  • great song

  • What a heart-warming beautiful song. Between their voices and harmony they had an amazing sound.

  • The Beach Boys rock on....saw them a few years ago in Indy....miss the ones who had passed though....suzi

  • @TheTeaBaby,

Yep, gotta grow OLD, but you don't gotta grow UP!!!

How many questions in that tune? Answered them all, "YEP!!!"

  • Pussicat Dolls-When I grow up: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Beach Boys: When I grow up YEEESSS

    This is real music, guys.

  • Holy crap, my teacher in Pre-AP Precalculus played this before class and I immediately tried to scribble down the lyrics. While I couldn't quite find the song with my scribbled lyrics (I'd thought I was lost), I just typed "when will I be a man" randomly just a few moments ago and BAM I found gold.

  • My mother used to see these guys perform locally before they made it big. She was so in love with Dennis Wilson that she named me after him. I remember these songs so well from my childhood. The first time I watched Men Of A Certain Age (shouldn't have been cancelled) I was thrilled & delighted to hear this as the theme song!

  • Doesn't anyone want to give Murray some credit, too?

  • i herd their songs in "Look who's talking"

  • The Beach Boys , & the Four Seasons forever . ,,,, Australia .

  • 59 Skyliner Tourqouise on top... White on the bottom...

  • See, the Beach Boys were so good, even an outtake like this one sounds better than the finished product of a whole lot of other bands. I especially liked another outtake track they did with Murry's deathless "I'm a genius too" pronouncement. The Beach Boys weren't afraid to let you look behind the curtain.

  • 0:03 "record that muthafucka"

  • Pink pants.

  • Oh man, the 64 Grand Prix....

  • WITHOUT A PADDLE FTW! lol

  • Reminds me of 'Look who's talking' :) so cute!

  • First time I heard this was on "Look Who's Talking". Love this song.

  • Back when Mike and Brian made magic together.

  • 6 people are not men

  • This song reminds me of how old I am....seems like yesterday this was on the radio in my 67 Impala....yikes ! Thanks for uploading.

  • This is such a timeless classic of a song. Love it so much. Check my news program, if you all have the time.

  • Damn those Beatles!

  • Brian grow up and lift up your skirt and grow some balls and get rid of that golddigging piece of shit wife Melinda who would never be with you if you were not who you are.

  • Went out to eat with my wife and the young gal at the place said " Sir do need the senior discount tonight " SHIT ! 50, 55, 60.... what will be.

  • I don't give a shit which band it's more "correct" to prefer, I'll enjoy listening to a Beach Boys song over a Beatles song any day of the week. Sorry.

  • @blackhorse099 Thats fine, it's for you to choose, wouldn't do for us all to like the same thing.

  • YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!

  • This song reminds me of the movie called Look Who's Talking.

  • great song

  • Can I just say that its DEFINITELY Mike on lead with Brian on falsetto.......you would have to be deaf not to realise this!

  • Beach boys forever.

  • Great and underated song.

  • good harmony!beats the beatles by a gazillion!

  • This sounds 10000 times better in mono...

  • LOVE!! just saw them last weekend...

  • LOVE!!

  • No group will ever be able to capture their sound , friggen luv it .

  • 50 , 53, 55, 60... When I grow up.

  • Men of a Certain Age

  • 5 people who are still in their 1st childhood.

  • 5 people grew up and turned out gay

  • I love Brian's key changes. Fortunate that Mike Love didn't blow them.

  • @Azishome Hate to burst your bubble, but the lead is Al Jardine on "When I grow up to be a man", Pretty sure.

  • I`m pretty sure Mike Love and Brian are doing the lead vocals on this song.Check out "Beach Boys Ready Steady Go 1964" to watch them doing it live.

  • @Thirsty2 You are right. How could i miss that ? Its Clearly Mike singing lead, with Brian doing falsetta. Thanks for the correction. Thirsty

  • @jjs499 What, you can't just make a comment without challenging me? "Hate to burst your bubble." We all have various amounts and forms of information, some of it erroneous. It's guys with your attitude that make trying to enjoy YouTube tedious. Now, the notorious Wikipedia says Brian and Mike Love shared the lead. The lead sounded like Mike Love to me, so I made my comment. Sorry it didn't meet with your approval.

  • 5 people aren't men

  • Gosh, I hear these guys and it takes me back to my youth... and good times! Makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Reminds me of my family and how close we were! God love my family and everybody!

  • great song

  • I heard this song on "Look who's talking" when I was a very little girl, and omg, i know the lyrics without knowing english

  • My absolute favorite Beach Boys song - a classic!!

  • Great tune, one of my favourites by the Boys.

  • Dowwnload the audio from this video at tubepull doht cohm.

  • I need to know the harmony of this track.........

