  • @davejoshmom1 dude if you decide to upgrade i would have to suggest a barebones kit. you money would go much further. than buying a rig off the shelf. besides that, the cpu, gpus, ram and hdds are much faster now. you'll be much happier. just wondering, how well does flash run on that?

    you have completely the wrong idea about quad cores..they are multiple cores on one dye, all sharing the same "onboard" memory controller (i3/i5/i7) (AMD AM3 chips), or in the case of the intel q series they are 2 dual cores strapped together on the same dye and not sharing the memory controller

    the point is that the only reason they share a dye is to save space, they are independant of each other

  • If a Dual-core processor runs at 2.8ghz and a game normally runs on it, does a Quad-core at 1.9ghz handle that game just as well or better?

    Yeah! Most don't even recommend quad core CPUs.... In fact, the only game that recommends an I7 (which is no different from an I5 apart from Hyperthreading) is Metro 2033.

  • i7 is a hypertreathed quadcore. With one processor as backup or control. The extreme just has higher frequenties, maybe some more cache.

    I bought one, when they where just released. went from a ati HD4700 to a HD5750. 6 gig of mem. Back in the day running Vista. It was a mayor performance boost for your vista experience. But Windows 7 Beta was to sweet. strangely enough after the beta performance went less. And the full retail has still bugs. And honestly OSX runs better on it. Windows is fail

  • @FRgod Because a quad can do the same job and faster. Plus you can multitask even more! I went from dual to quad core and what a big difference! Now I plan on going to OCTO core (8 cores) Intel I7 or maybe even a 12 core intel i 7! The more cores you have the faster and more multitasking can do! That means if you want to render a video in HD it will take less time for the video to finish! With my old dual core cpu a video took almost 2 hours to render now with my quad only 10 to 20 min! IN HD

  • @FRgod Just imagine what a 12 core cpu will do! It will render it in less than 5 min. But its very expensive!a 12 core I7 can cost $800 to $1000 and thats just the cpu! But 8 core its kind of cheap! You can get an 8 core I7 for like $288 right now! So its not that expensive because for that price the cpu is very fast! but for a 12 core its like $1000 and its extremely fast! In the future it will be standard to have more cores in most pcs!

  • @Edsan91 The i7 has 6 Cores 12 threads, I'll stick to my Quad core Q9550, the newer processors aren't much faster if I'm running at 3.5 GHZ, yeah thay have a lil more spunk but totally not worth the more money

  • errr no its a single core that can basically do two things at once. a duel core is approximately 30% faster than a single core with hyper threading with the same clock speed.

    2 smaller engines working together @60% = less heat than twice the size eng 100%

    Chris the way Software works each application can have as many cores as it wants. An application consists of two things. One or more logical threads and memory adresses. threads that share a namespace can share memory. Those threads read, execute and save to those memory adresses. The kernel schedules those threads in order to accomplish multitasking.

  • Quad Core = Better for Multitasking, multiple programs running on the same time

    DualCore = Better for games, cause games aren't developed to work on 4 cores or even on 2, yet the newest games from sept 2008 work with DualCore and are developed to work on 2 cores.

  • thats not right mate, i had a Intel Pentium D (DUAL CORE!!!) 3Ghz 4mb chache, didn't even run CSS smoothley..(8800GTX GPU) and now i have a Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, which runs all my games totaly smoothley, so Quad cores are good for both Multitasking and gaming mate.. :) - daniel :P

  • Pen D is VERY different from the Core 2 Duo's. MUCH different architecture.

  • Naw, crysis doesn't. It uses them, but not to 100%

    Every benchmark everyone has done on quad cores and crysis results in only 50% total usage in very very dense combat or lively action, or they fake 100% usage. So far only benchmarking software (not games) and rendering applications such as Vue 7 xStream (or any version) can fully utilize 100% of a quad core's processing power.

  • Crysis does use all four cores because it is programmed in 4 or more threads. If it didn't use all four cores it would be programmed in 3 or fewer threads leaving one or more of the cores completely unused for that application.

  • why don't you buy crysis, benchmark it in every single scenario the game has to throw at you, and comment back on how wrong you were

    sorry for being all mean, actually.. lol but if you launch crysis and task manager, you'll see the % used NEVER goes over 50%, and that's 2 cores. Most of the time it never REALLY needs more than 2 cores LUCKILY, but when it does, I wish it would use them. Trust me, I've been studying crysis's use of cores for a long time, and it only uses 2.

    If by crysis using 4 threads you mean it uses all 4 cores but never to 100%, that's not exactly right either, sadly crysis's threads are always executed on the first two cores and spread to the last two. You get to see a lot of little mountains in the performance column in task manager. Whenever cores 1 and 3 are at 75-85%, cores 0 and 2 are at 15-25%, always equalling 50% total of all 4 cores :(

  • clocked @ 3.5ghz. 19550 score.They come stock 3.2 but I don't have the cooling to push it further. It holds the record still I think for highest benchmarking in 3dmark06

    Last time I checked the latest offerings from Intel, each core has their own architectural state, interrupt controllers, execution units... They sound like processors to me.

