Who cares? Whilst I could cite players who now match or exceed his technique (Jorge Strunz), only two things matter: that he's a unique musician and, as far as alternate picking goes, the guy who inspired all the current virtuosos.
Of course, you could just listen to the music and enjoy it.
(P.S.: I believe Al nabbed "Rhapsody of Fire" as a song title long before Tom Hess's band had the idea).

When someone shows me Hendrix playing on acoustic then I'll judge him against Al DiMeola. DiMeola is a master of both electric and acoustic and doesn't use distortion all the time.