  • The genius of this band was their vocal harmonies. Can anyone out there name one band, from the last 50 years, whose harmonies even came close to these guys?

  • @motorcityquig The Osmonds, The Cowsills, The Jackson 5. Looks like the secret is to start a band with brothers and relatives!

  • @motorcityquig The Four Freshmen, but they were beyond 50 years ago. Hmmm...can't think of anyone else.

  • @motorcityquig

    beattles?

  • @pufixas The Beatles had nothing on the Beach Boys in my opinion.

  • @blink182scotty Well the Beatles did have more number 1 songs.

  • @motorcityquig Coming close were bands like the Hollies ,the Tremeloes or the Buffoons (if you have ever heard of them) .

  • @motorcityquig: I can't. Their harmonies just give me goose bumps.

  • @motorcityquig Fleet Foxes definitely come close.

  • @motorcityquig The Association. Although, Beach Boy harmonies are quite superb! ;)

  • @motorcityquig csny was awfully good

    simon and garfunkel too

  • @demonzeez The Beach Boys' harmonies stand out because they are four part. The only other groups I can recall pulling that off are the Four Seasons and the Four Freshman. The Four Freshman were the musical nspiration for Brian Wilson.

  • @motorcityquig the beatles

  • Brian is the voice at :05 who says "roll that mother f$%^er.

  • great song

  • You young whippersnapper of a dog, you quit barfing on my lawn !!

  • dedicated to the larte, gate Gary Coleman

  • Fantastic Beach Boys tune,

  • The Beach Boys are the best band in American music history.

Their songs were good, clean, and well, fun, fun, fun.

    Thanks for posting this classic.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill Haha. Good and clean? They were sex-crazed, drug addicts with mental illness and death following them everywhere.... AND I LOVE IT.

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill its true but listen to how good it is i wonder when i grow up

  • I like this song while playing during the movie "Look Who's Talking"!! Blast from the past movie, but perfect fit with the Beach Boys!!!

  • I love this song. Got married recently and had a video of pics of my wife and I and this is the song I had when it showed pics of me and my family.

  • BEACH BOYS FOREVER!!

  • good song, I'm sad to learn in the comments that this song has been bastardized by being co-opted into a sitcom

  • That intro studio jibberish just further highlights how seconds later they sing like angels.

  • which disc was it on, because i have the set and the track i have it was in mono not stereo

  • Did anybody catch the F word at the beginning?

  • that's mike love who say's MF. LOL

  • Looks as if Dennis had cheater slicks on the rear of his '63 coupe....

  • Screw the lame "binaural" mix with that horrible separation. This stereo mix is what's up.

  • Played the snot out of this song growing up with my best friend Roger, who left us 18 years ago... miss ya, brother... ;-)

  • The bridge doesn't work. Just doesn't fit the song. But hey what do i know...

  • That sounds like Brian saying "roll that melonfarmer".

  • @shelly10538 who doesnt love melons? those farmers must be wealthy. its a set market..

  • Pretty thought provoking lyrics that in my opinion

were ahead of themselves, but quite relevant!

  • Timeless music.

  • i love how in the beginning someone goes- SHHHHH really loud... lol

  • Avant-garde!

  • Every so often it strikes me afresh just how ludicrously amazing the Beach Boys were. The arrangement and performances are all so perfect. And wherever Brian goes there is always something melancholy in his music, the end where Mike sings "won't last forever" and Brian replies "that's kinda sad" only gets more poignant as time goes on. They were all in their early 20s and already thinking about the future where things have ended or have gone wrong, not an isolated example in their music.

  • @retread01 Great bit of commentary there, sir.

  • I have this recording on a CD, sent to me by a feloow 'Surf Music ' fan.

    God Bless 'The Wilson Brothers':-)

  • Always a classic, a song that made me grow up...I think Brian wilson spoke for all young men in the Western world back in 1964.

  • @DSVOP dont grow up too much, gotta have fun ;) but i totally get your point.

  • Roll that motherfucker haha

  • only a true hater could not love this music.... hey I have a pretty good playlist that is ever growing, check out sometime..

  • Love the 'Bird, 'Vette & Grand Prix on the album cover!

  • I'm being somewhat emotional but I love this song!

  • love this song, first heard it in "look whos talking"

  • same here :P

  • Beach Boys Forever!

  • HAHAHA Did anyone here him curse at 0:05,lol. ROLL DAT MUTHAFUCKA!!!

  • I didnt know about this song until it became the theme song for the new show "Men Of A Certain Age", now I love it!

  • Same here my friend, great show, great cast and feel good factor.

  • good ass show

  • @MrOggy77 rays got good taste with the classics :)

  • @MrOggy77 I always though it could be a tv theme

  • @MrOggy77 Awesome song AND show!

