He called martin Luther King a "communist" in the 70s, yet now says he was REALLY just addressing "Why do we got to make a holiday of the guy? Oh, But he was a Hero."

Ron Paul has a fantasy in thinking the majority of Defense funds are being spent overseas.
They aren't, for all our bases (many of them temporary), over 2/3 of our troops at any time serve in the United States, NOT overseas.
If he was hoping he could get the money from that to offset healthcare costs, he's going to be surprised as to just how LITTLE that is.
He has not supported 2nd Ammendment rights at the Federal level, and his foreign policy plans are despicable.

It's because he's not tied to the bribes and secret deals. Because we manage to BALANCE our budget during the cold war, where military costs ran up over 30% of our GDP, supporting just 10% of our population, to include those who served and their dependents.
Today? Less than 1% are serving, and our Defense budget TODAY, is nothing like it was during the Cold War. It's like comparing the NASA of today to the age of the Apollo program.

Later, as there are much more technologies and every device that people dont really need, and you have interests on debts to pay off and aging pops, Social welfare, more illness via our modern way of life etc....this is why its hard to compare period spending and say it can be more easily afforded today.

@Alaskaslim The Federal Reserve system started in 1913 not 1945. If you have INFINITE money then your budget is always balanced. The real loser is the worker. By devaluing the currency the value of labor is decreased. Therefore, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I'm not so naive to think that the corruption can be stopped. I'm just not blind to it, and I there's no reason for me to defend corrupt politicians and a corrupt monetary system. The war profiteering is part of that system.

I can agree to that, current monetary policy is what encouraged us to accumulate so much debt, which largely started under Nixon. Before that? Our debt was negligible, some years nonexistent.
Our books were balanced, yes, in the TRUE meaning of word, despite having more troops, and FAR more abroad bases then we have now.
If Paul wants to stand against Wars and overseas bases on PRINCIPLE, fine, but the cost is not the issue he makes it to be. It's a footnote in our budget.
