Twenty years ago when I was looking for a car I seriously thought of that model of Sonata, because it seemed like an amazing value for such a large car. A lot of people complained about the so-called plain styling but I actually really liked the lines of the old Sonata. What scared me away from buying one was that in those days, Hyundai's reputation was not the best--though today I wonder if I made a mistake. Seems like those old Sonatas really were good cars.
WOOHOO! Hyundai! I used to own a 1985 Pony GLS, and that thing ran forever! All I did was replace the cassette headunit with a Panasonic and installed Sony speakers into those little 4"inch speakers they came with! The car had the 5 speed manual trans. and also came with those weird covers over the rear window. The car went thru 2 alternators, the fan belt broke while on the highway, but other than that, it survived -30 Canadian Winters, +40 Summers, and make the trip from Edm to Van flawlessly.
@jakesaintsrow123 no, I bought it after i crashed my 1993 Chrysler Imperial due to being T-Boned by a drunk driver. I bought it in 1999 after my crash. The car had no rust, and was in nearly perfect condition. I did make a video about it in and old Hi8 analog camcorder, but as we all know, that was before the days of Youtube! That Hyundai outlasted my other car, a Ford Escort, 1986, which the 1.9L engine blew. :)
What's funny is it's become an exclusive car in its own right; so many of these were sent to the crusher by the end of the 1990s that they're about as rare as most Bentleys.
@goodman325 I've never owned one but a friend let me borrow his 02 elantra. While I was driving down the highway when it rained the wiper motor died so I was halfway to my destination and I could not see anything.
@bmwmsport11 These old Hyundai's were really crap, even the 02's. The new one's are far from crap now. Hyundai had listened to consumers and now they build high quality, reliable cars and it's about time.
man these were the crappy hyundais. new ones are still crappy but alot better. i guess i think hyundais are crappy because of the cars they made in the 90's
Not bad, not bad at all. You presented this very wel. I enjoyed watching it, looking forward to more videos from you. I am just getting started with with creating video content and it is not as easy as it looks... well... its not as easy as YOU make it look. Nice work.
Great review Kyle. I had a late 90's Hyundai Elantra that was junk so I'd really written the brand off as not good quality. Then the new version of the Elantra came out and I love it. My fiancé just bought a 2012 Hyundai Sonata GLS. Awesome car. Hyundai has came such a long way. They are great cars now!!
Hyundai had definitely stepped their game up. Their cars went from being absolute crappy economy cars to something you'd actually be proud to bring home. From the late '80s through the early '90s, my mother had 2 Excels, and I remember all the mechanical and electrical issues she always had with them. You don't hear of that with Hyundai anymore. You don't even hear of them having major or mass recalls, either. Nice job, Hyundai!
Hyundai has made the greatest improvement out of any car brand....especially impressed with the Genisis and Eqqus, who knows what great stuff hyundai will bring out in the future.
is it me or did pre-1994 Hyundais looked the same, especially between 1990-1994. This Sonata looks like a Lantra from the front and Lantra looks like an Excel from the front and it is similar to the S-Coupe.
good GOD you were right kyle they have come a long way. hyundai , late 80's to early 90's were junk. theyve earned their stripes. found out what tehy were doing wrong. and got almost all of it straightened out now :)
Wow talk about under the radar I didn't even know they sold Hyundai in this country till 2000-ish... Kinda looks like a cross between a Toyota Cressida and a Ford Contour from the early 90s that someone tried to put 3nd generation Jetta taillights on and kinda had to melt them to fit on it
@saabkyle04 Wow! Bajabusta commented on this video! Thanks for posting this video. I had never seen a really old Hyundai Sonata before. Is it wierd or does this car actually look cool on the exterior? Oh well... bajabusta's review of this car is to the right in the recommended videos. Anyway... thanks again for this video! I subscribed to you and bajabusta ;-)
The reason 80s and 90s Hyundais are so rare today is not because nobody bought them, it's because the engines started to burn oil, blow smoke and wear out after only 100k miles.
I find the new Sonata isn't as nice as the last ones! I recently had two days of riding in one, and only the stereo system ROCKS! The rest of the car is a total disappointing letdown.
The 1990 one literally made my stomach hurt. Blech. Enormous strides on Hyundai's part, from a design that causes physical pain to a car I actually want.
Its amazing Hyundai is still offering luxury that other car company's don't have back then the BMW's and Jaguar's had electric seat belts and HYUNDAI!
@TheBruinsfan89 GM and Toyota are the 2 best brand sold period, both inline with each other, in my opinion, and Hyundai, Kia, and Daewoo are the worst. Sucks for people in Europe, thye dont get our awsome Chevys, they get rebadge Deawoos called chevys!!!