  • I heard this on look whos talking and i was like what the fuck.

  • I grew up and still this song is in my heart...Beach Boys 4ever...Cheers from Venice, ITALY

  • LOL! The Boys in matching blue hangin' out by their Vettes & T- Birds!! Is that "IN THE DAY" or WHAT?

The best Beach Boy song ever? I don't know...but definitely the most underrated, and quite possibly my favorite.

  • This is really nit picking, but I distinctly remember Carl Wilson playing some very cool chords during the instrumental break, similar to what was done in "Don't Worry Baby".

  • man I wish I could go back to 14,15,16.....

  • Dont we all man...dont we all

  • I was totally mesmerized when I first heard this pop masterpiece. The outro is hauntingly beautiful, one of my favorites.

  • 14,15,16,17 I wish.....

  • all time classic song...

  • How on earth can you say this is a bad mix? It just shows how in a recording session they chatted a bit and then SANG THEIR HEARTS OUT. This is America's BEST. Sung by the BEST.

  • This song should be on "Harpsichord Hero"!

  • Hey there traderfiles, this excellent video post -- and your annotations, and the fine commentary from your commentators -- add up to something quite great. Many thanks.

  • ah the good old times

  • You're right space. In the original single, I think they faded the tune out around 21, 22,23....On this studio cut, I noticed it as well. I love the lines:

"Will my kids be proud or think their ol' man's really a square. When they're out havin fun, yeah will I still might have a share. Will I love my Wife, for the rest of my life? When I grow up to be a Man." Good shit Mike and Brian. Good shit.

  • "won't last forever...it's kinda sad"

  • These guys were nothing but amazing. Almost like the Disney of music.

  • Ahh,breezy.A classic. The first human sounds an alien could hear.

  • me and my dad loves beach boys

  • My song, I'm going on 57 and i'm still a man preserving my childhood. Surf Music Rules..thougth Quentin Tarantino thinks its childish...QT..love you're films.

  • Fabulous. Great tune. The page with &fmt=18 at the end of the URL does play in stereo.

    mh

  • Will I joke around and still dig those sounds? Still dig those, rockin those sounds?

  • ...34 35 This is the first time I heard them count ages that high the record fades out before that .

  • I wonder who it was that said " roll that motherfucker" at 0:05, haha i just caught that, funny!

  • You're right. I heard it after the third play. Now who said that?

  • SouthJerseyMatt :

I wonder who it was that said " roll that motherfucker" at 0:05, haha i just caught that, funny!

Brian..you can hear the slight slur in his voice (he started to talk out of the side of his mouth around the time this was recorded...read "Heroes and Villans" , a great book about them)

  • @traderfiles Sounds like Dennis. Certainly wasn't Mike Love!

  • @SouthJerseyMatt SOUNDS LIKE MIKE LOVE DROPPIN THE F BOMB

  • @SouthJerseyMatt dennis??

  • @SouthJerseyMatt lol i think thats brianXD

  • @SouthJerseyMatt

Nope. It was "roll that by the phone"

  • summer along time ago nice to see that this music is still here and liked by people now happy days

  • I really wish music still sounded like this.

  • me too :(

  • same here

  • I love the chord where they say "when I grow up..."

    What a pleasant surprise! .

The melody during the pre-chorus is just classic.

  • I love this song a lot! Backstreet boys sang this live really good as well!

  • hate to say it but...it's so TRUE! Brian and the boys knew what the future holds! I'ma dad now and heck it's RIGHT ON!!! if your lucky this will happen to YOU!!!!!

  • in a perfect world this would have a million + hits. awesome song made by a genius.

  • the beach boys is one person?

or are you referring to the lyricist??

  • Song by Brian, lyrics by Brian and Mike - produced by Brian

  • four part harmony to perfection!!

  • To listen to this is beeing in heaven

  • Who wants to grow up? Why? No thank you.

  • Thanks so much for posting this, I love this song. BTW This is stereo 1960s style, see Jan and Dean, etc.

  • CHRIST!! Get your big asses off that Vett!!!

  • One little problem...this ain't stereo. Maybe you tried to upload a stereo file, but it's coming down from 'tube in flat mono.

  • Click on the link in the description>

  • well...my point is that it ain't stereo. Just because there's a mono mix minus on the left and a mono vocal comp on the right, doesn't mean it's stereo.

  • Ah, I gotcha now.

  • @moproducer There's a new stereo mix that came out in 2009. Check out ITunes under When I Grow Up/She Knows Me Too Well single re-mix. BOTH IN TRUE STEREO! Let me know what you think.

  • amazing.

  • Very apropos song for today's pop culture which frequently acclaims the foolish, youthful behavior as an ideal.

  • Great song.

  • Fifty-five and still trying.
