  • the transmission on the 1988-1994 Hyundai Sonata

    Transmission

    4-speed automatic

    5-speed manual

  • this is so cool that you found this...thanks for posting

  • Twenty years ago when I was looking for a car I seriously thought of that model of Sonata, because it seemed like an amazing value for such a large car. A lot of people complained about the so-called plain styling but I actually really liked the lines of the old Sonata. What scared me away from buying one was that in those days, Hyundai's reputation was not the best--though today I wonder if I made a mistake. Seems like those old Sonatas really were good cars.

  • WOOHOO! Hyundai! I used to own a 1985 Pony GLS, and that thing ran forever! All I did was replace the cassette headunit with a Panasonic and installed Sony speakers into those little 4"inch speakers they came with! The car had the 5 speed manual trans. and also came with those weird covers over the rear window. The car went thru 2 alternators, the fan belt broke while on the highway, but other than that, it survived -30 Canadian Winters, +40 Summers, and make the trip from Edm to Van flawlessly.

  • @EdmDude did you Buy it new in 1985? Today I Saw a red 80's Hyundai Pony

  • @jakesaintsrow123 no, I bought it after i crashed my 1993 Chrysler Imperial due to being T-Boned by a drunk driver. I bought it in 1999 after my crash. The car had no rust, and was in nearly perfect condition. I did make a video about it in and old Hi8 analog camcorder, but as we all know, that was before the days of Youtube! That Hyundai outlasted my other car, a Ford Escort, 1986, which the 1.9L engine blew. :)

  • What's funny is it's become an exclusive car in its own right; so many of these were sent to the crusher by the end of the 1990s that they're about as rare as most Bentleys.

  • I just found this video. very cool. i did not know hyundai was in the states this long

  • prefiero el de 1990 me gustas los clasicos

  • Is this like show car or is it for sale?

  • @ge90777 he owns all those cars..

  • Why???

  • mint!

  • @goodman325 I've never owned one but a friend let me borrow his 02 elantra. While I was driving down the highway when it rained the wiper motor died so I was halfway to my destination and I could not see anything.

  • @bmwmsport11 These old Hyundai's were really crap, even the 02's. The new one's are far from crap now. Hyundai had listened to consumers and now they build high quality, reliable cars and it's about time.

  • man these were the crappy hyundais. new ones are still crappy but alot better. i guess i think hyundais are crappy because of the cars they made in the 90's

  • @bmwmsport11 Have you ever owned a hyundai before?

never judge if you haven't tried. I think it's about time people smartened up and give some credit for Hyundai.

  • Nice oldcar

  • Beautiful car that survived cash for clunkers. Cool

  • That old thing is in amazing condition! The exterior can pass for a brand new car haha! im speechless.

  • why are these cars made in canada not in america

  • the engine on the 1988-1994 Hyundai Sonata

  • the transmission on the 1988-1994 Hyundai Sonata

    Transmission

    4-speed automatic

    5-speed manual

  • Great review Kyle. I had a late 90's Hyundai Elantra that was junk so I'd really written the brand off as not good quality. Then the new version of the Elantra came out and I love it. My fiancé just bought a 2012 Hyundai Sonata GLS. Awesome car. Hyundai has came such a long way. They are great cars now!!

  • Great old car ! , so many features for 1990 !!

  • thats a nice classy Sonata its in better condition than the 92 nissan Maxima SE If I still had the maxima, I would trade that in for that sonata.

  • @YoungOldSchoolRapper i would just take them off anyway

  • @YoungOldSchoolRapper so its easyer to get in and out

  • If you could find a 97 sonata I would give you a child

  • Hyundai had definitely stepped their game up. Their cars went from being absolute crappy economy cars to something you'd actually be proud to bring home. From the late '80s through the early '90s, my mother had 2 Excels, and I remember all the mechanical and electrical issues she always had with them. You don't hear of that with Hyundai anymore. You don't even hear of them having major or mass recalls, either. Nice job, Hyundai!

  • Did the older one come with leather?

  • Ughhh...timing belts can be a pain to replace

  • Hyundai has made the greatest improvement out of any car brand....especially impressed with the Genisis and Eqqus, who knows what great stuff hyundai will bring out in the future.

  • is it me or did pre-1994 Hyundais looked the same, especially between 1990-1994. This Sonata looks like a Lantra from the front and Lantra looks like an Excel from the front and it is similar to the S-Coupe.

  • i love 1990's cars

  • good GOD you were right kyle they have come a long way. hyundai , late 80's to early 90's were junk. theyve earned their stripes. found out what tehy were doing wrong. and got almost all of it straightened out now :)

  • Is it me, or does the rear end have a bit of Volvo in it?

