This movie reminds me of Vietnam: we rode in to save the peasant farmers from the invading bad guys. Only we didn't have the good music these guys had.

@sns21274 I dont think name they picked for him in THE UGLY wasn't meant that he's ugly looking, I think it meant as in the moment ugly = bad situation cause he always brought them, but then again, it wasn't actually him whose THE UGLY in the movie it was actually the guy labeled as THE BAD since it's a mistranslation. If you think about it, it makes more sense that he's THE BAD, and the other one THE UGLY.
@CravenMorehead3000 No, gross. But who would be decent? Daniel Craig . . . Ed Hall . . . Javier Bardem . . . maybe Russell Crowe if he took off some belly . . .
awesome movie.. a romanic time of westerns and great actors.. original akira kurosawas version seven samurai was amazing for 1956 and shouldn't be missed. toshiro mifune should have been in the american version...these days its all pretty faces and political correctness.. i'd also like to see a remake of the japanese movie "Ran"..
@CravenMorehead3000 the thing is... most people don't know that this version itself is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Of course, is not the same theme... but it is the same plot.
@durbinmedia You don't replace Bronson, Coburn, Brynner, Eli Wallach and especially Steve McQueen. Nobody today even comes close to these iconic actors.
I guess, just because the film didn't really fit the definition of "spaghetti." A post-modern remake would just feel useless- but don't condescend the talent that's present in the film industry today.
The Coen Brothers, Christopher Nolan, Aronofsky, Fincher, even Nick Cave has at least written a few films (if you like westerns, you should check out The Proposition)
(I do agree though- most remakes are useless. Unless they're re-adaptations of existing source material.)
@CravenMorehead3000 lol, i'm sure if the Coen Brothers did it, it wouldn't have a terrible cast, lol. But I prefer them not remaking movies, sooooo. Also, if anyone says True Grit is a remake, no. It's an adaptation of the novel.
I still like Seven Samurai better, and for a western Once upon a time in the west is still my favorite after Django, but I would recommend this movie.
@yogiman03 I could almost trust a remake in Eastwood's hands (and certainly would have right after Unforgiven was released). But sadly I can't think of seven actors worth casting in it today.
@nightswimmer99 The "Return of the Magnificent Seven" might have been the worst follow up movie ever.. PLEASE, lets not even think about yet another one.. The original is the Classic western, it cant be replicated
@nomadthebiker I agree. Some things ought to just be left alone. I have yet to see the Seven Samurai though; I'm sure that will be a treat and that's enough for me.

I really can't stand Chico in this film. Sorry, but it had to be said. Whoever had the bright idea to hand half of Kikuchiyo's lines to that kid was nuts. And the drunk scene? Not funny at all, not emotive, just pathetic. On the flip side, I love Eli Wallach! Seriously the nicest gang leader ever. "Here's some horses, water, food, whatever. Take what you want! We'll even give you your guns back! Why not knock up a few ladies on your way out the door? You don't even have to promise you'll call!"