hyundais really are horrible cars nightmares.kias and hyundais are the worst vehicles u can get.i was just here to see what the guy had to say about hyundais lol.never get these cars old or new they have never and will never be good cars.i work at a auto shop and see hyndais and kias of all years here alot.boy u never wanna get any trans problems on hyundais they will make u poorer than u are now and the trans will go very soon.crap
I guess it isn't a bad car for the time, but it can't hold a candle to the Jetta or Passat of the same generation. Some of the technology in the Sonata is so...dated. I have a 1990 Jetta GLI Wolfsburg Edition that I have completely restored. My daily driver is a 1992 Passt GLX...2.0l 16V, 134 horsepower, and a host of features that really outshine the Camry, Sonata, Accord and other import competition of the time.
@pcressma the video isnt to compare it to other cars of that time it goes to show how much better they got and how much faster they did it then other car companies have. and if your saying the jetta is better then sonata from then it must meen hyundai put more effort and passion into their cars then other companies
Thanks for uploading this video about this Hyundai Sonata, SaabKyle04. I enjoyed your review and tour of this car including the comparison of the old and the new (2011) Sonatas, the differences between the two cars, and finally, the automatic seat belts. By the way, I have seen the video of the 1993 Nissan Altima with the electronic seat belts on your channel. Hope I can see more cars with that automatic seat belt on your channel, SaabKyle04. I have also subscribed to you for more car videos!
@cyberboy855 Agreed....the a/c console and the instrument cluster look like could have been pulled directly from a late 80's Toyota pickup---and the stereo (assuming its the original factory) and automatic seatbelts look like something you would have found in a early 90's Mitsubishi.
$14,000 for a new Sonata back then? Not too bad, I think the Hyundai Excel's were about $7,000. Look at a new Sonata, base price might start at about $25,000
My friend just got his license and his dad was able to pick one of these up from the Hyundai Dealership he manages for FREE! I mean, its not a very good car but it has 117.5k original miles and runs. Free.
i love hyundai and i love that you appriciate them as well, people are to blind to see how well hyundai is. i have a 2004 hyundai elantra gt sedan and its an amazing car the warranty's are amazing to my engine blew out because my sister never took care of it and they replaced the whole engine never had a problem after that since its been in my hands, o and people are still thinking toyota is better TODAY OVER A MILLION COROLLAS AND MATRIX VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECALLED HAHAHA
this is actually nice, but my grandparents had a 2004 Elantra VE, and boy was that a piece of shit. the bus was more appealing than that shitbox. they traded it for a 2011 Kia Sorento though, nice car.
@celsovera91 hyundai will or any other car for that matter will ever be close to mercedes benz standards because benz will allways be the first car ever made its has history and prestige
the car is incredible but I noticed that there´s something wrong with the direction and probably the axles need some fix because they were noisy (I recently did some reparation on the axles of my 96 tercel and the intial problem was similar), and also there was a minor leaking from the exhaust...
HOLY crap! Yes, this video shows how far Hyundai has come, but I just looked on your channel. Nearly 6500 subscribers. Wow, i subscribed way back before even 1000. Not only is Hyundai making huge strides, saabkyle04 is getting up there.
Great video as always Kyle! The new Sonatas are great(my sister has a 2010 Sonata) but it's great to see the older Hyundais as well. Gotta love that classic chime as well!
If someone gave me a choice to either have the 1990 Sonata vs the 2011, I'd go with the 1990. I seen an old man recently who laughed and told that the new cars look extremely ugly and would never buy one. Guess you do gain a lot of wisdom from age.
door dinger reminds me of our 87 hyundai excel my dad bought new. we sold the car in 95, when i was 5. i still remember being 4 or 5 and opening the drivers door on the inside for my mom.
I like that newer model Sonata, but on the inside, they seriously look like toyota. Everything from the seats, to the way the instument panel is laid out looks just like the toyota sedans.
Oh my god, thats a rare beauty! Ive seen older Accents and older Excels but never something like this! And in such good shape too!
I don't care what anyone has to say, I like Hyundai and always will. In fact, we might be getting an Elantra or Sonata from early 2000 or late 1990's when my mother decides to get a new used car.
I myself want a 2000-2005 Hyundai Accent manual!
If I had the money, id go across country to buy this.
its good to see that some people still take great care of their cars and don't abuse them. its not common to see 20+ year old cars at new car dealers in that shape. btw, that chime sounds a lot like the old Nissan chime
Up here in Canada the Hyundai Pony was one of the best selling eco-box cars in the mid 80's. Over 50,000 were sold. I love the new Sonata but there should be a V6 engine available.