  • Wow Electric seatbelt for '90 Sonata

  • @streesmut70 Those electric seat belts were common in those Asian cars back then

  • If '11 Sonata not have passenger power seat?

  • hahah total difference,sonata 2011 very cool!

  • the 1988-1994 Hyundai Sonata was assembled in

    Bromont, Quebec, Canada

    Ulsan, Korea

  • this is what i call proper engineering even after 21 years still working like new

  • @g37muflih More like 22, since the 1990 Sonata was made in late 89.

  • for me i love hyundai and i take them as another japaneses car manufacturer not korean one

  • hyundai and japanese cars are greatly biult cars

  • @g37muflih Yeah! Go Asians!

  • Wow talk about under the radar I didn't even know they sold Hyundai in this country till 2000-ish... Kinda looks like a cross between a Toyota Cressida and a Ford Contour from the early 90s that someone tried to put 3nd generation Jetta taillights on and kinda had to melt them to fit on it

  • @saabkyle04 Wow! Bajabusta commented on this video! Thanks for posting this video. I had never seen a really old Hyundai Sonata before. Is it wierd or does this car actually look cool on the exterior? Oh well... bajabusta's review of this car is to the right in the recommended videos. Anyway... thanks again for this video! I subscribed to you and bajabusta ;-)

  • Holy crap, six actual gauges. That key chime reminds me of the 89 Excel my father had when I was growing up.

  • Could it come with leather seats?

  • do a 1993 v6 sonata with 60k miles, 2 owners and looks clean for 1000$ is a good deal?

  • I been in my friends haundai 2010 it only had cloth

  • The reason 80s and 90s Hyundais are so rare today is not because nobody bought them, it's because the engines started to burn oil, blow smoke and wear out after only 100k miles.

  • I like your watch, Kyle, it looks quite similar to mine!

  • I find the new Sonata isn't as nice as the last ones! I recently had two days of riding in one, and only the stereo system ROCKS! The rest of the car is a total disappointing letdown.

  • Can you do a review on the all new corolla and if possible a nissan stanza?

  • The 1990 one literally made my stomach hurt. Blech. Enormous strides on Hyundai's part, from a design that causes physical pain to a car I actually want.

  • Wow that is very clean Sonata! Hey Kyle, I used to have 1989 Hyundai Sonata GL...its my very first car when I was younger!

  • what a hardcore basic lookin car lol

  • Its amazing Hyundai is still offering luxury that other car company's don't have back then the BMW's and Jaguar's had electric seat belts and HYUNDAI!

  • I like the old one better :P

  • whats the deal with seat belts back then?

  • This looks better than the 2011, but I hate all Hyundai, just crappy, ugly, turds. Not worth it.

  • Chevy is the best

  • Chevy is the best and hyundai are junk

  • @TheBruinsfan89 ya, no. definitely not happening :P

  • @TheBruinsfan89 GM and Toyota are the 2 best brand sold period, both inline with each other, in my opinion, and Hyundai, Kia, and Daewoo are the worst. Sucks for people in Europe, thye dont get our awsome Chevys, they get rebadge Deawoos called chevys!!!

  • i own hyundai excel 1991 and its very good , efficient and reliable

and its not crap at all

  • Comment removed

  • hyundais really are horrible cars nightmares.kias and hyundais are the worst vehicles u can get.i was just here to see what the guy had to say about hyundais lol.never get these cars old or new they have never and will never be good cars.i work at a auto shop and see hyndais and kias of all years here alot.boy u never wanna get any trans problems on hyundais they will make u poorer than u are now and the trans will go very soon.crap

  • wow look at the sonata now !

  • this car is junk all shitdai are junk chevy are the best cars out there

  • Hey could the 1990 Hyundai Sonata come with leather seats?

  • This looks like Stellar back on the days.

  • What is the old cars mileage

  • @Jakeman2164 they are but thats what makes hyundai much better now then any other car company out there

  • man i love the variety on your vids and thumbs up each one :D

  • Holy shit!! a real treasure!!

  • looked like a camry then, and now, what a piece of trailertrash tit licking dildosauce

  • Notice the brake booster and master cylinder mounted on the passengers' side, and the backwards engine (similar to some Honda and Renault products).

  • Cant you make a video about the 2005 chevrolet nubira/lacetti estate/optra cuz it would have been nice.

  • love my 06 sonata.

  • @concordenerd i got one to i love it its ausome. if i ever get another car its going to be 07 or 08 i love the sonata

  • GLS stands for goes like shit

  • Squeaky!!! Belt maybe.

