When I saw this about twenty years ago I thought this was a director worth checking out and have since see pretty much all of his major films---the good and the interesting failures. Deeply saddened by his death. There are very few directors worthy to be called visionaries-----certainly NONE today---but Ken Russell is amongst that rare breed who thought more of cinema than mere entertainment. Very sad.
I saw this film when it came out....I was a kid.....always wondered who the fuck else saw it.....not many people have heard of it............ahahhahahah
@martinharnevie- Actually i think your incorrect. Wakeman did do the lscore but Daltrey played all the live parts we see him perform. Those were live takes. Ken Russell had stated that many times.
@JimiLaMort Played as in acting. And this is from the soundtrack. The fact is that Roger Daltrey cannot play piano like that. It's all Wakeman's style of playing on the soundtrack.
@martinharnevie : I am not denying the OST is Wakeman. During the live performance 20 minuntes into the film is the specific scene i am talking about. Where Liszt/aDaltrey is making fun of Wagner's song. Liszt/Daltrey keeps riffing on a Wagner melody before cutting back to Chopsticks. That is not Wakeman, that is Daltry playing the piano live during that scene!
I have to see this movie! Tommy is one of my favorite movies of all time and this looks as trippy if not trippier than tommy, so i am definitely buying this haha
I looked this up on Amazon. Apparently, the DVD release of this title was withdrawn. I resent having a "good taste" police stopping me from enjoying LISZTOMANIA in may living room.
It's tells the story of Franz Liszt in a non-straightforward way. And why should it? The plain old biopic had been done to death by this point by everyone (including Russell). I personally am tired of the lack of creativity and originality in most films today, especially biopics. If I wanted a cut-and-dried, straightforward telling of a person's life, I'd READ their biography: it's a film, take advantage of what your chosen medium has to offer, for Christ's sake.
What's the quality of the DVD like? A bit hefty in price...so I'd like to know if it's worth buying or just well..who knows. Is it remastered? I know Ken gives a commentary.
Now The Music Lovers, there's a film I'd gladly dish out a day's wage on owning on DVD...
What a disgusting shit.

Fuck i love this movie and practically all of Ken Russell's musicals are masterpieces. One of the greatest living directors for certain.
When the fuck is Criterion or anybody gonna start releasing his masterpieces?

This was @jegspillerpiano, btw... seems a little confusing when I read it now, but I am most definitely pro-LISZTOMANIA.

@SeanPhillipMabrey Well, it's a little bit TOO 'non-straightforward'. Real talent can find a balance between imagination and convention.
