This is a fantastic video - I made this sling in less than 30 minutes after literally spending hours trying to sort out someone else's written directions online! Thanks so much for posting this! I can't wait to make another one!!
Thank you for the visual! I've seen the written instructions and thought to try making this type of sling but felt a little intimidated since I do not sew very much but this tutorial makes it seem quite easy. Thanks again! Now I must check my fabric stash.
This is a great, thorough video. One suggestion though, pinning your lining to your outer fabric before you sew a single stitch will prevent it from stretching out while sewing. It's a bit time consuming but it makes for a more accurate final product. :)
Hello! Does it matter if both the inner and outer fabrics are slinky? All I have at home is kind of a drapey fabric for the outside and satin lining fabric for the inside (had to give up my stash when we moved). Is this going to affect the baby's safety? I hope to get better fabrics within the week but I need the pouch now.
@trishpulley That fabric should work okay, as long as it doesn't irritate your baby. The only real problem with fabric is if you have stretch in it. Stretch is good for a pouch, you just have to be certain that you cut the fabric so it stretches from the top to the bottom of the sling when worn. You don't want your stretch along the length of the sling; then baby will stretch it out when placed inside and it won't be a snug fit. Good luck!

@luvmyupsman Oh that is very helpful! I actually was thinking about sewing it up tonight, so I will be sure to cut it that way. I will let you know how that goes! Thanks for being so kind as to show others how to make these.
i was looking for written instructions for my friend since she doesn't have access to the internet, all the instructions i find are nothing compared to the video, they're really confusing, my mother in-law who has a sewing degree couldn't even figure them out. do you by chance has written ones?
@prncesbunn I don't have written instructions of my own on hand. I tried posting a link here for you, but YouTube doesn't seem too happy about that. Try searching "make your own baby stuff dot com". I would suggest trying there first. If that doesn't satisfy you, e-mail me at leah payne at hotmail dot com and I can work on some written instructions for you. HTH!
Great tutorial! Only thing I would add is some top-stitching around the top and bottom seams (rails)-- makes it easier to keep it folded and it looks sleek (esp with contrasting thread color). :-D Thank you for making and posting this video! :-D
Could you do a video on how to position your baby inside the pouch sling? I made mine last night and it seems like he's uncomfortable in there. Without even realizing it, I chose the same silk brocade. It's absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you very much. I found a visual tutorial for this online but I wasn't sure how to do it until I saw your very helpful video. I just whipped one up for a gift. Thank you so much.
This is great. My baby isn't due for few more months, but I can' wait to make this sling. For the 40 bucks you would spent on 1 store-bought sling, you can make several in different colors and designs. Thanks!
Thanks heaps, I first learned how to make cloth nappies here on youtube and now I am going to make this sling, I went and bought all the material yesterday and watched this video again to make sure I am doing it right, thank you very much, very informative.
Sorry for the confusion - this video was originally made to be embedded in my sling-making blog. I put the fabric info in the "more info" section to the right. It says:
FYI - The beginning piece of fabric used here is 2 yards long and approx. 48" wide - this will make TWO pouch slings.
Thank you so much. I just tried to make one with written instructions and totally screwed up. I am now cutting it down for my daughter and her dollies. I'm making a 2nd one and am so thankful I found your video because at least this time I'll get it right.
i have just finished cutting my fabric and I am breaking out in a sweat. I am using Flanelette as a lining and a cotton with a bit of stretch as my outside fabric. This fabric is too hard to cut when it is folded together. Can you recommend any other fabrics that might be easier to work with?
Thanks...I'll try doing that next time. Now I have to go to my mother in laws to use her machine. I have all my fingers crossed that this turns out ok.
The fabric is 48" before cutting it in half...meaning that one pouch is 24" unfolded, or 12" when it is folded in and ready to wear. Sorry for the confusion - I hope this clears things up.
I managed to do 2 pieces from your instruction from your video.... One with double sided/layers and one just one layer. The video gives a clear instruction. Thank you so much for sharing....

Wouldn't it be easier to sewn the pieces together before you fold and cut the "half-moon".

if the fabric are different types would you wash them first, before making it?

yes, I always wash my fabrics first in case any of them shrink.

I wouldn't give up on the fabric you have. Unfold it to a manageable number of layers to cut and then just trace each layer as you cut.