  • I guess it isn't a bad car for the time, but it can't hold a candle to the Jetta or Passat of the same generation. Some of the technology in the Sonata is so...dated. I have a 1990 Jetta GLI Wolfsburg Edition that I have completely restored. My daily driver is a 1992 Passt GLX...2.0l 16V, 134 horsepower, and a host of features that really outshine the Camry, Sonata, Accord and other import competition of the time.

  • @pcressma the video isnt to compare it to other cars of that time it goes to show how much better they got and how much faster they did it then other car companies have. and if your saying the jetta is better then sonata from then it must meen hyundai put more effort and passion into their cars then other companies

  • omg!! is that cloth interior!!!!??

  • Looks kind of like a 1st Gen Acura Legend...

  • The old one looks way better than the new one which is one of the most ugliest cars for 2010.

  • Wow. its amazing how far Hyundai has come.

  • all right I have nothing aganst hyundai and they are reliable i like their 10 year 100,000 mile warranty they are alright with me

  • piece of shit old hyundais

  • Just noticed now, the new Accent and this old Sonata have the same chime!

  • That engine has alot of torque as compared to horsepower!

  • Thanks for uploading this video about this Hyundai Sonata, SaabKyle04. I enjoyed your review and tour of this car including the comparison of the old and the new (2011) Sonatas, the differences between the two cars, and finally, the automatic seat belts. By the way, I have seen the video of the 1993 Nissan Altima with the electronic seat belts on your channel. Hope I can see more cars with that automatic seat belt on your channel, SaabKyle04. I have also subscribed to you for more car videos!

  • why does the stock radio sound pretty damn good?!! :O

  • It's nice to see that someone took such nice care of this car. I love old cars, they're mor exciting to me than new ones

  • A survivor in great shape! Really awesome!

    Thanks for sharing, Kyle.

  • I love this car, everything you need, nothing more.

  • even back then, hyundai was imitating other car designs. parts of this model look like they're from honda/toyota/audi/volvo.

  • @cyberboy855 Agreed....the a/c console and the instrument cluster look like could have been pulled directly from a late 80's Toyota pickup---and the stereo (assuming its the original factory) and automatic seatbelts look like something you would have found in a early 90's Mitsubishi.

  • hey kyle did you ever get your hand smashed by a door you close car doors?

  • i think they are both great cars. if i had alot of money, i would get the new one. but i don't have alot of money so i would get the 20 year old one.

  • rear end looks EXACTLY liek a honda accord of the time! xD

  • $14,000 for a new Sonata back then? Not too bad, I think the Hyundai Excel's were about $7,000. Look at a new Sonata, base price might start at about $25,000

  • @talldude123 base price starts at 19 thousand or a lil over that for a 2011

  • do bmw m3 e46 reveiw plz

  • @ saabkyle04

If there is 2009 Hyundai Sonata, Can you do a test drive & review of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata in that location again?

  • Do you have a video of the Kia Koup?

  • @spencerleeb yes, look it up on the channel

  • @saabkyle04 Kyle what car did they trade this in for? Assuming it was an older couple.

  • @spencerleeb yes, he did that a little while ago. i think it is very harp lookin. i wouldn't mind at all driving one of those.

  • Hyundai is big now

    ______

Saabkyle you can do the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9? please :D

  • My friend just got his license and his dad was able to pick one of these up from the Hyundai Dealership he manages for FREE! I mean, its not a very good car but it has 117.5k original miles and runs. Free.

  • Like that old Sonata! much more character in older cars.

  • That Sonata look as new, My car has the same milage and only 4 years!

  • You are a great salesman and you may or may not realize it. But I am sure you chosen career path is gonna bore you out of your mind.

  • Wow that's an ugly car.

  • Kyle you and Bajabusta are like the kings of the car videos! Thank you guys!

  • @vettefreak89 Thanks bud I appreciate it!

  • @vettefreak89 got that right! haha. but really that is true. there videos are very good.

  • Look how long that shifter is? Where the korens compensating for something lol. The shifter in my genesis is way smaller.

  • i love hyundai and i love that you appriciate them as well, people are to blind to see how well hyundai is. i have a 2004 hyundai elantra gt sedan and its an amazing car the warranty's are amazing to my engine blew out because my sister never took care of it and they replaced the whole engine never had a problem after that since its been in my hands, o and people are still thinking toyota is better TODAY OVER A MILLION COROLLAS AND MATRIX VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECALLED HAHAHA

  • Do they have a Hyundai Grand Starex Limousine there? If they do, please make a video of one. Thanks!

  • a classic

  • this is actually nice, but my grandparents had a 2004 Elantra VE, and boy was that a piece of shit. the bus was more appealing than that shitbox. they traded it for a 2011 Kia Sorento though, nice car.

