we got the Andantes with the lead singers of these groups. The artists got ripped off, and so did the writers.
proverbs1824 1 year ago
@mhertz25 Why do you think people like Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown? Gordy and his but-kissin' side kick (Smokey Robinson) were rakin' in all the cash; and, everyone else was getting chicken feed.

@bholyway I guess he pimped them right into becoming (millionaires) and secured their futures. It does not matter as much how you start - what really matters is how you finish. He laid the foundation for their success. Most aspiring black singers from that era would have killed for the opportunity to sign with Motown.
uniqque14u 1 year ago
@uniqque14u I honestly don't think most of them became millionaires. (please check that info) neither did he "secure" their future. Most black aspiring singer did want to sign with Motown for two reasons, One they didn't know any better, and two they didn't have anything better. It doesn't make it (him) right. Very few artist from motown became millionaires nor would sign the same contract again. Berry looked after MR. Gordy. Believe it.

blkshepherd 1 year ago
@blkshepherd her name is Diane Ross actually. This an old debate. I don't care anymore but... There would have been many of these artist who got their talent from God and hard work. alibatley28 1 year ago
Greed sucks.
rudielor 1 year ago

They're just a bunch of 2nd-rate, talentless whiners who identify with the failures of certain artists, due to the constant failures in their own lives, and their only recourse is to vent their pathetically petty frustrations in tawdry, poorly-sourced books & anonymous internet comment boards.
You, Mr. Gordy, are The Man!:)

Berry Gordy is truly a King Maker. His stable of artists put Detroit and Motown on the Map! Give that Gentleman a Standing "O"!!

its amazing how good he looks...but half of his artist are sick or dead! How crazy is that?
browngal1709 2 years ago
You know, I was just thinking the same thing! And I heard him say he was into 'health' and such matters. I am too! THAT, I beLIEVE is the SECRET behind how he is looking! It DOES have a bearing on how people 'look'!

I would like to comment on what happened to Don Cornelius's voice and his darkness of skin. He sounds like he sucked on a helium balloon. Has he been sick or something? I almost did not recognize him.

behind the scenes my arse! hes more famous than alot of the artists he had on his label! living legend though.

what a joke, he screwed all the songwriters, artists, and musicians out their royalties. Thats why Holland/Dozier/Holland left him. At least Smokey, Stevie, Nick & Val, and Marvin were smart enough not to get fleeced by this snake. You know what Jobete means? Joo-can-bet you aint gettin any money!

It's like time warp, how can he look so good at his age? I thought he was dead.
Most of his artists are dead or senile.

I'm doing my History Fair Project on Berry Gordy and he is SO cool. Also, he says that he didn't do that crazy stuff that Dreamgirls portrayed.
planetlucy 3 years ago
how would u know Dreamgirls is written by some1 that was actually there... how can u draw that conclusion. as a matter of fact it was written by one of the most neutral of parties if it was florence then i would question but mary wilson come on history is written by the winners not the losers

not really.
pianoblues101 3 years ago
berry gordy is a monumental american. dreamgirls was an insult to gordy, motown, black popular culture, and a disgrace to every african american artist in particular who participated in it, particularly jamie fox. dirty man??? whose truth are you reading when you see a movie or read a book? anybody it seens can write a book these days. unfortunately most books and films today are made for profit and not to tell the truth or lift people up.

Jesus...
italoman9 3 years ago 3
@italoman9 I did some research on Florence Ballard situation and it seems to me that when I was hearing one side, I thought Berry Gordy and Diana Ross was the reason for her getting kicked out of the group until I did my research I found out the other side of the story..
stevieplez2 2 years ago
yes, alcohol did take it's toll but only on her liver, not her heart, silly, and if she wasn't fat then what killed her? the brown substance? i agree with maxine, look at florences body and find out what really happend.

Thank you Mr.Gordy for bringing talented black Artist with class because it's missing in today's music scene and I'm ashame of the stuff that I hear and see.I was watching the BET Awards Show, damn all the gum chewing, tattoos, and shagging pants was all over the damn place and it's hard to tell whose the Rapper or the R&B Artist because they're promoting this thug movement.
mightyblack1 3 years ago 2
He didn't make any fuckin music 50 decades ago. All he did was add his name to songs that he didn't even write. What a crooked piece of shit! Berry Gordy is a LIVING LIAR!

If anyone wants the TRUTH about what went on with the original SUPREMES and the way they treated Flo Ballard. Read "ALL THAT GLITTERED" BY TONY TURNER. (I THINK BERRY GORDY HAD TOMMY KILLED SO HE WOULDNT HELP MARY WRITE HER BOOK AFTER FLO DIED)