1 question... does anyone have any idea what Vin and Chris are talking about in their opening scene, right after the guy in the window shoots at them?
Vin's reply was just stating that it was close....he got nominated.
I have 2 kids a son "Chris" and a daughter Brittany..."Brit". We were gonna have 7 kids and name them after this movie...but I was concerned about Chico...so we stopped at 2 kids.
I'm italian and I saw this movie several time 'cause I think is the best american western of all time. I wonder who from the 8 great actors who played the movie (I mean the 7 + Calvera) is still alive. It seems to me only Eli Wallace is left, even if he was the oldest of all, being born in 1915.
Was 11 years old ,went to show with buddies to see a horror film (Dr. Sardonicas sp?). The second feature was M7. We came out of the show saying "Man that was the best cowboy picture EVER!" Know what, I still think that way.
My dad watched Mr. Sardonicus when he was a kid and that guy scared the shit out of him. No wonder why! I recently watched the movie and the guy is creepy. Just google it... XD
This is the BEST Western movie ever. Sorry Clint. But there's no denying that this movie was inspired by Seven Samurai. I'm a bigger fan of Samurais, so i think that movie is better. But nonetheless, Magnificent Seven is...AWESOME.
Absolutely great, one of the best westerns ever made-I have seen it 100times-always something new to find in it.This film is one of milestones in western genre-the first 'Great Train Robbery'-silent,the second 'High Noon', the third 'The Magnificent Seven, and the last 'Once Upon the Time in the West'. I can watch all these films any time.
One of the best westerns and I agree what a shame it is they don't make many westerns now, nothing like in the past. The assasination of jesse james by the coward robert ford, and the remake of 3:10 to yuma are the only recent ones i can think of. Pity.
I agree, I like a good western. I thought Tombstone and Wyatt Earp were both very good, and that one that's just been made with Viggo Mortensen in looks worth watching
What's interesting is that Kurosawa did the & Samurai under the influence of Hollywood Westerns, particularly those of Ford and Hawks: and then we come back and use him as inspiration--wonderful example of the benefits of cultural cross-pollination.
Yes very true. Talking about influences, I was watching a film just the other night: 'Once Upon A Time In America' - in its look and feel clearly influenced by 'The Godfather', which was about Italian gangsters, but 'Once...' was made by an Italian, but about non-Italian gangsters!
McQueen and Wallech were in McQueen's last movie. Steve was a bounty hunter and Eli was A Bail Bonds man. The movie was "The Hunter" a movie based on the life of Ralph "Papa" Thornson.
Yes, El Guappo
Oops. Wrong movie. :). I'm gonna look for it today on Netflix. Yul Brynner made me shave my head. Ha.

Just ask Steven Soderbergh to do it with his Ocean's crew; something like:
Chico - Matt Damon (Young guy)
Chris - George Clooney (Leader)
Vin - Brad Pitt (Second in command)
Harry Luck - Eddie Izzard (after the money)
Bernardo O'Reilly - Scott Caan (chop wood guy)
Britt - Casey Affleck (switch blade guy)
Lee - Andy García (guy who lost his nerve)

The lead in scenes where they were burying the guy. Outstanding !
Another movie loved -- The Wild Bunch. Same deal -- GREAT ACTORS in that movie. Somehow the wimps of today just don't measure up.

Was 11 years old ,went to show with buddies to see a horror film (Dr. Sardonicas sp?). The second feature was M7. We came out of the show saying "Man that was the best cowboy picture EVER!" Know what, I still think that way.

Was it Mr. Sardonicus (1961)?
888MCR888 3 years ago
Yep, a guy with his lips missing. Did ya see it too ? That movie sucked, but M7 was well - magnificent !
Cost $.25 then to go to the show to see a double feature. Those were the days.

I hope Akira Kurosawa at least made it into the "Special Thanks" section.
EmeraldDragon0 3 years ago
Amen to that. 'Seven Samurai' a magnificent film.
bayster912 3 years ago
What's interesting is that Kurosawa did the & Samurai under the influence of Hollywood Westerns, particularly those of Ford and Hawks: and then we come back and use him as inspiration--wonderful example of the benefits of cultural cross-pollination.
dennykdoe 3 years ago
Yes very true. Talking about influences, I was watching a film just the other night: 'Once Upon A Time In America' - in its look and feel clearly influenced by 'The Godfather', which was about Italian gangsters, but 'Once...' was made by an Italian, but about non-Italian gangsters!

Can you name the film that Steve McQueen and Eli Wallach also starred in and turned out to be McQueen's final film?
pr9151 4 years ago
"I don't think you solved my problem." - Eli is a class act.
macsters451 4 years ago 4
McQueen and Wallech were in McQueen's last movie. Steve was a bounty hunter and Eli was A Bail Bonds man. The movie was "The Hunter" a movie based on the life of Ralph "Papa" Thornson.
pr9151 3 years ago
why of course mcqueen was in mcqueens last movie, that doesnt need to be said lol.
