hi adam... in this video i can see their is alot of smock coming from the fire ..... how would you control it? as when i go out i always get a face full every where i sit
I just had a Mountain House breakfast and checked the zipper pouch as a extra water container after rinsing it out. I was surprised at how much pressure it took to pop the seal which had no leaks prior to me popping the bag open. If you use another container to measure the water it could easily be used to store/chemically treat water.
Because of Irene I haven't had power all day. I just grubbed on some Mountain House Beef Strog. Heated up the water with my MSR Pocket Rocket. Good stuff!
also on the coleman chili...if you add the flavor packet after the food is tender..if ther is to much water left over after cooking you can spill some out, then add the flavor packet and it sould be just how you want it....E2E rocks
i found atleast for me ... a little less water and a little more time for the coleman meals ..and i do like the smaller 1 serving size for backpacking, not for the food container itself but for the amount of water i have to bring
MSR makes a folding spoon which gives some extra length and doesn't require you to sink your hand into the bag to get your food out. It keeps my hand from getting food on it from the bag and keeps my dirty camping hands out of my food.
i did a taste test with mnt house, wise and backpackers pantry the backpackers pantry had the best flavor in my opinion and was cheaper just my 2 cents
I prefer the MH food as well. Insanely high in sodium but you'll need that to replenish lost electrolytes from hiking or working. Not recommended to eat too often though but great for preppers, hikers, and the bug out bag. Don't let Ace try any of that stuff, ha.
I use the Mountain house a LOT when camping, hunting, hiking, etc. Not a big fan of the Coleman. If you haven't tried the Mountain Oriental Chicken and Seafood Chowder you are missing out. These two are really good IMO. All of them are good however and I haven't found one that I haven't liked.
@equip2endure Hey Adam, Thanks for this I saw the Coleman didn't know much about it so left it sit. I guess It was a good choice as the MH seems to be a better value. I was excited when Walmart started carrying MH but it seems like the might be switching over to the Coleman :( Or they were just sold out of the MH. Anyway thanks, Oh any idea how the calories compare South west chili to south west chili?
Man that's a great site, Lots of space, not a lot of ground foliage. Looks like you might even have a clearing off to stage right. Makes me wish I had land.
man beef stroganof is absolutely delicious! also regular army mre are pretty good deal of food for money... not as tasty but well worth to have couple of cases home just in case
Hey Adam, I use the MH meals and heres why, they're light! Heres what I do, just before I go, I get quart ziplocs and take 1 top ramen/18 cents, add it to the meal and divide it into 3 or 4 servings. I do this with the stroganoff, spaghetti, chicken ala king, etc. cheap and adds bulk. m&m peanut doesnt melt, granola bars, tuna in foilpack, tortillas, peanut butter, instant coffee w/ cream and sugar in one plastic jar. Throw this in my Bear bag. Great tips from folks on the Pacific Crest Trail!
@themaddog444 I'm an avid hiker and im a huge fan of mountain house. i agree MRE's are good but if you're looking for something light weigh you really cant beat mountain house and the other freeze dried brands. The single meals come in around 4oz's and there very filling and good tasting just my 2 cents tho
I keep about 2-3 weeks worth of a variety of Mountain House meals, and plenty of water on hand for emergency purpose. In 2007 we were without power for 9 days due to an ice storm. I find the Mountain House meals very good.
It seems like all those FD camping food packs are WAY too low in calories, I need 4-5,000 calories a day while hiking, pounds of trail mix can makeup the difference.
I actually went looking for the coleman version today but was unable to find em. I do like the mountain house but I tend to eat both servings myself. Up next is a food dehydrator so i can experiment with making my own.
I've tried several of the 'new' Coleman meals and I thought they were subpar in both texture and taste. They aren't even close to Mountain House and are all vegetarian with TVP providing the protein I believe. I also noticed on the Coleman meals they only give two year shelf life where the shelf life of foil packed Mountain House is 5-7 years. I just ate over the weekend a MH meal that said "best before 2007" and it was fine, g/f even enjoyed it. For short term, I'll use #10 cans & repackage
I've tried and they are delicious, but sometime i just find it easier to carry a can of beans. Then i done have to worry about them being soggy or not cooked all the way, not to mention the price.
This is never a good real comparison of flavor though, Ive eaten peanut cucumber sandwiches on week long hiking trips and thought they were delicious. If you work hard enough on the trip, anything is the best food of your life :)
The Coleman Cheesy Tomato Pasta is not too bad.