  • can you do a test drive of this one?

  • Can you make a videos of Honda pilot 2010?

Plz I just love that car

  • i bet you its rare to find another '90 sonata in really good condition

  • do you the remember the hyundai excel? hyundai went from geo standards to almost mercedes standards.

  • @celsovera91 hyundai will or any other car for that matter will ever be close to mercedes benz standards because benz will allways be the first car ever made its has history and prestige

  • wow this must have been one of the first couple hyundais

  • Hyundai has come a LOOOOOOOOOONG way!

  • great vid men!!!

the car is incredible but I noticed that there´s something wrong with the direction and probably the axles need some fix because they were noisy (I recently did some reparation on the axles of my 96 tercel and the intial problem was similar), and also there was a minor leaking from the exhaust...

    I´m wrong? tell me...

  • Speaking of retro Hyundais, I saw a Hyundai Stellar in a parking lot & I must say, it was not as good as this '90 Sonata!

  • i have a roadtest of a 1992 version of this thing when it was new!!

  • @bajabusta Dang haha, I'll have to look that up that's awesome!

  • HOLY crap! Yes, this video shows how far Hyundai has come, but I just looked on your channel. Nearly 6500 subscribers. Wow, i subscribed way back before even 1000. Not only is Hyundai making huge strides, saabkyle04 is getting up there.

  • @SomeComAddict Wow thanks man I really appreciate that!! You are so right about that!

  • great shape yes :P But doesn't negate the fact it's a piece of shit.

  • looks like a volvo, but at least the glass headlamps don't fog up like today's plastic headlamps

  • The car is in amazing shape, great review of an older car that looks like the owner took really good car of the car.

  • its funny how it all most looks like a ford on the inside even down to the radio lol

  • Only in the south and non winter climate's can you get one that nice anymore.....

  • Great video as always Kyle! The new Sonatas are great(my sister has a 2010 Sonata) but it's great to see the older Hyundais as well. Gotta love that classic chime as well!

  • the hyundai excel!!

  • hahah my mom used to have this it was a peace of shit allways gave us trouble but my moms friend has the new sonata limited omg and i love it

  • it only has 78,00 miles cause it couldn't make any more LOL thumbs up if u agree!! :)

  • @fatbradlehs It's funny because nobody gave you a thumbs up.

  • Wow, cannot believe that is 20 years old, looks unbeliveably modern and technological for a year old car!

  • @EDP407 20*

  • my mom has the same exact 2010 sonata, she says that she loves it!! she even said that its better than her old Mercedes Ml320.

  • I wish car companies would make more manuals in the United States. It looks like they're going down in production over the years.

  • If someone gave me a choice to either have the 1990 Sonata vs the 2011, I'd go with the 1990. I seen an old man recently who laughed and told that the new cars look extremely ugly and would never buy one. Guess you do gain a lot of wisdom from age.

  • it looks like a jetta

  • what a cool car

  • door dinger reminds me of our 87 hyundai excel my dad bought new. we sold the car in 95, when i was 5. i still remember being 4 or 5 and opening the drivers door on the inside for my mom.

  • I like that newer model Sonata, but on the inside, they seriously look like toyota. Everything from the seats, to the way the instument panel is laid out looks just like the toyota sedans.

  • Wow sweet features for something of that age. Those automatic seatbelts are pretty cool.

  • Oh my god, thats a rare beauty! Ive seen older Accents and older Excels but never something like this! And in such good shape too!

I don't care what anyone has to say, I like Hyundai and always will. In fact, we might be getting an Elantra or Sonata from early 2000 or late 1990's when my mother decides to get a new used car.

I myself want a 2000-2005 Hyundai Accent manual!

If I had the money, id go across country to buy this.

  • i never seen a 1990 sonata i thought they only had excels in 1990 :O

  • These old Hyundai's had a LOT of problems. The most notorious was probably the Excel.

  • its good to see that some people still take great care of their cars and don't abuse them. its not common to see 20+ year old cars at new car dealers in that shape. btw, that chime sounds a lot like the old Nissan chime

  • i bet bob maberry hyundi is happy to have you around.

  • I think you should really do other cars besides Hyundai. We all know you are doing hyundai because you have a Genesis Coupe.

  • @porsche103 hahaha did you not notice the 793 other videos he has? Also this is his 1st Hyundai video in like 2 months.

  • seem like a publicity for hyundai

  • Up here in Canada the Hyundai Pony was one of the best selling eco-box cars in the mid 80's. Over 50,000 were sold. I love the new Sonata but there should be a V6 engine available.