flc2009 1 year ago
this is actually nice, but my grandparents had a 2004 Elantra VE, and boy was that a piece of shit. the bus was more appealing than that shitbox. they traded it for a 2011 Kia Sorento though, nice car.

celsovera91 1 year ago
@celsovera91 hyundai will or any other car for that matter will ever be close to mercedes benz standards because benz will allways be the first car ever made its has history and prestige

1bentley4ever 1 year ago 2
great vid men!!!
the car is incredible but I noticed that there´s something wrong with the direction and probably the axles need some fix because they were noisy (I recently did some reparation on the axles of my 96 tercel and the intial problem was similar), and also there was a minor leaking from the exhaust...
I´m wrong? tell me...
judacomadc 1 year ago
Speaking of retro Hyundais, I saw a Hyundai Stellar in a parking lot & I must say, it was not as good as this '90 Sonata!

I wish car companies would make more manuals in the United States. It looks like they're going down in production over the years.
visionimagify 1 year ago
If someone gave me a choice to either have the 1990 Sonata vs the 2011, I'd go with the 1990. I seen an old man recently who laughed and told that the new cars look extremely ugly and would never buy one. Guess you do gain a lot of wisdom from age.

it looks like a jetta

door dinger reminds me of our 87 hyundai excel my dad bought new. we sold the car in 95, when i was 5. i still remember being 4 or 5 and opening the drivers door on the inside for my mom.
gm1990ss 1 year ago
I like that newer model Sonata, but on the inside, they seriously look like toyota. Everything from the seats, to the way the instument panel is laid out looks just like the toyota sedans.
kendrickevans301 1 year ago
Wow sweet features for something of that age. Those automatic seatbelts are pretty cool.

If I had the money, id go across country to buy this.
clubcar98 1 year ago
i never seen a 1990 sonata i thought they only had excels in 1990 :O
crystalscan2002 1 year ago
These old Hyundai's had a LOT of problems. The most notorious was probably the Excel.
datboiwes3 1 year ago
its good to see that some people still take great care of their cars and don't abuse them. its not common to see 20+ year old cars at new car dealers in that shape. btw, that chime sounds a lot like the old Nissan chime

Up here in Canada the Hyundai Pony was one of the best selling eco-box cars in the mid 80's. Over 50,000 were sold. I love the new Sonata but there should be a V6 engine available.