  • NerdInHisShoe, you are correct. A Quad-Core CPU consists of four "Cores" each of which is basically it's own cpu or (processor) capable of running x86 based instructions on its own without the assistance of any other 'cores'. The QXXXX series processors consist of two 'dies' each (essentially) being an E6600 processor consisting of two separate processors, all in a single unit. So yes, cores are processors. His misconception seems to be based on the cores being in a single unit/package.

  • And it seems that he is drawing the conclusion that each 'core' is no longer a complete processor due to the fact that it operates in a single socket with other cores as singal unit. As opposed to there being 4 separate sockets on your motherboard in order to be considered 4 actual processors? Either way, each individual core can be considered to be a processor as it is able to (on its own, even with the other cores disabled) perform tasks to the x86 specification.

  • A 4Ghz (8Ghz combined) dual core will run an app optimized for dual cores far faster than a quad core at 2.4Ghz, but if the app can scale to 4 or more cores, the quad will without a doubt outperform the dual (almost 10Ghz of computing power, not counting bottlenecks from system buses, FSB, etc etc).

    A dual core can also be less taxing on the energy bill (:D), but nowadays Intel's new 45nm quads use only a bit more power as their previous generation of C2Ds.

  • I'm not a gamer, but I've noticed a huge difference with my newish Q6700 quad system. For one thing, I can run a malware scan, defrag another hard drive, watch a DVD and surf the internet with no appreciable lag.

  • This is the misconception that I've heard, the Quad-Core is Four Times more powerful than a Dual-Core, thats not necessarily true. The differences is minimal unless your running 25+ different programs at the same time.

  • Sorry I wasn't really nit picking anything, I was just trying to make sure that some users didn't think that in their PC was two CPUs or four. I know some systems do have dual sockets but they aren't as practical as dual core CPUs. If 2 cores are two processors then when you say a "Dual Core CPU" you can still say "Dual CPU CPU?"

Windows sees dual and quad cores in a CPU as if it were a system containing dual or quad processors since theoretically the one CPU is acting as 2 or 4 CPUs.

  • Umm yes there is. The faster clock speed you run the more heat you generate. Electricity is never lost. It is always used for something. Not always what you want. Like a light bulb... you use convert electric energy to light energy. Is all the elctric energy used to create thelight energy used to make the light? No, because some of the energy is converted to heat energy. Don't beleive me? Turn on a light bulb for an hour then touch it with the back of your hand. Same idea with a processor.

  • The more cores your have the more heat is generated each core has about 400 million transistors which means each core generates that much heat, so multi core cpus generate MORE heat per core than multiple CPUS, its simple logic More area (multiple CPUS) are more efficient heat dissipation devices than multi core (4 cores and !     And Electricity IS LOST its called "Thermal Electric Leakage") ALL electric devices "leak" Electricity, it causes shioter shelf life because it causes "sweating"

  • Yes but you can only put so many sockets on a motherboard. For one, we like to save space, not create it. Two, if we had single core CPUs on a dual socket motherboard you would use more energy and create less work in slower time then if you had a single dual-core CPU

  • Right now the whole dual socket or quad socket idea is kind of gimp. You need a larger power supply, larger motherboard (unless you remove other fetures to make room for the 2nd or 4th socket), and the memory latency limits the communication between the two or more CPUs.

  • You must still be in the stone age. You're telling me a 55 watt quad-core CPU uses more energy than four 38 watt CPU's of the same speed? Also don't forget that multi-socket motherboard will require more power to operate, more chipsets and so on. Plus CPU to CPU communication, even going beyond the FSB and sding direct connect technology, is going to be slower than a true quad-core communication on the die. Welcome to the new age.

  • Dosent change a thing... no sorry i does if you put 2 cores it actualy goes faster than 2 CPU becose cores are closer aslo you CAN still have more than One CPU on the motherboard on Socket775 & yes you need to be clear but quad core never means more than one CPU ... its the name of that particular Intel CPU ... a CPU is a CPU a quad core or dual core simply means you got more than one core... thats it ... not more than one cpu (witch designate the "cassing" where the cores resides)

  • Glad you agree with me. Yes there are dual socket motherboards, but when you refer to a dual/quad core CPU they are multiple cores in one CPU. Therefore everyone refers to any CPU, single/dual/quad, as a CPU.

Like Sli, two lower end graphics cards can be "strapped" together to equal the power of a faster one.   • umm does this guy know what he is talking about, the core of the proc is still another processor man, look at the arch white page, each core is a processor core it just saves the space and it becomes quicker than a SMP setup because you dont need a bus for each processor.

  • You are right and he is right. Depends the setup. On my Mac Pro i can do SMP with ease. I love my Mac Pro. Now i have 8 Cores in mine. It was $16,000 though but i had to upgrade as i go. But i get the use of All 8 plus SMP meaning i can multi process 1 thing on 2 Processors.

  • Yes it is technically another processor but everyone refers to a single core, dual core, and quad core CPU as a CPU. If you pick up a quad core CPU it has 1 socket. This is different then having a dual socket mobo.

  • Yeah AMD is developing multi socket motherboards. But a lot of what I read says that is is slower and requires a much larger power supply then a single quad core CPU because of memory latency. Dual socket motherboards arn't really practical yet.
